as an anti, my job isn’t to tell people what they can and cannot consume in fics, art, etc. i cannot tell someone to stop shipping something, only explain why it’s wrong and problematic. i can’t tell people not to cope ship, only explain how it’s been proven to only harm. i can’t tell someone not to ship someone with their abuser, only tell them why that’s wrong.
fiction has been proven to effect reality. we clamor for representation then turn around and say it doesn’t effect anything. we cry when our favorite characters die, then say it doesn’t effect anything. as an anti, it’s my job to help people understand that.
not to send them hate, or threats - though most antis don’t do that.
we’re told this is a toxic movement, that we do more harm than good, that being an anti makes us as bad as pedophiles or nazis. that us asking for people to not ship siblings, or victims with their abusers, or a minor and an adult, is just as bad as people who do much worse. that us asking for people to not fetishize mlm, or wlw, or trans people, or parental relationships, or mental illness, or abuse, makes us terrible people. that crying out for people to stop shipping and glorifying disgusting things makes us worse than the people who do ship and glorify.
apparently, there is something wrong with having morals, with asking for healthy relationships to be glorified instead of unhealthy ones. apparently, fandoms “suffer from gentrification” - a gross misuse of the word, and even i know that.
the people - often minors - who just want to be able to go into tags safely, to not worry about seeing harley shipped with the joker, or ginny weasley with her brother, or jessica jones with kilgrave. who want to search for pictures of kittens without seeing nudes of someone who’s glorifying and fetishizing incest, abuse, and mental illness. and these people - minors! - are compared to hitler, to trump, to pedophiles. asked if their parents were pedophiles. many of whom are csa victims or abuse victims, people, victims, who don’t want to see what they went through sexualized.
and this makes them - us - villains for not lying down and ignoring when abuse and incest and pedophilia is normalized through fanart, fanfics, and etc. for not agreeing with the common mantra of “ship and let ship.”
we have a mantra of our own, and it’s becoming a battle cry - “don’t fetishize what we went through.”
