“Do you remember what date is it today?”
“17 of August?”
His eyebrows raised, and his eyes tinted with annoyance, told you that it in fact was just a regular day to him. Nothing… special, at all. You sighed softly, as your body showed a slight change in posture, but he didn’t take notice of it at all. The small gift in your hand, was something you wanted to give, but not sure if you wanted to either. But, you stretched out your hand, despite the disappointment crushing you down, and the tears in your eyes slowly welling up.
“…H-here.” His eyes glanced over the box with a small ribbon on top, and raised his eyebrows skeptically. His hand reached for the box, and enveloped it in his huge palm and long fingers.
“Is it a special day today or what?” He let out a small chuckle, and that ignorant laugh made you look away from his face, afraid your tears would spill in front of his eyes. A droplet trickled down the side of your face, and your hand quickly wiped it off. He opened the box, and revealed a small, ticking object.
“A watch?” He looked at you, not sure how he should react.
“The one you wanted a long time ago, but I just didn’t have enough money at that time. I hope you like it.” You miraculously stabilised your voice, and forced a smile at him.
“Oh… Thanks. I got it for myself a long time ago though…” He smiled apologetically, and you didn’t know what you should feel. Angry? Sad? Betrayed? Nothing really fit that feeling that you felt. You questioned if you even know him anymore, and what were the things that he did that you didn’t know of? You really felt like breaking down and crying, just right in front of him, but for some reason, you felt afraid. Afraid that he wouldn’t ask you what was wrong. Afraid that he would merely scoff and leave, just like he did many times recently. Afraid that he didn’t love you enough. Afraid that he didn’t love you anymore.
“Oh.”
“Anyway, why all of a sudden? You don’t really buy me gifts.” He smiled as he closed the box, and placed it on the table, as your eyes stayed on the small box. This wasn’t supposed to be the last gift, but you decided to make it the last.
“It’s a… Farewell gift.”
You couldn’t look at his face, but you were sure his face was plagued with confusion and question marks scattered all over his brain.
“You’re going somewhere? But you don’t need to give it to me…” He trailed off, and then it suddenly hit him, his eyes widened. Were you saying goodbye to him?
“I don’t think this is working out anymore, Taehyung.” He flinched. You never called him by his name like that, unless it was in a playful tone. Other than that, you’d call him by his pet names.
“We’re fine, what are you talking about?” He took a step closer to you, and attempted to get a hold of your wrist, but you took a step back, almost instantly.
“We aren’t. Haven’t you realised how little we’ve been smiling around each other recently? And it is as though you’re annoyed at me. Things just haven’t been the same, and we haven’t been the same either. We changed and we are both now at different frequencies, we can’t click.” You tried to explain as rationally as you can without your voice cracking or raising it. You finally had the courage to look him in the eyes, and the sight was absolutely heartbreaking. His eyes a little wetter, and he looks like he is having an internal conflict of some sort.
“I- I…” He muttered, but stopped because he didn’t know what to say, or what he should do. You smiled weakly and shook your head.
“It’s okay, Taehyung-ah. After all, I know you feel the same. We’ve been dating for a long time and things don’t happen the way we want them to. Perhaps this means we both need to go explore our own paths?” You tried to keep your tears in for almost an eternity, but they became an endless stream.
“Are we breaking up?” His voice cracked as he attempted the four words, that he’d never want to ask, but what you said was absolutely true that he couldn’t deny. Those same four words shot through your heart, as you nodded. This is the end.
You couldn’t possibly go into his arms for a hug, as much as you wanted, you knew that if you did that, you’d never get out and history would simply repeat itself based on past experiences. You turned your body away, and took small, slow strides towards the front door, before his voice halted you.
“H-happy 5th anniversary, Y/N.” ________________
