Goro as shut in hacker and Joker as Athete following the worse advice given in therapy

Their memories unlocked right after the creation of the Phantom thieves. Goro took the tec at his disposition to research and take notes of everything Ren tried to write everything he could remember on his journal. his first instinct was to look for the thieves but from first instance it was clear they didnt remember so once he saw Sumire he realized.

Also realized when he went back home that he has sports practice and a guilt and grief that feel both his and not his. Thing he knew how to do sometimes just slip hes biting back insecurity that wasnt there before, and if he looks to much in the mirror the reflection isnt his unknown twin but its joker bold smirk he cant seem to match this time around.

And Goro, goro researchs everything and when he is set to go and find joker himself he finds his hands and legs give in at every attempt at actually leaving his room, it knocks his air out, skin crawling. when he actually leaves the apartment everythings painfully loud and overwhelming, he can just contact him on the phone for now, Ren doesnt need to know Akechi thinks Ren doesn't need to know that he collapses from strain and overwhelm when he returns home from facing crowds.

Ren thinks Akechi doesn't need to know he keeps fucking everything he does, that he takes pills for depression to keep himself functional to a fault.

And even in this they both think its the closest thing they will to to meeting years earlier with untainted hands and fates so

Also Joker has braces, and Goro has freckles. And they both wear real glasses now. Goro is annoyed at finding the worse closet he has seen.

Another roleswap shuake interpretation of mine is I think their backstories would be pretty identical to canon, but it manifests in different ways in how they behave or feel.

Roleswap!Akechi would still be orphaned young because of his mother's suicide. He got used to isolation, and is still less likely to reach out to others. But instead of awakening to his persona and seeking out Shido, he just gets transferred and fostered in Tokyo. In my headcanons, he would be taken in by Muhen and live above the Jazz Jin instead of at Leblanc with Sojiro.

Meanwhile, roleswap!Joker still grew up in the countryside for most of his life. I headcanon that his confrontation with Shido takes place earlier, probably a year before it does in canon (when he's 15 instead of 16). Instead of having him arrested, Shido turns everyone in town against him and then blackmails Joker into working for him after he's abandoned. He gets forced into the metaverse, awakens his persona, then becomes the Black Mask as we know him.

Since swap!Joker experienced a normal childhood for longer, he'd probably have a harder time isolating. He'd be less awkward, have more emotional awareness, maybe even develop a 'friend' group in his school. But his experiences ruined his faith in friendship/ love, so none of it feels real or fulfilling. He also convinces himself he doesn't deserve it due to his crimes. He craves socialization but can't have it, and that eats him up inside.

It would be a great contrast to a swap!Akechi, who (because he still grew up an orphan) is overwhelmed by the sudden wave of care and friendship being showered on him by the Thieves, Muhen, and the rest of his confidants. Canon!Joker embraced his friends really quick, but I think swap!Akechi would be a slow burner, still in-denial about his relationships with others.

This would make roleswap!Joker feel jealous of Akechi for very different reasons than canon!Akechi did for his Joker. There's a subtle difference. Basically:

Canon!Akechi: envious of Joker for experiencing love and friendship that he has never known. Grieving something he never had.

Roleswap!Joker: envious of Akechi for experiencing love and friendship that he used to take for granted. Grieving something he lost and will never have again.

It would make roleswap shuake's connection very interesting because Akechi finally finds a relationship he instantly feels comfortable with (instead of his typical slow burn) but still feels the need to hold at arm's length. Meanwhile Joker (since he's more self-aware/ less in denial), would definitely know that he has feelings for his rival, and would be 100x more flirty than canon!Akechi because of it. Except he'd also be suffering because Akechi's ass would still be awkward like he is in canon and shoot down his advances while simultaneously flirting back. The king of mixed signals. Therefore the cafe scene is playing out exactly like it does in canon.

ok so in this au not Everything is swapped? I mean maybe some of the confidant’s stories and some of their personalities but everyone in the phantom thieves are still the same people!! Morgana included too idk how u swap him bruh

Akechi gets the criminal record and has to live with sae (and only finds about makoto later on) in the attic of like a dessert cafe! I imagine the nijima’s would have ties to akechi’s which is how akechi was in their care in the first place

So concequently ren, sojiro and futaba gets switched w them (prosecutor sojiro, student council president futaba even thoufh shes in her first year ? Or maybe shes just an honors studnet idk)

As for shuake themselves yeah their personalities are the same save for the backstories. I think shido is still the big bad but like . Kills ren’s whole family and got taken in by the sakuras. Akechi goes to jail for tje samw reasons that ren does in canon but i dont rly know how to tie the whole shido is his dad thing … yeah i ddint really thijk that far 😭😭😭

My opinion is that for roleswap AU, I don't think Akechi would wear glasses. The point of canon!Joker wearing fake glasses is that he wants to avoid scaring people, implying that his physical appearance is intense or intimidating.

But we know that canon!Akechi can already put on the babydoll doe eyes on command (even when he's not trying to, like in the engine room)

So my headcanon is that roleswap!Akechi wouldn't wear glasses but instead weaponize his natural cuteness to placate the people around him. Just imagine Akechi walking around Shujin with big shiny bambi eyes while the students gossip about how he secretly stabs people. But I think he would drop the fake cutesy look around Joker and assume his more somber thirdsem expression

Meanwhile roleswap!Joker would still use glasses to hide his intensity. I think he'd lean into appearing cool (rather than cute like canon!Akechi), but would probably struggle more to appear trustworthy due to his naturally-intimidating appearance.

It would add another layer to roleswap!Joker's resentment of Akechi. Joker puts sooo much effort in schooling his expression/ hiding his appearance just so people won't be afraid of him, meanwhile his rival is naturally blessed with sparkly Moe eyes. Joker would be so pissed

Something about how inherently embarrassing it is for a character to find out they've been delirious for an amount of time. Like, I just love how universal this trope is -- in almost every piece of media I've Consumed where a character is told outright or it's implied to them that they've been Very out of it and slipping in and out of consciousness for a while, the reaction is always oh god really?? The discomfort of knowing just How vulnerable they were.
