DARK SIDE OF THE EARTH, illuminated in its twilight by neon; pink, blue, sometimes green, and always sodium. The sun may have retreated beyond the horizon, but its heat still lingered in the tarmac, the bricks, in the hearts of the men and women who drowned their sorrows in the bottom of a glass and in each other along the endless New York strip.
Darkness was no enemy of the android, optics flared to see the glittering city that never slept far below him as if sunlight had never abandoned it, the headlights and taillights of cars marching in an endless procession like ants. Like robots.
The wind atop the tower block was unusually still, normally carrying the sound of such a procession up its facade and over the top like a roaring dragon, yet tonight it was nothing more than a distant murmur; tonight, it was sleeping.
Ethan was grateful for its absence, perched on the edge of the building with legs hanging over, peering down like a gargoyle as proximity sensors hummed their meek warning of something, or someone, approaching.
There was a voice. Familiar, yet distant.
