I don't care if you don't want to get better. I don't care if you don't want to improve yourself. That is entirely your choice and I never want to take away someone's autonomy.
But you also have to realize that with your decision to not improve that you are likely going to lose some people you would have otherwise had if you improved. If you're a shitty friend, people won't want to be friends with you. If you're an asshole to others, people won't want to be friends with you. If you're friends with shitty people, people won't want to be friends with you*. You can't expect every person to bend over backwards for you. They also have their own autonomy, and that includes choosing to not be around you.
If you actively choose to not improve then blame others on not being your friend, maybe think about why that is.
*This is not about situations where there is some binding thing (like abuse) going on. If you actively choose to be friends with a bad person, that's on you.
Okay, we got a new one, boys.
Close enough welcome back Chekov's gun.
Prev you can’t bury this in your own tags
I also like the idea of showing something as a problem before it’s shown as a strength. Almost every character trait has two sides, and by showing the “bad” side first, it sets things up to not only make sense, but to also be very satisfying.
Chief Touch the Clouds (c. 1838-1905) of the Miniconjou tribe of the Lakota Sioux people. Fun facts: His brothers were Spotted Elk, Frog, and Roman Nose. There is evidence suggesting that Crazy Horse was a cousin. Photo taken by James H. Hamilton at the Spotted Tail Agency, Nebraska, in the fall of 1877.

"Simplicity, to me, has always been the essence of good taste." Cary Grant
Any time someone starts some bullshit about how humans are hyperindividualistic and inherently selfish and exclusively motivated by self-intetest, I'll just tell them to go ahead and go do it then. Go live alone. Fuck off into the woods to make sure that no society ever benefits from your presence. See if you can teach yourself how to make a spear out of a rock or a shelter for one from nothing but your own wits and the nature around you. Go see how natural that feels, how happy it makes you to know that you don't need nobody and that nobody's life is improved by your presence.
So how come you don't have that skillset? Solitary animals that don't meet other members of their species outside of mating seasons tend to just fuck off from the nest and be completely fine on their own. Rattlesnakes don't need instructions for how to rattlesnake. Needing to be taught human survival skills implies you would need other people.
Fifty Years Ago... The F-units of Latta Yard
Back in the 1970s, there was a little set of F-units, one being a slug, that seemed to be based at Latta Yard in Jasonville, Indiana. This is along the Milwaukee Road’s Southeastern line.
We would venture over to do night shots every so often, and this one hosted a nearly-full moon. The times were very different then—with rail photographers being able to crawl all over the units, inside and out.

That's the end of the USA's World Cup dreams.
