Week five:

For this weeks activity, I chose to recreate this photo that I saw in class. Although I had two other photographs, this one seemed a bit easier to recreate and I overall found it interesting. The feeling that I got from the picture was a feeling of forgetting the world and whats behind you and just thinking about the now and focusing on just getting a quick feeling of relief. The recreation that I took was, of course, not as clear and precise as the photograph that I found in class but I felt as if it gave off the same feeling: a need for escape and just living for the now and focusing on the present.

WEEK 5:

Framing: the framing of the photograph is very straight on. Its close enough where the viewer can actually view textural features of the woman and also close enough to where you can even sense a type of emotion. I chose this photograph because when reading the caption and learning more about the photograph, I felt as if I could have related to the woman in the photograph.

Attributes+ Meaning: the attributes contribute to the meaning of the photograph because the zoomed in the photograph gives off a feeling of confidence and the fierceness of the woman in the photograph.

What is the photograph of: a woman looking straight at you

What is the photograph about: a fierce and strong woman who is fighting for her independence and rights. looking straight at her eyes and facial structure you can tell there is a strong sense of determination.

WEEK 5: A Century of Photography 1840-1940

Title: A century of photography-1840-1940

Name of photographer: “Group show”

Common Thread: The common thread that was evident throughout the whole exhibit was very powerful. There were various photos that exhibited a source for woman's rights. there were also multiple stories that you could conclude from the photos and the things that the subjects had to go through to eventually get to where they're at.

Photographers style: The photographer's style was very straightforward, he exhibited a lot of techniques that focused more on lines, shapes and lighting.

WEEK 2: Activity sheet

1. List ten things you see in the photo:

-Colorful, Vibrant, Woman stuffing her face, Makeup, Flash, Portrait, Dark/burnt contrast, Not levelled out, Photographer is standing up and photographing from above, carefree.

2. Where is your eye drawn?

-The junk food that is on the tables

Pattern/shapes/colors:

-Bright and vibrant colors in contrast to her legs. The lines that align with her legs and the table.

Look away and then look again--what caught your eye?

-The whip cream that is being squirted into her mouth. this is the first thing that catches my attention because I see a big mouth open with heavy lipstick in contrast to the woman's pale skin tone.

3. Light and shadow:

-The lighting is definitely toward the junk food that is on the table but the shadows and the things that are not so much centred are the people that are in the background.

Techniques/POV:

-The image exhibits a bit of an unprofessional, not staged feel of technique. If you look closely you can tell that the foot was cropped out or not even placed into the shot which is a bit distracting and it is also from the POV of the photographer who is capturing the woman's self-love toward herself and the food that she eats.

5. An adjective to describe photo: Bold.

Can you guess the genre this photograph represents?

-If I had to guess, I would say that the photograph was pulled out of a personal photo album. something where there is a funny story behind it and was not taken seriously.

6. How does the photo make you feel?

-Hungry

What does it make you think of?

-A party or maybe alcohol or drinking.

Why do you think the photographer made these choices?

-To foreshadow the young generation

7. Reaction to the exercise:

This gave me a chance to analyze the photograph to its fullest potential and think about why certain things were done and photographed and placed where they were.

8. What was difficult to answer:

The only question that was a bit difficult to answer was what kind of style of genre this photo displays. The photograph can honestly be seen in many different aspects, so it was a bit difficult to narrow down to one.

WEEK 10:

This is Annie. I asked to take a picture of her while she was studying. At first, she was a bit hesitant but then smiled and said, “you know what, why not!!” She was quiet interesting. She was an international student from Spain studying law. While studying she played loud hip jazz music to concentrate. When I asked her to take a picture of me she quickly responded, of course! I wasn’t sure if she was taking the picture yet but she caught me mid-twirl of my headphones. I asked her to take another one but opted out for this photo instead because it seemed a bit more mysterious and interesting.

WEEK 10: Thomas Russ: Photographers 1979-2017

Name of photographer: Thomas Ruff Common thread: the photographic series consisted of many different types of photographs but the common theme that they all had was that they were all thought out. Wheather it be the abstracts to the pixels, everything was specific and seemed as if this was the way he wanted it to be. Photographers style: the photographers style, to me, seemed very abstract. Although not all his photographs were abstract—they had meanings behind them that were quiet interesting. It seemed as if his main focus was telling and describing to the audience how photographs grow while technology and science does too.

