Viking Treasure Trove Unearthed from English Field

A nationally significant discovery of Viking treasure dating from the 9th century was unveiled yesterday at London’s British Museum. The hoard of silver coins and jewelry found in a farmer’s field by a metal detector hobbyist has the potential to rewrite English history.
James Mather was giving up hope of getting a birthday surprise. After spending hours scanning a muddy field 40 miles west of London with his metal detector, the treasure hunter had nothing to show for his time except for some stray soda can tabs and cartridge cases, according to the Guardian newspaper. But just as the retired advertising manager was ready to find a more festive way to celebrate his 60th birthday this past October, he spotted something that resembled a silver Viking ingot he had once seen at the British Museum embedded in the ground.

Balin’s Tomb.
Balin’s Tomb was the tomb of Balin, Lord of Moria. Balin was killed at the hands of Moria orcs in T.A. 2994 in Dimrill Dale. He was promptly buried in a tomb in the center of the Chamber of Mazarbul, Balin’s former seat, which itself was located off the north end of the Twenty-first Hall. The Fellowship of the Ring, journeying through Moria in 3019, found his tomb. A shaft of light from outside of the mountain fell directly onto Balin’s Tomb, though it is not known what the shaft originally lit. The Chamber was the site of a battle between the Fellowship and a group of attacking orcs.
The tomb was made of a single oblong block, about two feet high, underneath a large slab of white stone. Runes were cut deeply into the slab:
BALIN FUNDINUL UZBADKHAZADDUMU BALINSONOVFUNDINLORDOVMORIA
Paraphrased, it says: “Balin Fundinul Uzbad Khazaddumu” - “Balin Son of Fundin Lord of Moria.”
The runes carved into Balin’s Tomb were Angerthas Moria, used before the flight of the Dwarves. The top, larger runes (the first three lines) are written in Khuzdul, while the smaller ones of the final line below, were in the Common Speech, written with Angerthas Erebor.The Dwarves never used their "true” Khuzdul names, not even in inscriptions, but rather their names in a Mannish dialect of the Northmen. Tolkien, having translated all uses of Mannish into modern English and Norse, rendered these names as “Balin” and “Fundin”, as he did the other words in the last line of the inscription. The name “Moria” was used, for by the time of the inscription, it had become the accepted name for Khazad-dûm in the Common Speech. The use of English to represent the Common Speech in primary sources such as the inscription on Balin’s Tomb was a result of Tolkien’s vision of completely translating all Westron into modern English, even in authentic documentation, although upon reflection Tolkien said that this translation was “an erroneous extension of the general linguistic treatment”.
Rare Anglo-Saxon Runic Ring, 9th-10th Century AD
There are only seven known rings of the Anglo-Saxon period (9th or 10th century) bearing runic inscriptions. This one is known as the Kingmoor Ring since it was found near Greymoor Hill in Kingmoor, England.
The inscription reads: ÆRKRIUFLTKRIURIÞONGLÆSTÆPON-TOL with the last three runes “TOL” being written on the inside of the ring. Another gold ring with an almost identical inscription was found at Bramham Moor in Yorkshire.
Various attempts to decipher the inscriptions on these two rings have not been successful. Three words occur in each case and the meaning is assumed to be magical or amuletic.

Johanna Thorvaldsdóttir’s Icelandic goat farm (Háafell) is facing foreclosure in September, resulting in the entire goat flock being butchered - unless enough funds are raised to save it!
There are less than 820 Icelandic goats in the entire world - they are an endangered species. Almost half of them will be lost if this farm is not saved. I visited Háafell 2 years ago and every goat I draw is rooted in this place. Any little bit helps :)

One of the best feelings is knowing that you’re wanted. Knowing that someone wants to talk to you, wants to know how you’re doing, wants to se you. Whether they pick up the phone to send you a quick text or stop by your house to catch up, someone or something reminded them of you specifically.
