Alpha-1. The Lead Strike Team. Which meant an Administrator was in the room.
I became as tense as Noah was. If an Administrator was here, than this project just got a whole lot more serious. And interesting.
My eyes darted between each Operator, hoping to find a familiar name, when they landed on one: "SYKO". And when I looked up into the visor of his helmet, I found it staring right at me.

"SO THIS IS WHAT Weekend Mab looks like," Nicholas said as I lightly knocked snow off the soles of my shoes.
I raised my eyebrows at him. "N-not that it's a bad look for you, ir… y'know."
"Way to go Nick. Way to make our guest feel welcome," Nick said, elbowing Nicholas in the ribs.
I hadn't wanted to stay over at my team's townhouse; hadn't wanted to be under the same roof as Noah for more than twelve hours. But my time living in the Site came and went, and I wouldn't be able to move into my apartment until we got back from London. And I couldn't say no to Jolly, who so graciously offered their spare room for the night.
"Jesus Christ, did you pack your entire life into this?" Nick asked as he took my duffel bag without prompting.
"As a matter of fact, I did, yes," I said. Despite being in Cooper's Rock for a month, I'd barely increased my belongings. I had rarely left the Site, mostly declining Jolly's attempts to get me out to see the city. I reall didn't want to get too attached.
Nick took me upstairs to show me to the spare room, which looked like it had been abandoned to storage. "We cleaned it up as much as we could, but... Well, there's only so much other space," he said, scratching the back of his head as he placed my bag next to the air mattress.
"It's only for tonight. Thank you," I said.
In the morning we were leaving for the summit at Site-01, just on the outskirts of London. I had spent my first three years of as living in baseline reality at Site-01. First in containment, and then during my time at the UPA's university. I had seen barely a fraction of the place in those three years, as the Site was almost akin to a city all on its own. But where we were headed, it would be a whole new section.
Nick waved a hand. "Oh, please. It's the least we could do for a teammate, let alone the first girl we've ever had on the team."
I scoffed. "I've shared shower rooms out with men before," I said, heading out to the hallway. Where I almost ran into Noah.
A very sweaty, very shirtless Noah.
The man had almost no blank patch of skin left. Maybe a little one on his shoulder, a little bit on his sides. A wild riot of color. But what made my skin heat up was under that ink. He had broadened in the years I had last seen him, when he was thin and lanky. Now he had definition, and for some reason it made my body purr.
No, stop that.
"Fuck, dude. Put a shirt on. We have guests," Nick said from behind me. I blinked as my consciousness slammed back into my body.
"Seeming as it's also my home, I can decide to what I want to wear or not," Noah said. He looked down at me. "Is that bothering you?"
"Yes - No! It's fine, whatever," I said in a rush, quickly dodging around his large frame. Maybe being on the opposite side of the house would slow my heartbeat. Though I'm pretty sure the whole house could hear it right now.
It was just one night, and then the whole team would be on our way to London. Abnormal reactions aside, this shouldn't be as hard as I was making it.
THANKFULLY, THE TEAM DIDN'T go out to eat this time, opting for food to be delivered instead. There was a new sushi place that had recently opened up in the Market District, and Jolly and Noah had been dying to try it.
"The meeting with the big guy is gonna let out late," Nicholas said from the dining room.
"Wimp. He's probably at Taco Bell since he found out we're having Sushi," Nick said.
I stared at the food spread out on the table, twirling a curl between my fingers. I was at a loss at where to start, and I had another glaring problem.
Jolly, who had picked numerous rolls already, glanced down at my empty plate and hesitation. "If you're never had any before, you could start with the kappa maki. There's no fish in that," he said, pointing with his chopsticks.
I leaned towards him, ducking my face down. "How do you use chopsticks?" I whispered shamefully.
I thought everyone was too busy chatting with each other to notice my bumbling attempts with the offensive utensils and Jolly's patient teaching, but when I looked up after my first successful attempt that hadn't ended up splitting the roll in half, I saw Noah was watching me, lazily eating his own sushi effortlessly.
I felt a surge of anger at how perfect he was doing it, and the next thing I knew was a sharp pain. "Ah!" I dropped the chopsticks as they splintered apart. Purple sparks danced across my fingertips for a fleeting second.
"You okay?" Nicholas asked.
