I feel like Grandpa Roma’s character mirrors Antonio’s in Besame Mucho quite a lot. They act as opposites. This becomes very apparent when Lovino asks Antonio if he would take him to a real mission. Antonio agrees, he trusts Lovino’s abilities. Grandpa Roma denies him partaking in any important missions, he takes every chance to show Lovino he doesnt think he can handle the situation. Another obvious scene is the one in which Lovino storms into the room to demand he also gets to help with the derailing supply lines mission. Antonio smiles (and would much likely approve) whereas Roma angrily denies him to participate. Lovino doesnt get the approval for self determination from his Grandpa, so he naturally turns to Antonio, who he knows will always give it to him. This is why George had Grandpa Roma feel guilty when he realised Antonio is in love with Lovino. He knows the way he treats Lovino isn’t adequate, yet he can’t help to continue the same way (his behaviour comes from losing his wife and daughter ofc) He might feel like Lovino turns to Antonio because he gives him what Grandpa Roma himself wasnt able to give him. Thats why he feels guilty, he thinks the dangerous situation he finds Lovi and Antonio in, is the direct result of his treatment towards his grandson.
