x reader tips

it might seem like a lot of rules, but i promise you can write an immersive fic without excluding half the fan base

all hair cannot simply be run through with someone’s hands, or pulled. a pat on the head will do

everybody cannot do the same hair routine. air drying and just waking up with no work isn’t realistic for a lot of people. just don’t mention it.

if the character and the reader have kids, don’t describe the kids traits. the reader could be anyone which means the baby can look like anything. they will probably not inherit Bland Blake’s Beautiful Blue Orbs

calling certain things foreign won’t work. don’t write about something Spanish seeming strange to the reader, the reader could be Hispanic

this is a common one, but pleaseeeeee don’t say their face turns red. after a certain skin tone that just won’t happen

less important than the others, it’s preferred if you don’t mention favorite colors, or anything really. instead of “he got it in purple” or “he got your comfort chinese food” just say “he got your favorite”

this one’s a personal preference as a black girl, but work out the relative situation. being biologically related to some white man never works for anyone who’s not white, so just making the reader adopted can help

for the love of god, if you’re writing a plug!character or anything of the sort, stop making them sound like they’re from the hood. yall are weird for that.

not everyone will fit your idea of femininity. you can describe the readers beauty without describing their “soft laugh” “long lashes” “pink plump lips” “long slender legs” “doe eyes” “delicate hands” etc. (please guys)

body types. if you’re writing about a skinny ass guy, or any guy, his hoodie will not be huge on everyone. the character will not be able to pick every reader up

heights. don’t say the character leaned down for the kiss; just let them kiss (leaned in maybe).

if you’re writing gender neutral, make it gender neutral. even using certain gender roles can give the impression of a gendered reader

most importantly

listen to people. if they say something you write is an issue, then it probably is. accept the feedback and move forward accordingly

dont get offended if you come across a black!reader or something similar. the things listed above make it so groups of people can’t enjoy general fanfic without carving a space for themselves

don’t be afraid to ask questions! most people will be more upset by a lack of carelessness than “overthinking”

yellowjackets except they did it to themselves. she was killed. she chose to pick up that knife.

yellowjackets and they can’t shift the blame. the plane crash happened to them, but everything after that happened because of them.

In town, Ophelia was a Yellowjacket. Not a striker, but she stung nonetheless. She wore the stripes like something to be proud of. They were.

At home, Ophelia became a lion. A strong, steady presence in her household. Her mother's golden child. Her brother's idol. Her father's Leo.

But in the Wilderness, she is something else. She isn't sure what. Something evil, surely. Something savage. There is snake-like site in the way she slithers through vines on the hunt for tonight's meal. She thinks of coyotes and bears as she feasts on the flesh. But deep down, underneath her new teeth and claws, there is a feeling that taints every swift step.

It is not the racing sensation of a prey animal's fear. It is not even the satisfaction that comes with a predator's kill. It is a sensitivity all too familiar to Ophelia. It is hunger.

She is human.

her vs laura lee.

laura lee who joins an institution to be saved and oc who's trying her hardest to stay out of one. laura lee who leaves her fate in god's hands and oc who tries to play god to control hers. laura lee running towards something and oc running away from something else.

laura lee who dies in a plane to get them to safety and oc who did nothing.

yellowjackets oc who is the one who remembers. she's the one holding on. she collects and crafts memories of their lives back home. this frustrates some and earns pity from others. she's a hoarder. she warns the others from doing bad things in the name of who they are. who they used to be.

she keeps this up as long as she can but that is not forever. she slips. she's kicking up the sand where her lines were once drawn. she starts to wonder why it is so easy now, to forget. to live here and now. are things just getting that desperate? or was she always like this?

ophelia barnes. her father is in jail and her mother wants her to "stay straight" to stay out. so she does. her entire life is driven by doing the right thing. but in the wilderness they have to survive and how could survival be wrong?

so ophelia's morality shifts. she starts to make choices she never thought she would, even knowing the circumstances. but without her morality, ophelia is without herself. so she justifies and twists everything she does - everything anyone else does - so that she comes out right. not necessarily on top, but right.

she starts to decide what right is. and it's dangerous.

i really think uwe is such a good use of the "came back wrong" trope because of its use of perspective.

with reawakenings, the hosts don't physically die. it's more of a death of identity. if everything had gone smoothly, emma would be essentially gone within her own body. her soul would be so suppressed, it would be considered non-existent.

from winston's (and sort of emma's) perspective, she has come back wrong. something happened to her and now something is wrong with her. melinda is the wrong.

from edred's perspective, melinda has come back wrong. emma is the wrong. really, emma isn't even real to him.

and, unlike many came back wrong tropes, the center of this one is the person (people) who came back "wrong". emmalinda push against other people's (and each others) demands and expectations of them. and ultimately, the only way to make themself "right" again is by accepting each other.

"came back wrong" is often used as a metaphor for change or grief. in uwe, it isn't a metaphor. the characters did change and are grieving the loss that came with it; the loss of identity, the loss of relationships, and the loss of the ability to simply not change. as bad as they were for each other, themselves, and outsiders sometimes, it's made clear that the characters liked it that way. unicorn doesn't get that anymore. they don't get to discard their hosts anymore. for the first time, they come back and are made to feel that they are wrong.

oc dump

uwe oc named oya that's the loser daughter of basically gaia. physically based on sally swing because i want to keep the rubber hose style but cannot draw (and sort of a ref to how emma is reminiscent of betty boop)

oya is named after the orisha goddess who has control over wind and storms. oya (the oc) has control over all facets of nature but cannot generate them. she mostly uses wind because it is literally everywhere.

oya is reawakened in the body of juliet, a reporter.

when reawakened, oya retains all of her memories up to the formation of unicorn, meaning she doesn't really have the same dedication to the cause as the others. additionally, she has some issues with her powers. being in the modern world makes the oya side of her feel detached and removed from a part of herself (nature), but being surrounded by nature and sensing it overwhelms juliet.

goddddddd. galinda wanting to be wanted/needed by elphie. she needs reassurance. but she's hesitant to ask for it but she also wants elphie to know she can be relied on

"it was a mistake" as in leaving you was a mistake, leaving you and taking fiyero was a mistake, leaving with fiyero was a mistake because now elphie has to deal with the yearning and the guilt of her yearning.

morrible calls for elphaba and she takes galinda with her. because she wont leave her behind again. morrible calls for only elphaba but she takes galinda with her because its never only elphaba and it hasnt been since they met.

(and galinda knows morrible only wants elphie so she just sits prettily, thinking elphie is going to leave her. (look at her face she was ready for that) but elphie takes her hand and now glinda's smiling and skipping with her)