"'M fine," I muttered, casting my eyes down to focus on restructuring the wood back together.
When I looked back up later, I Saw their yes had widened. My focus dropped, and so did the chunks of wood. "Sorry," I muttered, picking up a fork and eating the sushi that way.
Noah was the first to recover. "How did you do that?" He asked.
My mind raced through several ways to best describe my abilities. "I just… ask. And nearly almost all the time, it answers," I said. "If I want 'apple,' I imagine an apple. I have to focus on other things if I want it to be as realistic as possible, like it's taste and whatnot."
"What if you've never seen an apple before?" Jolly asked, resting his chin on his knuckles.
I shrugged. "Then I can't recreate it. My powers depend on my imagination," I said.
"How good is your imagination?" Nick asked.
I glanced over at him. "Very good."
"So why can't you just… zap people out of existence?" Nick asked.
"Because of my geas chip," I said, tapping the back of my head. "It inhibits my abilities so I don't go crazy and rewrite all of reality."
"Do you really think you'd do something like that?" Jolly asked.
"No." The word automatically came out of my mouth.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Noah studying me, unnervingly. I turned to him. "What? You don't believe me?" I asked sharply.
Multiple emotions flashed across his face, too fast for me to read, but only a corner of his lips lifted. "I'd like to see you try, seeming as you can barely reach the kitchen shelves."
My face burned. Before I could send the wooden splinters of the chopsticks into his eyeballs, Jolly waved a hand between us. "Noah, pick on somebody your own size," he said.
The talk about my powers teetered out after that, with the conversation heading more towards what the weekend would bring. "Are you excited to be heading to Site- 01?" Jolly asked
I shook my head. "More nervous about the summit " I said. Site-01 was nestled in the outskirts of London, and was where I was sent when the UPA were unsure of what to do with me. It was where I went to university to study ontokinetics and such. Site-01 was practically its own city, and I nly saw a fraction of it.
"You don't have to worry about the summit. I'll probably be the one talking from our group," he said.
I hope he was right. Not a lot of people believed or trusted what I had to say.
"Hey, can I ask about that chip in your head?" Nick asked aloud, causing Nicholas to groan. "Hey, I just wanna know why the UPA would do something fucked up!"
"You really think this is messed up?" I asked, once again pointing to the back of my head. "This isn't even the extreme. The UPA loves putting chips into peoples' bodies. Hell, my best friend got a grant to put three in his forehead."
"You're exagerating," Nick countered, though the look on his face said he was afraid I wasn't.
I wasn't. "He created the Brain Machine Interface. Three little dots that go right above the temporal lobe." I tapped the side of my head.
"Why would anyone do that?" Nicholas asked.
"It creates an augmented reality overlay over everything, so he can see everything's details," I said.
"And the UPA was just… fine with it?" Nick asked.
I nodded, holding on to the tidbit where Dustin had said he hadn't trusted the UPA with that kind of technology, so he hid the information on how to truly get it to work. As far as the higher ups knew, it didn't work at all and would kill him if they tried to remove it.
"Who's your friend?" Noah asked.
"Dr. Dustin Bates, director of the Artificial Intelligence Department," I said. He had asked so neutrally, I didn't know if there was anything he was thinking. Did he think I was incapable of having friends?
But before I could ask what he meant by that question, the front door opened. In trudged Matt - with a bag of Taco Bell - who groaned loudly. "I hate Ash, if you can believe it," he said loudly.
"Damn, dude. I didn't think he'd keep you over that long," Nick said.
"Jolly, you owe me for making me deal with that asshole all by myself," Matt said, dragging a chair over to the end of the table and sitting down.
"Why'd he keep you so long?" I asked.
"It was just to tell me about the changes to the Site tomorrow. Now not everybody's going fly to London tomorrow."
"Really? They're gonna just send Noah and Jolly again?" Nick complained.
I tried not to show my relief. That meant I could have a few days in my new place to do what I wanted. And no Noah? I wasn't going to complain.
"Not Noah and Jolly." Matt shook his head. I somehow knew what he was going to say before he turned me. "Noah and Mab are going to Site-01."
THERE WAS NO WAY I was going to be able to sleep tonight.
I couldn't even focus on the book I was reading; that I had brought mainly for the flight. I was trying to read it to distract myself, but I found myself staring at the same page, even the same sentence, over and over.
