Diana: Gilbert told Charlie Sloan you were the smartest girl in school, right in front of Josie. Anne: He did? Diana: He told Charlie that being smart was better than being good looking. Anne: I might have known he'd meant to insult me, it isn't better. I'd much rather be pretty than smart, but at least I don't have to cheat like Josie does. Diana: She doesn't have to cheat, she just does it because she's a Pye.

Imagine Cole, Diana, Bash, Ms Stacy, Marilla and Mrs Lynde all having a bet on Anne and Gilbert. And when Anne or Gilbert writes to them telling them about how they are in love and have kissed. Then all of them at the same time yell in excitement. With Cole winning the most money.

On my like 10th rewatch of Anne with an E and ive just noticed something:

Gilbert meets Winifred and is immediately interested with her, finding her funny and sweet the more time he spends with her, which is what drives him to believe he could live out his life with her.

But i don’t think enough focus is placed on the circumstances of their first meeting on screen- Gilbert comes across Winifred talking to the model skeleton as she dusts it; his first impression of her is that she is playful and has an imagination.

This in my opinion is deliberate as one of annes main traits is her playfulness and her imagination (I’m pretty sure the word imagination is the most said word in annes entire vocabulary), and therefore makes the link from Winifred to Anne in Gilbert’s brain. We know he took notice of her due to her striking difference from the other girls in their class, who are all marriage driven and composed in the presence of boys, with her wild and passionate attitude to life and the world around her.

While courting Winifred he enjoys her company, however is intimidated by the more upper class way that she composes herself, which hides away the more imaginative part of her.

Gilberts decision to reject Winifred is based from his realisation that he is much more infatuated with Anne, and that he has looked for her in the multiple parts of Avonlea as well as winifred herself.

He realises that Winifred isn’t the person for him because their courtship began with the thought of Anne.
