It wasn’t until Madison said it back that Shane realized what she said. For the first time, she actually meant it when she said it it; it wasn’t just a throw away line to make them stop fighting. She loved Madison and the fact that she assumed Shane was cheating this whole time hurt. It wasn’t a far fetched idea, but it still hurt. She smiled a little when she said it back. It was probably also the only time anyone had ever said it to Shane, apart from her parents. She had so many problems, she always saw herself as unlovable. Yet here was Madison, trying to fight for their relationship.
When Madison started asking Shane about what she’s been doing, it took her a second to think of the right thing to say. She didn’t want to scare the young girl away with her mess and problems, but this may be the only chance they’ll have to talk about this before Madison decides she can’t handle it anymore. She moved to the couch, dropping down and putting her head in her hands. The room was starting to spin so she just kept her eyes closed as she spoke. “I-I don’t know, it’s like friends’ and dealers’ houses. Sometimes clubs or parties…I’m safe, I promise.” At the offer to do it at home or have Madison drive her actually terrified her. It was different than Madison being drunk all the time. Shane felt like a different person when she was high, she didn’t want Madison to see her at her worst and scare her away. “I’m sorry I worry you so much,” she lowered her voice a little. “I never meant for this to happen…”
Madison picked herself off of the floor to move closer to Shane. She wasn’t sure if Shane would appreciate her getting in her personal space right now, but it had made Madison feel better when Shane sat next to her. She rubbed her girlfriend’s back as she talked. “That doesn’t sound very safe,” Madison said quietly. She was still trying to find her footing between open conversation and overstepping her bounds. “I want to know that there’s someone there that would...” Madison paused for a moment, swallowing down all the emotions coming up. “That would call an ambulance if something happened; And someone who’s gonna make sure you make it home in one piece.” Madison stroked Shane’s hair. “It’s okay,” She reassured her. She didn’t want Shane beating herself up over something like this. “Do you wanna stop?” She asked impulsively. “If you could get help would you wanna stop?”
