When she was 16, a dome of darkness appeared and surrounded her city. When the PRISM fighters began appearing, she decided she wanted to help and join the battle against the absence! So she’d train in secret, knowing her mom wouldn’t want her out there like that.
When she was 18, Aphmau tried signing up as soon as she could, but Apollo told them that he wasn’t taking any new fighters yet, but soon. He said they could work elsewhere in the PRISMcorps though, until they opened PRISM applications again. So, determined to help out where she could, she did!
She became part of the clinic area, helping patch up wounded soldiers after battles and any civilians who had been caught up in the crossfire.
Then one day, she met Shad. He was one of the few PRISM soldiers that decided to keep his civilian identity secret. He had come in pretty banged up, but when Aph tried to tend to his injuries, he acted like a big baby about it! “I got it, mimimimimi” and whatever else he said.
The two immediately butted heads, and would argue anytime they ran into each other.
Eventually, when applications opened back up, Aph was one of the first to sign up. And they got it! They named their little PRISM creature Celestia.
Deciding to take one little thing from Shad’s book, she decided to keep her own identity a secret too. Thus becoming Lady Irene, a healer and a brave soldier for the people. And she was more determined than EVER to do what she could to help.
Unfortunately, as luck would have it, Aphmau’s PRISM and her transformed self as Lady Irene went hand in hand with Shad’s, and it seemed they were meant to be partners.
Shad suggested they spar against each other and he could help train her. Irene scoffed at this, but accepted, ready to finally be able to kick his butt after all the arguments she’d had with him as Aphmau and whatnot — but he kept winning. He didn’t gloat, though, just gave her some pointers.
He was a good fighter. He trained her, and soon they got closer as partners in battle. They knew each other’s moves, they were wonderful partners, they were great friends.
Then one day, after a long day that had ended off with a huge battle, Aphmau, in her weary state that night, had gotten careless. And Shad found out that Lady Irene was Aphmau.
Instead of laughing or making fun of her or any of that like Aphmau had been worried he’d do, he detransformed too, and there he was. Shad, a regular young man around her age, named Aaron.
They grew even closer as friends, now able to share the normal parts of their lives with each other too. They even started flirting, platonic shifting into romantic.
Somehow their teamwork got even better, like they could read each other’s minds and always knew what the other would do. They were incredible together! Nothing could ever come between them—
There was a battle. A particularly dangerous absence monster. Irene messed up. Shad pushed her out of the way, and maybe he knew he wasn’t getting out of this, because he gave her his PRISM as he did so, said, “As long as there is air in your lungs, this won’t be for nothing…” and then disappeared before Irene.. no, before Aphmau could reach for him and get him back.
After that, it was all a blur. Other soldiers came in to help take care of it. Some of them lead her away, back home.
And back at the compound, at her dorm in the headquarters, Aphmau sat there on her bed. The tears wouldn’t stop, and a deep, empty, sorrowful numbness began to grow in her chest. All she had of him now was his red bandana, and his PRISM, named FC. She swore she’d take care of them, for him. And even though it all hurt, ached from deeply within her, she promised she’d keep fighting. Doing what she could to help, like she wanted, like he wanted.
As long as there was air in her lungs.
