[Mutual Attraction] Snape x Reader
Summary: You try and build a friendship with Severus, he doesn’t know how to take this and accidentally says something he instantly regrets.
“Severus wait!” You shouted, trying to get his attention. He had taken off so fast after dinner that you had to slightly jog to catch up to him.
“Professor L/N why do you always insist on talking to me.”
“There you go being so formal again. Come on now, lighten up. I just like your company, it’s not some secret.” You replied.
You started teaching charms this year and for some odd reason that the other staff don’t understand, you had decided to befriend Severus Snape. A very strange decision on your end, but you did truly enjoy your time with him.
Of course he wasn’t sunshine and rainbows. On the off chance you two were in the teacher’s lounge alone however, you would make idle chit chat and it would often lead to more in-depth conversations.
Whether it was about potions, charms, DADA, or any other magical topic, you two could talk for hours if not interrupted by a teacher coming in or the time getting too late. You really did like hearing his thoughts and hearing him speak in general.
Every so often though, especially after a late night if you two talking in the teacher’s lounge while grading. He would distance himself for no particular reason at all. It didn’t make you feel too great, you had thought the two of you were getting closer and all of the sudden he was so cold. This period of time only lasted a couple days and you would ease back into a rhythm with him again.
Caught in your thoughts you hadn’t noticed that you had walked with him all the way back to his private chambers.
“Woah, looks like we’re already here. Well, hopefully I’ll see you at breakfast Severus! Have a goodnight!” You cheerfully said your goodbyes, only to receive a grunt and a mumbled goodnight.
Shortly returning to your own chambers, you flopped onto the bed and shoved your face into the pillow. Why were you trying so hard when it’s clear he wants nothing to do with you. No. You had seen the way his eyes lit up during those talks in the lounge. He had even laughed once! At a comment you made! God you couldn’t get over that laugh, so silky smooth. It was like hearing an angel sing.
Alright so maybe you had a bit of a crush on the potions professor. But is it a crime to just want to be friends. He would never want you romantically, but is a friendship too much to ask for?
You would see him again at breakfast. Maybe you could get him to stop giving you the cold shoulder again. The only thing you could do right now was take a quick shower and go to sleep.
It took you longer than usual to get ready this morning. The bed was comfier than usual and you really didn’t want to get up. Eventually you made your way to the great hall. Taking your seat at the high table, which was conveniently next to Severus, you noticed him giving you a strange look.
You turned your head to meet his gaze and smiled, “Good morning Sev, how are you?”
He narrowed his eyes and went to look at his breakfast instead, scoffing in response. Your smile dropped, but only for a second. Right. Maybe he wasn’t in the best of moods today.
After breakfast, though you would normally go with Severus to his first class of the day, you had a lot of prep work to do today. You enjoyed this time in the past. You would often ask him what his lesson plans were for the day and he would actually indulge you. Sometimes even going so far as to ask you what your classes were doing.
Which was why you were always confused when he randomly shut you out.
After breakfast you and Severus parted ways and you went to your first class of the day. Luckily you didn’t have a class for 2nd period, so you decided to take this opportunity to go to Severus. Maybe you could help him with some prep for class.
Your thoughts on that were paused when you noticed Dumbledore in the potion’s classroom talking to Severus while he was cleaning. How odd, you didn’t want to interrupt so you stood outside. A little out of sight, but next to the door so you could still hear.
“I’ve seen you and Professor L/N getting along well in the teacher’s lounge. I’m glad you’ve found a friend Severus.” Dumbledore mentioned.
There was a couple seconds of silence before Severus replied back, “Oh please. She’s nothing but a nuisance, always trying to talk to me. It’s embarrassing. I want nothing to do with her.”
“Now Severus, you should know by now, I know when you’re when you’re l-“
By this point you had stopped listening and walked away, too deafened by Severus’ comment to hear anything else. Fuck. God you were an idiot. To think you could befriend someone who actually wanted nothing to do with you? It would be best if you just stopped interacting with him. It would save you anymore embarrassment.
You went about your classes like normal, although you could tell some of your students knew something was off. Lunch had finally arrived and all you could feel was dread. You couldn’t tell if you were sad or angry. Sad at the fact that the man you had tried so hard to build a friendship with was so repulsed by you or angry that he didn’t just outright say so and instead let you follow him around like a lost puppy.
You took a couple deep breaths and composed yourself before entering the great hall and taking a seat.
“Evening L/N” Was what you heard from Severus. Now he wants to talk to you? The greeting wasn’t uncommon, but with the knowledge you now you decided to not reply.
Diverting your attention to professor McGonagall to the left, for the entirety of lunch you never once turned to Severus.
When lunch was over you swiftly left and went to your classroom. The day had passed in a blur. Your thoughts were elsewhere during class, yet miraculously you managed to get through the lessons. Now it was time for dinner.
When you sat down you realized you didn’t want to eat nor did you have the energy to. You excused yourself from the table and made an exit. What you didn’t hear was another pair of footsteps behind you. It wasn’t until you were halfway down the hallway that you noticed. And by that time the other person had grabbed your wrist.
You turned around to see the last person you would expect. When it seemed that he finally realized what he did, he let go of your wrist and gave an apologetic look.
“Can I help you professor Snape?” You ask.
You could see him crinkle his nose at the formality.
“L/N, ah- Y/N, did I…did I do something to upset you?”
He had the audacity..to even ask that?
“Oh no no. You’ve done nothing wrong Severus Snape. It was me, I apologize for being such a nuisance. I’m just trying to make sure I never bother you again your highness.” Your reply was dripping with sarcasm, but you were tired of embarrassing yourself trying to be nice.
Severus closed his eyes and let out a sigh, “Look-“
“No. Don’t worry about it. I’ll leave you alone. I won’t pester you any longer.” You turned around to leave, but before you could take a second step he had grabbed your wrist again.
You faced him again and was surprised to see a new look on his face. You couldn’t quite place the emotion. Hurt?
“Please…I’m sorry for my harsh words, but know that I didn’t mean any of it.”
You examined his face, looking for any traces that he was lying before asking, “Then why did you say it?”
Severus averted his eyes as he answered, “I was..scared, to put it simply. You were so kind and friendly I had never connected with someone so easily so the more we talked the more the fear built up. So I tried to distance you, but you just kept getting closer and I didn’t know what to do with my feelings. The one thing I do know is that, I want to see you smile again. I couldn’t bear it when you gave me the cold shoulder, and I apologize immensely for the times I treated you poorly.”
You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. So many thoughts were racing through your head. This idiot. He kept you at arms length because he was afraid? While you were glad he didn’t despise you, you were also saddened by the fact that he was so scared to get close to someone. You were about to say you forgave him when you remembered what he had said in the middle of the spiel.
A light blush dusted his cheeks as he realized what he had said. He cleared his throat before speaking again.
“Yes. I would be lying if I said that I said that I didn’t harbor some romantic feelings towards you. I know you don’t feel the same, and that’s alright. I only wish to not lose your friendshi-“
Before he could finish you leaned up and placed a soft kiss on his lips. In that moment it felt as though everything was right. His lips were softer than you could imagine, his hands snaked around your waist as you wrapped yours behind his neck.
The two of you eventually broke, resting your foreheads together, breathing in sync.
“I like you too Severus.”
