Animation created by our group in a limited amount of time
Planning
This post will be dedicated to the process of my group’s animation. We were given a storyboard sheet to plan out our animation:
Our original storyboard was lego people leaving and folding a beanie hat. I created a quickly sketched storyboard to plan out how it would turn out. We later scrapped this idea due to struggling to fold the beanie and keeping the beanie and legos in place. Our idea that we came with as a few lego figures running and driving away in a RV in a zombie apocalypse styled background.
In our group, we were given different roles with different jobs for the production of our animation. I was chosen as the art director, Sam was the model maker/ animator, Adam was the camera man and Tom was the producer.
We also wrote down a short description on what our animation is about, and what would happen in it. We also wrote down the process of picking jobs for each person in the group and what jobs they’d have to do. For example, the model maker was focused on created characters and objects for the animation.
As the art director, this was the background i designed. i only had around 40 minutes to create a background of decent quality, so I created a toxic looking abandoned, overgrown area. I used promarkers to colour in the image. The biggest problem I had to face with this background was the lack of experience with promarkers and the limited time I was working with.

Brief
Pixar
Pixar was founded in 3 February 1986 by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith. It is currently based in california, USA. Pixar is one of the most famous animation companies out there, rivalling Disney
Studio Ghibli
Studio Ghibi was founded in 15 June 1985, Tokyo, Japan by Hayao Miyazaki and co-founded by Isao Takahata, It is also currently based in Tokyo. Studio Ghibi is also known for animated movies such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howls Moving Castle ect.
(No face’s design) ^
Studio Ghibli is very well known throughout the anime industry. It has a very distinct style that people are able to recognise straight away. Ghibli has very iconic characters as well, such as No-face, Totoro and catbus ect. These characters are very recognisable because of their odd unique designs. For example, No-face is just made up of different simple shapes with one or two colours. Because of the simplistic design, the character sticks with the viewer instead that of a intricate design.

The history of animation
The early ways of showing motion
Archeological artifacts show how we’ve been attempting to depict motion since mankind have been able to draw. Below are some examples, such as the European Renaissance era.
This is a pottery vessel found in Shahr Sukhteh, Iran. This was created around 3,000 B.C. It features a goat leaping over a fence or plant. This is one of the first times that animation or motion has been seen in history.
This is Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man which was created around 1500 A.D. This drawing shows multiple angles, implying movement.

What Primary/Secondary research did I do?
For my main primary research, I examined the Farmegeddon website and researched all the different types of activities they have to offer. I also viewed multiple magazines and blog/ facebook pages about Farmageddon and peoples experiences and opinions on the event.
For my secondary research, I looked at multiple artists and their work to give me a sense of what style my outcomes should turn out like. I also looked at a sticker company to help me further develop my stickers and other POS.
How did my research help me to develop ideas/ form my final outcome?
My research helped me by giving me an idea on what I wanted my outcome to be like. For example, how my badges would look or how my poster would look. Without my research, it would have been much more difficult to start my designs as I have no idea on what I’d want them to turn out like. The research gave me insight.
What artists have I looked at and how did this influence my work?
I have looked at
What were my initial ideas and how did I develop those ideas?
My initial idea was to do creepy but cute gothic cats. I scratched most of this idea though due to farmageddon being more creepy and terrifying instead of creepy cute characters. Instead of just using these cats, I included more animals and mythical creatures such as wendigos and werewolves.
I used these mythical creatures and animals to create my stickers and badges. For my T-shirt and poster, I took inspiration from horror games. For the poster, I decided to do a Slender man design of one of his nine pages. I thought this would be quite effective because of how morbid and creepy it looks hanging on a wall tilted and worn. I later developed this idea by using tea bags to give the poster more age and appear worn.
For my t-shirt design, I decided to do something with the inspiration of Resident Evil. I started sketching a zombie hand with the reference of my friend’s hand. I later decided to do the linework white to make the shirt design more simple and less busy/ messy. I also included the farmageddon slogan ‘Only fear grows here’ under the design to make it stand out as a farmageddon piece of merchandise.
What materials and techniques did I use?
I decided to use multiple materials to create my outcomes. For my poster, I digitally created the text on the poster and used tea/ tea bags to stain the paper. Before I added the tea, I ripped and crumpled the paper so the tea seeps into the rips and creases.
For my badges, I used multimedia such as pro markers and illustrator. This is to compare the different outcomes and which one was more cleaner and professional. There is a huge difference to using illustrator and traditional art. Illustrator had a much cleaner finish while the pro markers were much more flexible to do.
My stickers and t-shirt design were created digitally on illustrator to give them a matte and clean finish unlike half of my badges. I used a graphic tablet to draw them in photoshop and edit/clean them up in illustrator

How/Why did I choose the techniques and materials for my final outcome?
-
Did I make any changes in my designs that altered my final outcome? Why?

