Magia Archive Vol 3: Asuka Tatsuki (New Year Dragon God)
Color-palooza! I love how festive and bright her design is. She was a total shock too, NOBODY expected Asuka to steal the slot for a New Year unit. More side character's deserve the spotlight! With such deep cultural elements, I got to do a lot of research for this one. (What's a Mikoshi? The Uchide no kozuchi? The Nebuta Matsuri? ...how the heck does one translate "Wasshoi" in this context??) Well, I've done my best, haha.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Momoko Togame
It is I, bad timing Momoko, who definitely did not forget to post anything for over a month because I got busy IRL, oops. Too many house guests, too much to get done before the snow hits. Though there is one thing about doing these pages for Ume characters, and its that translating Ume makes me want to bonk her on the noggin for letting her obvious proclivities seep into her designs. Why can we see Momoko's inner thighs? Purely because Ume thinks its Very Good to look at from behind. Like, ma'am you are too much sometimes.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Manaka Kurumi
So many little tiny letters on this one. Some of the type I added was legitimately 2pt font. Not that being able to read the letters helps, because the longer you stare at her MG costume, the less its construction makes sense. The JP notes are frustratingly vague and convoluted. All of us translators kept looking from the sketches to the words describing them like "What do you MEAN by that???" I want to sit Kuraha down and ask if the f4 staff who received these design documents were as bewildered as us.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Ria Ami
Who could forget the wonderful Pita Pit- I mean Mia Pastrami- I mean Princess Retiree. Wait a sec...uh...R...R-something... I'm sure it'll come to me. But enough with jokes, Ria is a character with a fabulous execution of theme. She's more Cinderella coded than Rena (and a better take on the concept in my opinion) right down to her glass slippers. Her outer layer is somehow a wonderful mix of a dress and a suit, which gives her the impression of being both the fairy tale princess and the gallant prince. If I had an MG costume, this is what I'd want to wear.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Konomi Haruna
Konomi! She's a character who suffers a bit from being featured in the first Archive volume, before she got her two special costumes and Doppel unlock. It makes her pages seem so bare compared to others. Remember all the "Konomi is Gertrude!" fan theories before her Witch was confirmed to be Heidesommer? It would've been super funny if the hypothetical Doppel design notes we never got to see hinted at an early dev connection between the two, just to rile folks up, haha!

Magia Archive Vol 1: Emiri Kisaki
Isn't she, like, the cutest?! C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, she totally is, isn't she?!!!! Forgive me, I've been listening to her homescreen quotes while working on this. Nohats provided most of the TLs here as a birthday present for me, yay! Again, thank you everyone for your well wishes! Emiri is like, totally me frfr in looks and personality, so it's fun to see how much people in the fandom associate us together. One of these days I'll put together a proper cosplay of her, and when that day comes, I'll be awfully thankful for all the design notes on these pages.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Masara Kagami
Masara is so pretty! A perfect glass princess. Or maybe an ice queen? Either way, she deserves a whole figure set in all of her costumes. And I'd hope her MG figurine kept her absurdly impractical heels. I wish we got an official height for them here. They're like, what...8 inches tall?! I'm sure there's a thematic reason for it. I bet someone could write a 10 page essay just breaking down all the symbolism in her MG form. And Masara deserves that kind of love from her fans!!

Magia Archive Vol 1: Ren Isuzu
Ren Ren Re-ren Ren Ren Re-ren Ren! Ren Ren Re-ren Ren Re-re-re-re-ren! I love Ren. She's my go-to when people ask "Who's your favorite character?" Due to being the focal character of the game's first event, I think she stole many a fan's heart. Her design is so exemplary of her themes of life and death too, with tons of well thought out details. I'm always excited to see her show up in the game, just beware of reading the Stardust Mirage event without a tissue box. Man, that was a rough story to translate.