Just me and Noah.
Just the two of us going to Site-01, where I had been forced to begin anew. Where I knew that not even for a moment Noah would let me out of his sight.
I tilted my head backwards, staring up at the ceiling. The little holo projector Dustin got me for my birthday last year was the only thing keeping the darkness at bay. Right now, it was making the ceiling look like a copy of the night sky in July, with Ophiochus looking down at me. I remembered that it was Dustin's favorite constellation.
"Of all constellations," I had bemoaned, "why that one?"
Dustin had smiled at me, one corner of his lips lifting. "That's classified."
There was a soft knock at the door. I placed my bookmark into the crease and was shutting the book when Jolly peeked in.
"Everything to your liking?" He asked.
I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, so I nodded. He then slipped inside and shut the door behind him.
He looked down at the projector i had placed on the floor, and then looked up. "A light show?"
I didn't want to tell him that it acted as a night light; that their all powerful reality bender was scared of the dark. "It helps me sleep," i explained.
He moved easily around the junk that had been haphazardly moved to make room for me. It hadn't registered to me earlier, but I now realized that I had never seen him outside of his Ambassador uniform. His hair was down, and I saw his hair was longer than Nicholas'. Maybe longer than my hair was before the UPA made me cut half of it off.
"Are you good for tomorrow?" He asked as he sat down on the end of the mattress.
My stomach twisted at his words. When Matt had exclaimed the news earlier, Nick loudly complained about how he never got to go on these trips. As if Noah and I were going on a vacation, not a summit meeting. As if I wouldn't give up an important organ to let him go in my stead.
"I'm fine," I lied.
Jolly must've sensed my lie, for he frowned and his hand inched forward towards me. An involuntary reflex shuddered through me and I jerked my foot away from his hand. To try and ignore the embarrassment that flooded through me after the move, I focused on his one earring, which caught the dim light as it gently swayed from his own movement.
"Why do you hate Noah?" he asked.
I pulled my knees towards my chest, casting my eyes back up to avoid his weirdly piercing stare. "Hate is such a strong word," was all I said.
"Why are you cold towards him, then?"
Stupid Ambassador ability to detect any kind of personal issues…
I couldn't tell him about the years spent all by myself, fumbling around in the dark. It sounded completely stupid in my head, so what prevented him from thinking it was stupid? So I just sat there in silence, avoiding his attempts to break me open.
"If there's a misunderstanding, I'm sure if you two would talk it out—"
"Jolly." Just saying his name made him fall silent.
After a few moments, Jolly patted the mattress as if he was patting my shoulder. "Don't let this change freak you out. Everything will be okay." He stood up, turning towards the door, but stopped. "Who knows? Maybe being alone with Noah will change your feelings towards him."
That's what I was afraid of, was all I could think as he slipped out into the hallway.
THE OTHERS COULD HAVE warned me about Noah's fear of airplanes.
The early morning start was already soured by the inability to get a good night's sleep. I probably tossed and turned the whole night, maybe only getting a total of three hours. I had given up when I heard someone downstairs going down stairs, and I slipped down to join them. And slipped was an appropriate way of describing it, because I gave Jolly a fright when he turned and saw me in the kitchen.
Noah had come down an hour later, looking like he had just rolled out of bed. "You ready?" He yawned, raking his fingers through his dark hair.
I was sitting in the living room, dressed and hair straightened to the professional point, with my bag at my feet. "Yeah," I said plainly.
The tram took us to the border of the Nexus, where when we passed through, another car drove us to the nearest airport that would fly us internationally. Because of course we couldn't go in a copter or one of those fancy UPA planes with beds and showers.
I should have read the cues that Noah was nervous about flying. He wouldn't sit still at all while we waited to board, and when he did sit, his leg bounced relentlessly. But my "oh" moment was when we were on the runway, and as we taxied he was gripping the seats armrest with white knuckles.
But at least it meant a flight without speaking to one another.
When we touched down on British soil, it was almost midnight. Noah didn't Let out a breath until people were standing up to pull out their carry-ons. He didn't stand up right away.
"You okay?" I asked, which might have been the only thing I said to him the whole flight.
He just waved me off, taking a deep breath before standing.
