“I'm on Step Four of Module Two in Make Your Own Work.I spent this week writing from the prompts we pulled out from last week's morning pages. And whoa. I didn't know I had all that to say. Simple prompts based on themes that recurred were like doorways. I was trying to get to the end of the hallway and take the stairs to the rooftop, but I needed to stay on the floor I was on, and explore the rooms. I learned that maybe I was taking my experiences for granted. Getting to each memory and writing it down gave me perspective. I've wanted to write about other characters for so long....but it's making sense why it was difficult with all this other stuff floating in my brain, memory and spirit. I challenge artists to become entrepreneurs and survive so story can keep us human. Art for art’s sake is self-indulgent at a time when humanity needs to be reminded of its humanity the most. We have a unique opportunity to finally take charge of our stories ...if we resist learning how to become entrepreneurs, we miss this moment and either disappear or return to the non profit plantation where a couple of people make 6 figures and everyone else makes less than unemployment...making & creating work and producing and protecting it is the most creative thing we can do...instead we resist and return to depending on institutions to decide what stories should be told for $100 per show... The Lie says to the Truth: It's a marvelous day today" The Truth looks up to the skies & sighs, for the day was really beautiful. They spend a lot of time together, ultimately arriving beside a well. The Lie tells the Truth: The water is very nice, let's take a bath together! The Truth, once again suspicious, tests the water & discovers that it is indeed very nice. They undress & start bathing. Suddenly, the Lie comes out of the water, puts on the clothes of the Truth & runs away. The furious Truth comes out of the well & runs everywhere to find the Lie, to get her clothes back. The World seeing the Truth naked turns its gaze away w/contempt & rage The poor Truth returns to the well & disappears forever, hiding therein, its shame. 7 Acts of Self-Love that Build Self-Esteem Building Self Esteem is something you do everyday... 1. Keep a journal: record how beautifully u lived this life. Include the drama, the places where u weren't your best self, the amazing things uv accomplished or managed to survive, celebrate every miracle no matter how small a little each day 2. Tell people how u feel...not for them, for u. When u tell folks how you feel and they do their best to honor it, that act builds self esteem. Ur convincing urself that u have the power to change ur life. Give people the chance to care for u by honoring ur feelings. U deserve it. It's powerful self-esteem magic 3. Tell people how u feel as a way to set a boundary. That when ur feeling good about your interactions w/them, ull stick around for more goodness, when ur not, u will leave. And then leave each time. The peace it will give u is more proof positive that u have the power to change ur life. Another self-esteem building action that changes ur life. 4. Until further notice, celebrate everything. Create physical proof of ur celebration. A card, a beautiful journal, a photo of something you're grateful for in ur journal, frame a photo that symbolizes the moment & create a gallery of moments when u stood up for ur best self speaking truth to power. 5. Expect ur feelings to be honored & don't take it personally when they are not. Simply move to a place where they are. Create room for people to show up for u by focusing on those who do & not those who don't. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER. 6. Surround urself w/people who support the way u feel. That includes work, home, friendships, social situations. The biggest sources of stress & self-esteem shredding are work & family that u feel u have to deal with. What if u didn't? I’ve found the greatest step towards changing the power dynamics in your is to begin writing down your story every day: what you believe, what you’ve done, what you dream about, what you’re afraid, proud & joyful about everyday. It allows you to make a record of your journey. To see what you’ve changed of grown out of...it makes the idea that you are fully responsible and able to change the fabric of your life by laying out the peices in a daily chronicle. Every great journey I’ve ever taken began as a story in my morning pages. It’s where I learned to grow. I'm a big Spidey fan. I like all the classic comic book heroes for that matter. Well, I'm not much of a DC fan, but lots of others. I grew up reading Marvel comics; loved X-Men, Thor and a few others, but Spiderman was my favorite. It wasn't because I wanted to swing from building to building or even save people from bad guys. It's because Peter Parker was a high school nerd that had something happen that gave him super powers. He had some freak accident that changed him into a hero. I waited for that freak accident type of thing to happen to me so I could be something great. Well into my adulthood. I made the mistake of thinking "some day" it'll happen, and I'll have this super power and become more than a nerdy high school kid. That's the mistake a lot of us make. We think some day this and this will happen and I'll change miraculously overnight into something else. It comes out like "I'll do that when I'm rich" or "as soon as this is over, I'll...". We keep waiting to hit the lottery or some other life changing event to get what we want. It puts our goals in terms of time, rather than the results of actions we take. It keeps our brain future focused. The problem there is the brain doesn't understand tense. It's always processing in terms of now. It keeps the goal as always out in the future and it doesn't get done. Here's the thing about all those heroes I wanted to be like growing up, every last one of them used their talents and training. Yeah they had super powers, but it wasn't until they decided to use those powers to fight bad guys or defend their planets or whatever. At some point, they had to make the decision, and start doing the thing. Daughters of Destiny, a gorgeous documentary abt the founding of Shanti Bhavan...a school in India that changes the lives of young India girls...it left me inspired & fearless... what we do matters, do we continue to do what clearly no longer works or do we prepare ourselves for a new path. In response to the emotional crisis we’re in, I found a way to restructure my coaching and make certain classes a lot less expensive than usual during this tricky time. I feel like the place my work creates for people to reinvent themselves and redefine their work lives to align more with their divine gifts & purpose is actually really useful right now. So, I’ll take the financial hit bec I get to do something that’s in line with my divine purpose: to use my gift of teaching and seeing to help people figure how to rewrite their stories into ones that feel like their Soul’s Song. So it’s a win, win... Will I be able to keep my business afloat? Sure, in a different configuration, one that serves us. The earth is trying to teach us a lesson about learning how to transform the way we live, question what we value and pay attention to the effect our actions have on others and our resources. Changing my business model to serve that lesson is the entire point of my business. My work and I don’t exist to just make money and get over. My work is about transforming my gifts into service that leaves this place better than I found it...It’s why I get up after a night of tears, bad dreams and worry. What if this were a time to write down your story. What if you story were just how amazing the sun felt on your face this morning? Or what are doing now that feels good that you actually have the time to do? What if your story was how beautiful it was to do nothing or spend hours talking to someone you never had time for in the past. Or go through your photos and finally finish organizing them inscrap books or dreamboards. Things you’ve done, places you’ve been are stories of the life you’re living. What you did, became, dared are the pieces of your story that you now have time to reflect on and see how much you’ve grown, accomplished and how much more there is to do. Being busy or entertained can often be used as a drug to make us forget the most important things like why we’re here and how we’re leaving this place better than we found it...don’t miss the moment focusing on worries you have no control over...seize how you can grow, explore and fall in love with this new life in the most important moment of your life: NOW.