Final outcomes
When designing the stickers I initially sketched them in my sketchbook and selected the ones that I thought would be most suitable for the client. I then colourised them keeping to a pastel theme do add a child like innocence to the designs despite their disturbing nature. after this I scanned in my work using a MFD Printer in the art department and made a photocopy, I also sent the scanned image to my work stations email address and carbon copied another student as to have a backup of my designs should any work be lost. I then put my designs into Adobe Illustrator and used the image trace feature to create a vector art version of my work however I was unhappy with the outcome so I opened the file in Photoshop and drew the stickers using a bamboo drawing tablet.
Once I had completed the outlines I created a colour pallet on my page and colourised the images by hand until I learned about the feature of filling a selection in Photoshop which sped up my progress, however the fill did not fill all the way to the lines so I went over the final pieces with the tablet to tidy the image. One of the limitations of this was the printers available to me as when I attempted to print my final outcomes the print server would not accept my request, I overcame this obstacle by emailing my designs to another student who was able to print my work for me using a colour MFD Printer.
When designing my T-shirt I decided to used the Adobe Program Photoshop to design a hand. The hand I designed was inspired by Boneface as he uses silhouetted hands on many of his designs. I made the decision to use a black t-shirt as this matched the house style of the clients event. as the attraction is centred around horror and therefore a dark shirt would exaggerate the dark elements which are connoted with the genre. After designing the hand I printed two copies of my design onto a shirt printing sheet. This proved beneficial as on of the outcomes did not come out as required as when I was ironing onto the t-shirt I had purchased the image stuck to the iron and therefore did not successfully transfer onto the material. After this I turned down the temperature on the iron and attempted to transfer my image again, this time with greater success. This process helped develop my understating of both printmaking and the importance of trial and error while not relying on a single outcome without a backup.
When i designed my badges, i have decided to test the quality of traditionally made or digitally made. The wolf, text and eyes badge was created with promarkers on a normal piece of paper while both the black badges were created digitally on photoshop and illustrator. I used different pen techniques and textures to create each badge while I used a wacom tablet to hand draw each design digitally.
In order to create the badge, we were given a badge maker. The badge was made up of four pieces, plastic covering, a piece of paper with the chosen design, the metal plating as the base of the badge and the back with the pin.
Brief
“You have been approached by Farmer Teds, near Southport, who has a suite of business activities including the nationally renowned Farmaggedon event, Halloweek, Farmer Christmas, The Reptile House, Animal Farm and school visits.”
The client has asked me to consider solutions as follows:
To come up with any media be it art, web, digital, audio or video to enable us to not necessarily re-brand but renew, refresh and reinforce our position within the market place. I have decided to choose Farmaggeddon for this project.
The outcomes expected from this project:
Mind Map Task
Research Task 1- Client research (endorsements selling points etc).
Research Task 2- P.O.S graphics and target audience.
Stickers Design Task- Use some of your imagery to produce stickers for promotional use.
P.O.S Design Task- Produce designs for P.O.S material.
Poster Design Task- Formulate ideas for your poster designs.
Sketchbook Annotation- Continued in-depth annotation of the project.
Final Evaluation Task
The unit we are focusing on for this project is Unit 3: Ideas and Concepts in Art & Design. The unit in mind must reflect in our research and outcomes.
Alton Towers Scarefest
This years Alton tower’s scarefest is open on 6th - 7th, 13th - 14th, 19th October - 2nd November 2018.
Unlike farmageddon, it focuses more on rides instead of houses you can go into. The park is separated from younger visitors and older visitors. Live shows are put on for the younger audience while there is a scare zone for older families. The scare zones consist of mazes and other forms of entertainment.
God machine
God machine is a welsh artist that focuses on detailed illustrations, posters, stickers ect. His work is heavily influenced by film, literature and music. He uses wacom and photoshop to create his pieces. His detailed work can often be seen on band merch, skateboards and clothing companies.
Some of his cilents include Tony Hawk, Adidas, Bullet for my valentine, Bring me the horizon, Disturbia ect.
I would describe his work as very monochrome sometimes hightlighted with colour. His style is very Gothic and extremely detailed in every piece.
Drew Millward
Millward is a musical artist from Bolton. He specializes in illustrations and posters with his favourite materials that are pens and pencils. He has exhibited throughout the US, UK, Europe and beyond, as well as having the pleasure of creating work for an ever growing international client base.
He has worked with Nike, Disturbia clothing, Warner music, Arctic monkeys ect
I would describe his art style to be very vintage and colourful. Only 3 or 4 colours are actually used in his pieces, creating a simplistic yet effective outcome.
stickers - https://www.paperchase.co.uk
I have decided to create stickers for one of my final outcomes. I researched a site that sold stickers by the name of paperchase to give me an idea on how they should be designed. Paperchase has over 20 different sticker designs with types like 3D stickers, colourful kids' stickers, metallic and holographic stickers.
This gave me an idea on what type of sticker I should make and what type of outcome I want.