I suppose one good thing about being in the Universal Paranatural Alliance was passing through customs without the long wait, and having someone there to meet us before driving to Site-01. And thanks to the time of night, I didn't have to wear sunglasses.
When we were on our way, Noah seemed to relax more. "Still awake?" He asked, nudging my shoe with his boot.
"Yep," I replied, going through my tab. I had to leave ECHO behind, and not hearing their little chirps left a void. I needed to set up a system in the new place that would allow them to follow me from Site-06.
"Talking to your boyfriend?" he asked.
I looked up, squinting my eyes. "I don't have a boyfriend."
"I know. I just wanted to get a reaction from you."
My chest burned, but I was distracted by the car passing through a ward. It felt a lot like Nexus barrier, only dulled. Also the car could be driven in it.
Site-0l was as extravagant as ever. No one knew why they chose this place to be the first Site. Only the Founding Administrators would know, and that had been over a century ago. But in the century since, they certainly built it up. Almost every department had its own building, and it even had sectors dedicated to companies that was a part of the Alliance. Some even say that it rivaled London itself in size.
The driver took us to guest housing, or more specifically, whatever address that had been given to Noah. He didn't stay long after we got out of the car; just long enough to pull my bag and Noah's suitcase out of the trunk.
Noah held the front door of the hotel open. "After you," he said.
Where the front had made it seem like it was an ordinary place to stay, the front lobby was the opposite. The only way to describe it was to liken it to the Waldorf Astoria. It almost dripped wealth. I'd hate to think how much a few nights here would cost if it wasn't for the UPA. And of course, the colors were all in UPA navy and silver.
In the elevator, Noah yawned. "I don't know about you, but I'm beat," he said.
I bobbed my head. I was beat, despite taking a short nap a couple of times. And I was ready to part ways with him for the night. Being so close to him for so long made my stomach feel weird.
But as I was ready to throw the awful day of travelling behind me, the universe threw one last "fuck you" in my face. Noah lead us down the hallway to our room.
A room.
I knew the UPA had housing that was at least like a condo. This place should have rooms like that. But here we were: a leather sofa, big flatscreen, a small kitchenette, and two beds. No privacy from Noah.
"I'm gonna take a shower before I go bed," he said, tossing his suitcase on the bed closest to the door. "I gotta shower this day off of me."
Same here, I thought, but waved for him to continue on. When I could plainly hear the water running, I hurriedly changed into my pajamas. The silk shorts and shirt felt childish in the presence of my current company, but it was all I really had. Maybe I could go out and get some more modest ones if I had the time.
I was slipping under the covers - which felt like heaven after sleeping in bunks and Site housing - as Noah finished his shower. I was purposely turned away from him.
"You don't want to take a shower?" I heard his voice.
"No, I'll take one in the morning," I said over my shoulder. The thought of taking a shower with him so close made my skin break out in goosebumps.
I heard a grunt, and then the sheets of his bed rustle. The room them fell to darkness, with only the lights from outside peeking through the curtains. It wasn't much, but it would have to do. The only comfort I had was the hundreds of reality anchors dotted throughout Site-01.
I let out a breath and closed my eyes. Hopefully, this trip would be over fast.

I shook my head. "More nervous about the summit " I said. Site-01 was nestled in the outskirts of London, and was where I was sent when the UPA were unsure of what to do with me. It was where I went to university to study ontokinetics and such. Site-01 was practically its own city, and I nly saw a fraction of it.
"You don't have to worry about the summit. I'll probably be the one talking from our group," he said.
I hope he was right. Not a lot of people believed or trusted what I had to say.
"Hey, can I ask about that chip in your head?" Nick asked aloud, causing Nicholas to groan. "Hey, I just wanna know why the UPA would do something fucked up!"
"You really think this is messed up?" I asked, once again pointing to the back of my head. "This isn't even the extreme. The UPA loves putting chips into peoples' bodies. Hell, my best friend got a grant to put three in his forehead."
"You're exagerating," Nick countered, though the look on his face said he was afraid I wasn't.
I wasn't. "He created the Brain Machine Interface. Three little dots that go right above the temporal lobe." I tapped the side of my head.
"Why would anyone do that?" Nicholas asked.
"It creates an augmented reality overlay over everything, so he can see everything's details," I said.
"And the UPA was just… fine with it?" Nick asked.
