Kazuki’s response is just going to earn him a hard pat on the back. Bringing up ‘floor snacks’ was just going to give the guy more pleasure out of making him mildly uncomfortable in regards to it. Even if he couldn’t help but be a little impressed by it in some strange way.

“Soup? There’s a cafe that serves a few different kinds that are good, so I’ll take you there.” Matt just grinned at Kazuki but there was still a look of disgust and concern that remained. Maybe he’d have a talk with the other grunts about having food lying around, that would probably solve it. Unless they were well aware and doing so on purpose. 

Why were these kids like this?

Floor food is going to get old, he’s sure of it. That means he has to find other ways to entertain people (himself, actually), but eating dirty sandwiches off the floor is as gross as he wants to make things. Maybe increasingly cutesy clothes for Yasu? Placing small plastic toy figures around the base for people to find like some sort of bizarre treasure hunting holiday? He has time to think about it.

“Maybe I can ask them to add a hair or two,” he suggested, making his way towards the exit of the base with Matt by his side. He briefly considers how they’re going to get to Lilycove. He’s not above clinging to land if there’s a suggestion of flight, ugh.

“One of my jobs is making sure you grunts aren’t causing problems or doing anything questionable. Making sure you have a proper meal I would say falls under that category.” At least keeping grunts out of trouble was just one of his jobs, if it was his only, well… Archie would of probably gotten rid of him by now. The whole, not in front of you had gone over his head. Sure he didn’t trust Kazuki not to do it again just yet but maybe he’d do it less? 

Matt gave the other a rough pat to the shoulder when it seemed as though he was ready to leave. He almost questioned why he bothered putting out the wet floor sign in the hall. It wasn’t exactly particularly dry in most of the spots in the base. The other grunts should know to be careful– but really that was probably asking to much of them. “There’s quite a few good restaurants in Lilycove. What kind of food do you like?”

“And I’m to assume that also means the janitor.” He knows it’s not really a question. Of course Matt also means the janitor. He’d have to be incredibly dense to not notice the care that Aqua puts into its members. It’s a huge bonus for wanting to work here, and if he enjoys the company, well, that’s his business. 

“Aside from floor delicacies?” He asked, the corner of his mouth turning up a smidge. “You might not have noticed, but I’m not all that picky. I could go for something warm, though. Soup, maybe? That’s not something I can find under one of these tables.”

Oh. Had this been some weird elaborate way of just getting a free meal outside of the base? Or was he just taking advantage of the offer? Either way he was impressed in a sort of weird way. “Well I promise not to tell boss about this if you stop eating things off of the floor, alright?” He would 100% talk to Archie about this reguardless. “If that uuuh– Floor sandwich wasn’t filling enough we could go now–” Though there was the mild fear he had eaten more things off of the ground earlier today. This entire experience would probably keep him up tonight. 

“I promise I won’t eat food off the floor in front of you,” he says, but honestly? He’s probably not going to eat food off the floor if he’s alone, anyway. Maybe in front of some of the other Aqua grunts, but they’d either high five him or look on in the same disgust Matt had.

“I’m due for a break now if you have nothing urgent on your plate.” He sets the mop onto his cart, a small puddle of water left behind. He pulls off a ‘slippery floor’ sign and sets it down, then moves the cart towards a wall, where it’ll be out of the way. It goes without saying that if anyone takes or messes with anything on it, there will be consequences. He pulls out a pokeball, trading Yasu for his trusty Manectric. He can’t exactly carry a large Magikarp around, after all.

“No! And I have no intention on eating off the floor. Is the food here not good enough? Is it not something you want to eat? Because If that’s the case we can fix things. I’m sure Archie doesn’t want any of ya to be eating off the floor for whatever reason. Look if you promise to not do that again I’ll take you out for some real food.”

He knew most of their members all had some sort of quirk one way or another but this was one of the more concerning he’d seen. The poor guy was going to make himself sick. God knows what he was feeding his pokemon. 

“The food’s just fine here. ‘Sides, it’s kind of a waste to leave perfectly good sandwiches on the floor, isn’t it?” This is as good as he’d wanted it to be. The reaction- well, it’s reasonable. Who eats gross food off the floor? Even for a joke, it’s extreme. Still, he’s entertained.

“However, I am not the kind of person to turn down free meals. If that’s on the table, or floor- get it? Because I just- never mind. I’m up for it.”

At least the sandwich was in the trash, where it should of been this entire encounter. What was still concerning was that the grunt had just continued to stare at him. Was he intimidated? Or had he just simply lost it? Granted  the man was just eating food off of the floor so maybe he’d prefer if that was the case.

“Little buddy. you know it ain’t really good for you to being doing things like that.” Yeah he’s just– going to be gentle about it for now. 

“Have you tried it?” He asked, a hand moving to his hip. “‘Cause if you haven’t, how do you know it’s going to be as bad as you think it will be?” It was just as horrible as the other probably thought, but he’s not going to say that. No, what he’s going to do is pull his mop out and let water slap all over the weird stain the sandwich left behind on the linoleum.

Matt opened his mouth to say something, but slowly it just closed right back up. There wasn’t exactly anything he could say to what was unfolding in front of him, well there were several. Perhaps it was a lack of starting point. Where to begin? Why? was the main question. And several more whys that would probably follow. Should he order him to throw it away? At least put it back where he found it? No he’s just left staring right back at the grunt who seemed to think nothing of putting something covered in dirt and hairs into his mouth.

Common sense wins out over his need to traumatize his boss and he tosses the sandwich into the trashcan on his cart, narrowly missing Yasu with a flying...tomato? It’s probably a tomato. Were he a stronger man with an iron stomach, he would have attempted to simply consume it all, but he’s not stupid. He knows that sandwich has been on the floor for far too long.

Looking up from the ham sandwich- well, the sandwich seems like it might be ham, but it could easily be bologna- in his hand, Kazuki pauses. He processes the words just fine, but the look on the other guy’s face is the last remaining push that gets him to take the slowest bite of the already bitten sandwich. It barely even has to touch his tongue for him to be able to tell that a) it’s not right, b) it’s kind of stale, and c) there’s some hairs on it. He doesn’t say anything as he chews.
