April 28th - the challenge
Contrast
Today’s challenge is to draw something with a lot of contrast - either with a wide difference in value/brightness, by using complementary colors, or by emphasizing the differences between two objects or characters!
Day 27 - the challenge
Dreams
Today, try drawing something from a dream! See if you can remember one well enough to show it, or just extrapolate from what you do remember. If you don’t want to draw any of your own dreams, draw one a friend has told you about, or something to do with an aspiration or fantasy!
April 26th - the challenge
Weather
What’s your favorite weather? Snow? Rain? Sunshine? Maybe draw someone getting blown over in the wind, or swimming on a hot day. Birds singing. Flowers blooming. Corvids sledding down roofs.
April 25th - the challenge
Space
Draw something inspired by space! Maybe practice drawing glowing stars, or a spaceship, or some aliens!
April 24 - the challenge
Travel
Draw a character moving from place to place, be it walking, bicycling, going on a road trip, etc. Alternatively, draw someplace you’ve visited away from home, or someplace an OC might visit if they got a vacation!
April 20th - the challenge
Interaction
Draw two or more people interacting - maybe a conspicuously-cuddling couple, or some frenemies flirting while fighting, or a teacher trying to tutor a toddler in typing!
April 19th - the challenge
Movement
Draw something that moves! Maybe a person running, spinning, or fighting, or a bird in flight, or a river - just practice communicating motion in a still image.
Alternatively, if you have time for it, try an animation study!
April 18th - the challenge
Light
Today, practice your lighting & shading - water and glass are particularly interesting to reference for this, but any object will make some neat shadows if you put a strong light on it!
April 17th - the challenge
Patterns
Try drawing a texture or pattern that loops cleanly wallpaper-style, or use a pattern as part of a larger image - maybe make a flower out of smaller flowers, or draw something made with patterned fabric or that has a pattern painted on.
Day 16 - the challenge
Outfits
Design some clothes!
As a worldbuilding exercise, think about what styles of dress would be popular in your setting - are people making their own clothes out of whatever they have access to, or buying it factory-made?
Or as a technical exercise, see if you can make the shading and textures on the folds and seams accurate!
April 15th - the challenge
30-second drawings
Today, set a timer and see what you can do in just 30 seconds! Do a bunch of them if you have time - just practice sketching out a scene or a pose quickly without any details.
April 13th - the challenge
Fanart
Draw something from your favorite story! For an extra challenge, pay attention to the ways the original’s art style (or word choice, characterization, etc) differs from your own, and experiment with borrowing some elements from the original.
April 12th - the challenge
Flight
Draw a character taking flight, either literally (with wings or a plane) or more metaphorically by leaving home or escaping a bad situation!
April 11th - the challenge
Comics
Maybe I’m biased in their favor, but comics can be a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone! Sketch out an establishing shot that places your characters in the setting, try communicating the atmosphere and emotion of a conversation over several panels, or block out an action scene that keeps the action flowing!
April 10th - the challenge
Continuity
Make a drawing that’s continuous, either by using one line to draw the whole thing or through a composition that keeps objects close together. You can also explore it as a more symbolic theme, showing different places or time periods with a common thread!
April 9th - the challenge
Celebration
Draw a party! Or a smaller, private celebration. Could be a birthday, a holiday, or a wedding. As a worldbuilding exercise, think about what holidays would be celebrated in your setting, or for a technical challenge, practice drawing a crowd of people in perspective!