Magia Archive Vol 3: Iroha & Kuroe
I was feeling a bit down from EoS-iversary last night so I thought, "Why not work on the pages for the last unit of the game and feel EXTRA sad?" and so I did. I always appreciate a duo unit that went the extra mile and used a true Doppel instead of a Magia 2. Doppels are cool! All characters should use them and all duos should fuse them! I miss Doppels. I miss all the characters. I miss Magia Record.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Shizuku Hozumi
A funny story about this set of pages, was that a certain baked good was (jokingly) asking when it was her turn to request a character, so I psyched her out by doing her ultimate fav ahead of time just so she COULDN'T have the honor of requesting it. Too bad! Now Muffin'll have to pick some other girl rather than this lonely dimension hopping cutie. Still, even with the design documents, I can't wrap my head around how Shizuku's outfit is structured. RIP any potential cosplayers.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Ayaka Mariko
What's goingon here?! This isn't Tsuruno, it's Ayaka! The girl who has a top class costume as long as you don't look too closely at her top. She's a real fun character, but I dread her story appearances because it means translating PUNS which is never simple. Fortunately, her Archive pages are pun free so they were a piece of cake! I didn't have to whisk making any mistakes and ending up in tiers.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Yachiyo Nanami
Once I had Iroha finished, I was curious if I could do the rest of Mikazuki Villa. One big snag I was hitting was my cheap scanner. It was a bare-bones office printer which could NOT handle vibrant colors. This resulted in all my pages having this green/grey zombie tint to them. Color balancing is not my strong suit, so Vivi would fix it the best she could. Once Mikazuki was done and I knew I wanted to do more, I upgraded to a lovely (expensive) Epson v600, which is just...magically better. Now Vivi can enjoy her retirement, and leave the Archive work to me, bst, and nohats.
For a magazine model, Yachiyo definitely gets some nice outfits. It's very amusing though that her Winter Costume is advertised as part of her set here when it was still being denied as a homescreen option in game. And also her design notes mention her Doppel is based on a scrapped PMMM original anime Witch??? Like, that's some important intel just casually written here!

Magia Archive Vol 1: Iroha Tamaki
I can't remember what exactly pushed me to give scanlating these pages a go. Maybe it was the desire to keep sharing Magia Record with the English audience after EoS. I had done smaller doujins and comics before, but this was definitely a whole new beast. I doubt I would have even finished Iroha without folks in the Magia Union Translations Discord like bigscarythings, noobwithnohats, Vivi, and Muffin to support me.
It's interesting to learn Iroha wasn't initially designed to be the main protagonist and her weapon was a dagger, not crossbow. (And with info from Archive 4, that her original color was BLUE!) It really makes me wish we were allowed to see more early phase concept art. I want to know the secrets!!!

Magia Archive Vol 3: Index
You thought the next post would be Iroha, but surprise! It's a whole 'nother book entirely! In order to get the best scans, I need to fully disassemble the art books. Since I also want nice pristine copies to display...this means I require spare Blood Sacrifice copies. I used to only have a blood sacrifice for Vol 1, but now I have sacrificial offerings for Vol 3 and Vol 4 too! So many more pages to choose from now.
As I'm sure you've noticed, the index is now in...English. A language quite dissimilar to Japanese. Because of this I had to make certain decisions about spelling. Though, with the whole "Partial EN menu on JP Exedra: Steam Ver" situation that came to light while I was making this, I got to take some neat semi-official translations from the devs. I will never ever call Rabi "Lavi" though.

Magia Archive Vol 1: Index
I suppose the best place to start is always the beginning. I must give my thanks to Muffin for slowly walking me through uploading things to Tumblr (I might be able to code custom events into MagiReco's engine, but social media makes my head spin).
Anyways! The index! A great place to sit in horror while looking at all the work that's still left to be done! Against my best efforts, I still managed to spell a girl's name wrong in my first draft (Sorry Aimi). It also made me question if I even knew how English worked with "Story Line" vs "Storyline."
Maybe one of these days I'll try to translate something in this book beyond Puella Magi.

I'm still fixing up some of the original pages I did (after Mikazuki Villa was completed, I bought a professional grade scanner which was SUCH an upgrade) so it might be a bit before I figure out the whole "how does Tumblr work" dealio, but when I do, this is where they'll be posted.
I'll probably also repost all the updated pages too, when I get around to it haha!