I nodded, holding on to the tidbit where Dustin had said he hadn't trusted the UPA with that kind of technology, so he hid the information on how to truly get it to work. As far as the higher ups knew, it didn't work at all and would kill him if they tried to remove it.
"Who's your friend?" Noah asked.
"Dr. Dustin Bates, director of the Artificial Intelligence Department," I said. He had asked so neutrally, I didn't know if there was anything he was thinking. Did he think I was incapable of having friends?
But before I could ask what he meant by that question, the front door opened. In trudged Matt - with a bag of Taco Bell - who groaned loudly. "I hate Ash, if you can believe it," he said loudly.
"Damn, dude. I didn't think he'd keep you over that long," Nick said.
"Jolly, you owe me for making me deal with that asshole all by myself," Matt said, dragging a chair over to the end of the table and sitting down.
"Why'd he keep you so long?" I asked.
"It was just to tell me about the changes to the Site tomorrow. Now not everybody's going fly to London tomorrow."
"Really? They're gonna just send Noah and Jolly again?" Nick complained.
I tried not to show my relief. That meant I could have a few days in my new place to do what I wanted. And no Noah? I wasn't going to complain.
"Not Noah and Jolly." Matt shook his head. I somehow knew what he was going to say before he turned me. "Noah and Mab are going to Site-01."
THERE WAS NO WAY I was going to be able to sleep tonight.
I couldn't even focus on the book I was reading; that I had brought mainly for the flight. I was trying to read it to distract myself, but I found myself staring at the same page, even the same sentence, over and over.
Just me and Noah.
Just the two of us going to Site-01, where I had been forced to begin anew. Where I knew that not even for a moment Noah would let me out of his sight.
I tilted my head backwards, staring up at the ceiling. The little holo projector Dustin got me for my birthday last year was the only thing keeping the darkness at bay. Right now, it was making the ceiling look like a copy of the night sky in July, with Ophiochus looking down at me. I remembered that it was Dustin's favorite constellation.
"Of all constellations," I had bemoaned, "why that one?"
Dustin had smiled at me, one corner of his lips lifting. "That's classified."
There was a soft knock at the door. I placed my bookmark into the crease and was shutting the book when Jolly peeked in.
"Everything to your liking?" He asked.
I couldn't tell if he was joking or not, so I nodded. He then slipped inside and shut the door behind him.
He looked down at the projector i had placed on the floor, and then looked up. "A light show?"
I didn't want to tell him that it acted as a night light; that their all powerful reality bender was scared of the dark. "It helps me sleep," i explained.
He moved easily around the junk that had been haphazardly moved to make room for me. It hadn't registered to me earlier, but I now realized that I had never seen him outside of his Ambassador uniform. His hair was down, and I saw his hair was longer than Nicholas'. Maybe longer than my hair was before the UPA made me cut half of it off.
"Are you good for tomorrow?" He asked as he sat down on the end of the mattress.
My stomach twisted at his words. When Matt had exclaimed the news earlier, Nick loudly complained about how he never got to go on these trips. As if Noah and I were going on a vacation, not a summit meeting. As if I wouldn't give up an important organ to let him go in my stead.
"I'm fine," I lied.
Jolly must've sensed my lie, for he frowned and his hand inched forward towards me. An involuntary reflex shuddered through me and I jerked my foot away from his hand. To try and ignore the embarrassment that flooded through me after the move, I focused on his one earring, which caught the dim light as it gently swayed from his own movement.
"Why do you hate Noah?" he asked.
I pulled my knees towards my chest, casting my eyes back up to avoid his weirdly piercing stare. "Hate is such a strong word," was all I said.
"Why are you cold towards him, then?"
Stupid Ambassador ability to detect any kind of personal issues…
I couldn't tell him about the years spent all by myself, fumbling around in the dark. It sounded completely stupid in my head, so what prevented him from thinking it was stupid? So I just sat there in silence, avoiding his attempts to break me open.
"If there's a misunderstanding, I'm sure if you two would talk it out—"
"Jolly." Just saying his name made him fall silent.
After a few moments, Jolly patted the mattress as if he was patting my shoulder. "Don't let this change freak you out. Everything will be okay." He stood up, turning towards the door, but stopped. "Who knows? Maybe being alone with Noah will change your feelings towards him."
