Parade Sword
Dated: 19th century
Culture: Italian
Measurements: overall length 100.6 cm; blade length: 85.9 cm; width 17.5 cm
Inlaid in the Italian mannerism and perhaps inspired by drawings of Filippo Orsini Mantua (around 1554), the 19th century sword is a gilted parade sword. It has a straight double edge blade with a pair of long fullers. The recessed ricasso has a index ring finger. The blade is decorated on both sides with etched panels of foliage divided by a medial ridge running over the length of the blade.
The ricasso is etched on both sides with an architectural column contained within a strap-work cartouche (the Roman Colonna family) and the etched design retains traces of gilding. The iron hilt features a pair of vertically recurved quillons and a single hand guard. The molded globular pommel is decorated with a series of raised cartridges and further voluted ornaments.