Title of this series: negative Year: 2014-2015 Framing: the framing of the photograph is very straight on. It’s obvious that the photographer made her pose and stand in a certain way to capture what he wanted from her. The reason I chose this photo though was because of the kind and shapes this picture in particular makes. The shapes are so obvious that you have no choice to follow them with your eye. Attributes+meaning of photograph: the attributes contribute to the meaning of the photograph because the lines, shapes and just the negative itself is fierce. It’s forced upon your eye to look and actually stare. What is the photograph of: a woman who is wrapped in some type of religious wear or maybe something that you’d only wear on a special occasion. What is the photograph about: the photograph, to me, is about a woman who is proud and firce about her background or maybe simply about what she is wearing.

WEEK 10: In class activity: Africa

1. Travel: Trying to understand and connect with the people in the photographs, the buildings are in ruins and are noticeably left behind for a while. The relationship between the subject and the photographer are very significant because it marks an authoritative perspective.

2. Malnutrition: The viewpoint this time is definitely with the photographer although the eyes of the subjects are looking the opposite way. There is a lot of sympathy going on in the photo because of the children, observance of hunger and pain.

3. Ultimate malnutrition: The photos reinforce the size of the surroundings which make him appear even thinner. the subject is also alone, naked and bare. The photographer, this time, is low and close--which changes the dynamic of the photograph. The colors are also very dark and deep instead of vibrant and inviting.

4. Traveling from drought: subjects were moving livestock, trying to find civilization, travelling onward with their backs toward the camera which desensitises the image. The photograph is a general shot as opposed to being invasive like the other photographs.

WEEK 9:

What the photograph is of: the picture is of men in their nudes posing. Of: it might be of some type of gay projection or maybe a level of passion that they have for each other.

Captions: He put his hand on my neck and the first thing I thought was, his hand is clammy, cold and a bit sweaty. When will this be over… -I chose this caption because that’s the first thing that would come into my mind if I were to be sitting on the floor with other people—especially completely naked.

Passionate nudes. -I chose this caption for the photograph because if I were to see this caption under the photo it would give off a warm vibe and would make me understand the characters in the photograph a bit more.

WEEK 9:

Title of exhibition: “instant stories: wim wenders Polaroids”

What defines the photographers style: the photographers throughout the exhibition actually showed off a lot of the ways the photographer likes to take his photos. They were very precise and to the point because they were such small photos. What the pictures have in common: they’re all Polaroids. They’re also sectioned out to certain type of categories.

The photo that I chose for the assignment is the California dreaming series.

Compositional aspect: the composition of the photos was quiet unique, to me, as opposed to the rest of the photographers series. He was very particular in the way he photographed certain pictures.

Meaning if the photograph: I don’t believe that there is just one meaning behind this particular series. I believe that the title of the series and the photographs in general give off a warm feeling and express Californian vibes.

What is the photograph(s) of: the photographs in the series consisted of palm trees, people’s emotions, and certain type of architecture. About: I believe that the photographers in this series are about the things that you’d usually see in California. Happy people, happy atmosphere.

WEEK 8:

A. The composition is very straight forward—up close and personal. B. The use of light is clearly from the right side of the persons face. C. The mood of the photograph is very direct—smiles. D. The photograph is of a person who is smiling quiet wide. E. I do not believe that the photograph is anything really other than the face that it is happy.

WEEK 5: in-class activity

1. Shape: the shape of the image is slanted which draws your eyes straight from the mid of the body to the top. The position of the hands, as well, is another angle that makes a difference. Color: the colors in the photograph are slightly vibrant but also a bit warm. 2. The light in the photograph seems to be natural lighting. 3. The body structure of the subject is slanted and captured from mid section to the top of the head—which basically makes up the whole photograph. 4. The background is filled with a natural and nature look— grass, flowers. The subject himself is placed on the floor with his hands folded at mid body. 5. The mood of the photograph is a bit political and understandable which is created by the scarf—color of this scarf makes a huge difference in what the photo can actually mean.

Week 5: In class activity

1. Shape: the shape of her arms and how they’re folded represent a certain feeling. Angle of the image: eyes go straight up toward the upper body Color: the background is dark while her body remains to be the “semi light” of the photograph 2. The light shines from uptop onto her face. 3. Her body posture is straight up and up right/ she’s standing up straight while holding her head high up 4. She’s the center of the photograph while the background is dimmed out—making her the center of attention. 5. My perception of the photograph is “ah, look at me in my purist form.”