That's what I was afraid of, was all I could think as he slipped out into the hallway.
THE OTHERS COULD HAVE warned me about Noah's fear of airplanes.
The early morning start was already soured by the inability to get a good night's sleep. I probably tossed and turned the whole night, maybe only getting a total of three hours. I had given up when I heard someone downstairs going down stairs, and I slipped down to join them. And slipped was an appropriate way of describing it, because I gave Jolly a fright when he turned and saw me in the kitchen.
Noah had come down an hour later, looking like he had just rolled out of bed. "You ready?" He yawned, raking his fingers through his dark hair.
I was sitting in the living room, dressed and hair straightened to the professional point, with my bag at my feet. "Yeah," I said plainly.
The tram took us to the border of the Nexus, where when we passed through, another car drove us to the nearest airport that would fly us internationally. Because of course we couldn't go in a copter or one of those fancy UPA planes with beds and showers.
I should have read the cues that Noah was nervous about flying. He wouldn't sit still at all while we waited to board, and when he did sit, his leg bounced relentlessly. But my "oh" moment was when we were on the runway, and as we taxied he was gripping the seats armrest with white knuckles.
But at least it meant a flight without speaking to one another.
When we touched down on British soil, it was almost midnight. Noah didn't Let out a breath until people were standing up to pull out their carry-ons. He didn't stand up right away.
"You okay?" I asked, which might have been the only thing I said to him the whole flight.
He just waved me off, taking a deep breath before standing.
I suppose one good thing about being in the Universal Paranatural Alliance was passing through customs without the long wait, and having someone there to meet us before driving to Site-01. And thanks to the time of night, I didn't have to wear sunglasses.
When we were on our way, Noah seemed to relax more. "Still awake?" He asked, nudging my shoe with his boot.
"Yep," I replied, going through my tab. I had to leave ECHO behind, and not hearing their little chirps left a void. I needed to set up a system in the new place that would allow them to follow me from Site-06.
"Talking to your boyfriend?" he asked.
I looked up, squinting my eyes. "I don't have a boyfriend."
"I know. I just wanted to get a reaction from you."
My chest burned, but I was distracted by the car passing through a ward. It felt a lot like Nexus barrier, only dulled. Also the car could be driven in it.
Site-0l was as extravagant as ever. No one knew why they chose this place to be the first Site. Only the Founding Administrators would know, and that had been over a century ago. But in the century since, they certainly built it up. Almost every department had its own building, and it even had sectors dedicated to companies that was a part of the Alliance. Some even say that it rivaled London itself in size.
The driver took us to guest housing, or more specifically, whatever address that had been given to Noah. He didn't stay long after we got out of the car; just long enough to pull my bag and Noah's suitcase out of the trunk.
Noah held the front door of the hotel open. "After you," he said.
Where the front had made it seem like it was an ordinary place to stay, the front lobby was the opposite. The only way to describe it was to liken it to the Waldorf Astoria. It almost dripped wealth. I'd hate to think how much a few nights here would cost if it wasn't for the UPA. And of course, the colors were all in UPA navy and silver.
In the elevator, Noah yawned. "I don't know about you, but I'm beat," he said.
I bobbed my head. I was beat, despite taking a short nap a couple of times. And I was ready to part ways with him for the night. Being so close to him for so long made my stomach feel weird.
But as I was ready to throw the awful day of travelling behind me, the universe threw one last "fuck you" in my face. Noah lead us down the hallway to our room.
A room.
I knew the UPA had housing that was at least like a condo. This place should have rooms like that. But here we were: a leather sofa, big flatscreen, a small kitchenette, and two beds. No privacy from Noah.
"I'm gonna take a shower before I go bed," he said, tossing his suitcase on the bed closest to the door. "I gotta shower this day off of me."
Same here, I thought, but waved for him to continue on. When I could plainly hear the water running, I hurriedly changed into my pajamas. The silk shorts and shirt felt childish in the presence of my current company, but it was all I really had. Maybe I could go out and get some more modest ones if I had the time.
I was slipping under the covers - which felt like heaven after sleeping in bunks and Site housing - as Noah finished his shower. I was purposely turned away from him.
"You don't want to take a shower?" I heard his voice.
"No, I'll take one in the morning," I said over my shoulder. The thought of taking a shower with him so close made my skin break out in goosebumps.
