Even though Salute Your Morts is a more light-hearted episode, it does fit into the overall darker tone of season 9 surprisingly well. Back in Pickle Rick, even though Beth was a lot meaner to the kids (and her relationship with Rick was more dysfunctional), she explicitly acknowledged that Summer’s substance abuse was because of her home life - while Summer considered herself as ‘someone who just likes getting high’. Beth also expressed concern about the kids getting expelled and it seemed that this was the only reason she agreed to go to therapy in the first place, given her aversion to it. In Salute Your Morts, while she is upset about the kids getting expelled, the only action she takes about it is to summon and blame Rick. Once she passes control of the situation to him, she and Jerry just get high, hardly even remembering to feign concern about Summer’s drug stash - which is pretty significant for Beth since she always shows disapproval of Summer’s substance abuse, even if she does little to prevent it. This episode, it’s actually Summer who calls out the family for influencing her (and Morty’s) behaviour.

While the adults of the family are healthier in many ways, a lot of that comes at the expense of the kids. Beth and Jerry are still focused on their relationship above all else, and that’s made very clear in this episode. In Pickle Rick, they were in the middle of a divorce. In Salute Your Morts, they’re getting high and laughing together like teenagers, helping each other through panic attacks, calling each other nicknames, and professing their love for each other. However, they’re neglecting their kids because of it - very literally acting the way they did before the kids existed.

Deliberately took two of my sisters out to the clothes store and told them to go pick out yellow+blue outfits so I could secretly use them to draw Morties on top. The ONLY moment I have ever been glad my younger sister's taller than me ✊😔

unfortunately I can't show y'all the actual picture because my sisters are minors, but I used it as a lighting + color study most of all. I showed my parents the finished painting and they didn't realize it wasn't us, that's how fitting they were for the job. btw I did end up keeping those pants because thEY'RE SO FUNNY!! IT'S LIKE YOU'RE WEARING 2 PANTS- LIKE, THAT'S NOT A BELT THAT'S ANOTHER WAISTBAND. MY MOTHER HATES IT SO MUCH :D

my take de la banda de simus según estereotipos de músicos (?)

Ravena: cantante y guitarra eléctrica( ignorando el bajo de la foto aunque también podría ser). le dan la guitarra en las juntadas y el loco se sabe todos los clásicos del rock nacional de memoria, y algún tango, no para hasta el día siguiente. En el grupo es al que más se le ocurren cosas divertidas para hacer en las redes y es el que menos vergüenza tiene para promocionarse pero Medina lo ayuda con el orden, y lo frena cuando empieza con ideas polémicas.

Santos: bajo tipo Pedro Aznar. lo mandaban a clase de violín desde chiquito, y después al conservatorio, de ahi suma la guitarra y piano que toca a nivel intermedio o más, pero se arta de lo clásico y como quiere estar en la banda de rock se compra un bajo(son las mismas cuerdas que la guitarra pero dos menos y no hay que hacer acordes que tan difícil puede ser?) así que empieza con eso, después suma el meter bajos con un sinte y a veces otra guitarra. Quiere que la banda tome aesthetic más alternativa porteña para meterse a tocar el bandoneón. En el grupo es el que más propone canciones o cranea los arreglos y los conceptos de los shows y el álbum para que toda la propuesta sea interesante y tenga sentido, mete muchas referencias historicas. A veces sujiere arreglos y acordes muy complicados y el grupo lo tiene que frenar.

Lampome: batería. y también se maneja bien con la guitarra criolla. Pasa por una época de metalero donde toca con esa impronta pero en algún momento se empieza a entusiasmar con la percusión de géneros afrolatinos, asi que empieza a meter congas, bongoes, timbales, el chico del candombe etc eventualmente tiene que parar pero solo porque no le entra más en la camioneta ni el escenario. En el grupo es el que más se encarga del traslado, que estén todos los cables, y es el que más habla con el sonidista.

Medina: teclados y coros, y eventualmente se anima con el bajo cuando Santos quiere hacer otra cosa. El también está en un grupo de sikuris y quiere meter vientos andinos donde sea pero mucho no lo dejan. En el grupo es el que más se encarga de conseguir fechas, relaciones públicas, y finanzas aunque las desiciones importantes son siempre en grupo. A veces propone letras muy melosas o intros demasiado románticas en el teclado pero también es el que tira ideas de covers más interesantes.

Ravenna es claramente la imagen pública de la banda es al que le hacen edits en la WEEEEB con canciones de soda. Siempre está en el medio en las fotos.

Santos cada vez que da entrevistas se embola cuando no le preguntan de los arreglos. Tiene oído perfecto. Le molestan los instrumentos desafinados. Es capaz de explicar cómo armar cualquier acorde al aire.

Lamponne es incapaz de dar entrevistas sin usar puteadas o referenciar a betún. Le hacen un bingo onda “cosas que siempre dice”

Medina es el que siempre se explaya en las entrevistas y referencia orgullo y prejuicio cada vez que puede. tiene todo el fandom de luis miguel + Chayanne encima (o sea, todas cuarentonas) y él es FELIZ

I feel like people don’t give the Cornetto Trilogy enough credit for its female characters. They’re all very clearly written as women and even though, like the male characters, they’re written as certain stereotypes they still feel so real.

Even in Hot Fuzz when the majority of the cast is male you fucking remember realistically happily slutty Doris who has a harem of men at her beck and call. She could have been a male fantasy but she’s so aggressively in charge of her own sexuality you never hear male viewers sexualize her. It’s magical.

I didn’t even realize that Shaun of The Dead set the tone for me until I watched the movie again a few nights ago.

At 1:27 there’s a random scene where the only people helping Shaun are the female characters. They don’t make any real point of it but we get it. Liz and Dianne know Shaun is slightly stronger than them so they hand him the “spear” but they act as a team. Extra material on the DVD even revealed that Shaun, Liz and Dianne were the only characters who survived to the end (Dianne got away and hid in a tree apparently).

Women are in general far more capable and helpful in the movie and Shaun himself is the most “feminine coded” of the male characters. You’ll never see a male protagonist more honest about his emotions and more willing to be visibly vulnerable than Shaun I can tell you that much.

And in The World’s End we have Sam who has her own agency and doesn’t exist to be a price to be won by the main character Gary at the end of the movie, try as he might. She will help and save him and let him help and save her, yes, but the movie makes it very clear that doesn’t mean he has any right to her. She wants Steven and there’s nothing Gary can do about that.

The movies aren’t feminist masterpieces but together Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg writes some amazing female characters.

Side note; men also act a certain way around women in these movies that I can’t quite put my finger on. They don’t treat women as brilliant goddess or anything and can be downright inappropriate but there’s also a certain respect that feels unusual in movies? When Liz grabs Ed in Shaun of The Dead he doesn’t push her away or grab her back. He just sorta shakes her off without touching her in a “fuck off but I have zero interest in hurting you” way. I really don’t know how to explain it. There’s an understanding that “yes we are stronger than women so we can hurt them unintentionally but we know they’re our equals in both good and bad so there’s no reason to take advantage of that and women have had to learn to get the upper hand in other ways so strength doesn’t mean an automatic win anyway”. Just the way Shaun and Ed approach the girl in the garden before they know she’s a zombie. They’re afraid of her but not really and yet a little scared anyway. It’s…different.

But yeah, in these movies women get to be women because it doesn’t make them lesser, just like the men get to show their feminine side because it isn’t shameful.
