A glimpse of heartbroken Anne when everyone is excited about potential suitors except her.

she knows there are no other suitors for her other than Gilbert. And he’s getting married to someone else.

This was the part I’ve been waiting for - for them all to go to college and see the world outside of Avonlea, meet new people, have new experiences and that includes OTHER suitors besides the Avonlea boys. We know Anne and Gil will end up together but Anne being courted by other guys besides Gil and Charlie Sloane was important for her - the thrill of meeting someone entirely new, of being courted by someone from a different background. Come to think of it, this isn’t even where Anne meets Roy, they had seasons full of stories yet to tell and they could have dragged Shirbert out for ages had they done it right...

Alright, let’s dissect this:

Some people say that Gilbert only realized he loved Anne in that moment when he sees her drunk dancing...

However...

Gilbert was ready to put them up on the notice boards before Anne dropped Ruby’s name at the start of the season. 

Gilbert knows he loves Anne. He’s known it for a long time - that’s why the Winifred detour feels so forced and out of nowhere. 

Fact is that Gilbert seems to be more attracted to the life Winifred can afford him than to Winifred herself: 

For example: everyone constantly has to point out to Gilbert how beautiful and elegant Winifred is (which constantly drones in Anne’s ears and feels like insult to injury for her because she is insecure about her beauty), yet we don’t really see Gilbert looking at Winifred as if he sees the most beautiful thing in the world to him...kinda like the way Gilbert has looked at Anne Shirley since S1

Like she’s the cutest thing ever

or “notice me, senpai”

Like he can’t believe she exists in the same universe

..and she puts the sun to shame with her glow

...or like she’s so amazing and beautiful and unattainable, it breaks his heart...

So apparenty, they have gone with the concept “show, don’t tell” for Shirbert (or at least Gilbert’s side of it) and I get it. Though it would still be nice and show Gilbert in a slightly less idiotic light, if he manned up and finally spoke to Anne (the chapter in Anne of the Island where Gilbert proposes is literally called “Gilbert speaks” sooooo....)

Winifred or no Winifred, what really irks me is that they are casting doubt on Gilbert's feelings for Anne and I don't see why this is necessary...

It’s just the tired old trope of making the female lead character suffer...

Because girls always need pain to build character, right?!?! Right?!?!?!?!

Anne Shirley, by this age, should be gaining confidence through academic achievements and her amazing friendships --- not cry over Gilbert Blythe getting engaged to some random girl

They are turning Anne into S1!Ruby and I don’t know how this happened. 

Of course, I know they will turn it all around eventually, but I feel like they were just adding drama for drama’s sake and it did nothing for the characters, nor their relationships.

I don’t want Roy to appear yet...

I want Anne to fall madly love with a dashing young Women’s Rights advocate named Perceval Dalrymple (whose father owns the Rollings Reliable baking powder company)

He’s read her article and wanted to meet the lady who wrote so passionately about Women’s Rights. Perceval expected to find a serious older woman to have been the authoress of the piece and is completely taken aback by Anne. 

After his meeting with her, he keeps finding excuses to prolong his stay in Avonlea, like breaking the printing press in order to fix it again, and offering his help on the farm (though he’s never done farm work before). 

Anne is still pining for Gilbert, so she does not notice that Perceval is interested in more than just friendship. When he has to return home to Charlottetown, his proposal takes Anne by surprise and she refuses. 

Heartbroken, Perceval leaves. However, they will see each other again one day...

...in Kingsport.

Because...if they can write an entire non-canon made-up romance/courtship for Gilbert with OC (that nobody asked for), at least give us one for Anne as well!