I heard a grunt, and then the sheets of his bed rustle. The room them fell to darkness, with only the lights from outside peeking through the curtains. It wasn't much, but it would have to do. The only comfort I had was the hundreds of reality anchors dotted throughout Site-01.
I let out a breath and closed my eyes. Hopefully, this trip would be over fast.

"Will?" You called out.
He's the only one who should be in your house at this ungodly hour. He left hours ago for a show and while its later than you expected him, at least he was back.
There was no response, but you could hear labored breathing coming from the kitchen. The closer you crept, the louder it became—but when you rounded the corner, you almost wished you'd stayed upstairs.
The back door was wide open, letting in the unseasonably cool air and bright silver moonlight. In the center, Will was on all fours, head hung low, breathing uneven and heavy. Taylor crouched down between the kitchen cupboards and the dining table, keeping the front door in their line of sight. Their hands shook as they tried to get Noah to answer what that cryptic warning meant for the millionth time. The thick hoodie they wore - stolen from Nicholas, but he hadn’t really noticed - suddenly felt too constricting, too hot. Their legs were bare, but they were too afraid to move to the bedroom.
Outside, the woods around the house were silent, making every noise they did hear, sound amplified. The wind would rustle the leaves, and they would strain to hear over it for hidden dangers. A branch would snap, causing them to hold their breath.

The knock on the door was soft. Too soft for someone Noah’s size. Taylor stared at the door, slowly rising from their hiding spot.
There was a second knock, this time slower. There was a scraping sound that traced its way down the wood, mirrored on Taylor’s spine. Their stomach dropped.

But eventually, their steps turned to stumbles, and then turned to leaning on trees for support rather than leverage. Their legs and feet were covered in mud, and they could barely feel their toes. They looked like they had truly been mauled.
In what seemed like forever and no time at all, a long howl ripped through the night. Taylor came to a screeching halt as they heard it, whipping their head toward the direction they thought it came from.
Their heart skipped a beat at the meaning of that howl. Their head start was up. The Grim was on the hunt.
Taylor's eyes swam with black spots, causing them to pause and lean against a tree again. They hoped that they had put enough distance between themself and the Grim so they could rest a little, but the sound of large paws thumping against the ground quickly proved them wrong. They froze, listening carefully for where the sound was coming from, and then darted off in the opposite direction.
But only few minutes later, their foot met empty air instead of firm ground, and they fell face first into a large hole. They cried out in pain and swore as they rolled over and cradled their arm to their chest. They were surrounded by four cobbled stone walls that were decayed, most likely the foundations of a house lost to time and the woods. They looked up to the treetops.
And saw Nick looming over them.
They scrambled backwards as best as they could as he jumped down into the pit. “Please,” they whispered. A tear rolled down their cheek.
“Hey. No. Taylor, stop,” he said, holding his hands out to halt them. “Time-out.”
“...Huh?” They looked up at him, confused as they tried to catch their breath.
“I’m calling a time-out right now. You’re hurt,” he said, pointing to the arm that was pressed to their chest.
Their brain finally caught up with Nick's declaration. "Folio, it's just a sprain. I'm fine," they said.
Nick shook his head in disbelief. Taylor was covered in dirt and scratches from the fall, their hair was a mess of tangles and leaves, and they thought they were fine. “I’m taking you to the Grove. You can heal up there."
Taylor opened their mouth to argue, but a warning snarl from him stopped them shortly. They crossed their arms over their chest, wincing as the movement aggravated the sprain, and sighed, their cheeks puffing out. “Fine.”
Nick reached down and lifted them up with ease, holding them to his front. They wrapped their arms around his neck and their legs around his waist as he clambered out of the pit and walked in the direction of the darkest part of the woods.
Taylor rested their head on Nick's shoulder. "Didn't take long for you to break character, huh?" they teased.
“Yeah, it just took you crying like a baby to break it,” he said with a snort. They tugged on the longest portion of his hair in retaliation.
It only took a few minutes for Taylor to fall asleep like that; their head lolled to fit in the curve of his neck. They were exhausted. It was fine to Nick.

Taylor crouched down between the kitchen cupboards and the dining table, keeping the front door in their line of sight. Their hands shook as they tried to get Noah to answer what that cryptic warning meant for the millionth time.
