I’m all about local food, but I will never buy “kimchi” from these folks. From their website: “You Betcha Kimchi was started by Iman Mefleh and Joe Silberschmidt, two aspiring farmers, in the fall of 2013. The vision was to make a tasty Minnesota take on kimchi using all local vegetables. We began by chopping cabbage in the laughably little kitchen of our apartment and raising the eyebrows of our neighbors with kimchi’s formidable aroma during its fermentation.” What the fuck is “formidable” about the way kimchi smells? Or do you just mean that it’s too strong for your delicate white palate? Why do white people love making fun of our food even as they appropriate it?

Vegan "activism"

Activism isn’t instagramming cute photos of smoothie bowls and vegan products with #govegan

Activism isn’t showing off photos of your fit body or weight loss as evidence that veganism will give you a conventionally hot body.

Activism isn’t telling poor or otherwise disenfranchised people that veganism is actually the cheapest and easiest and kindest way to eat.

Activism isn’t being single issue at the expense of every other movement for equality.

Activism is volunteering at a community garden to help make healthy local fruits and vegetables more accessible for everyone. Activism is donating your time money or other resources to make accessible veganism a reality. Activism is taking it upon yourself to educate yourself on and support other movements. Activism is interrogating yourself constantly about what biases prejudices and privileges you carry. Activism is so much more than constructing a narrative and images of a healthy pure perfect vegan lifestyle online & writing #govegan #fortheanimals.

So I’m just wondering, do you actually value those lives or have you just pulled a Hilary Clinton with gay marriage jumped on a bandwagon? 

every time an american drone flies over people in Pakistan, Yemen or Afghanistan, obliterates buildings, schools, families, homes - is there a change of flag? Do you even value those lives? 

every time an unarmed African American is shot dead in cold blood - which seems to happen every single day, do tumblr @staff make their official stance ‘BLACK LIVES MATTER’, ‘Hands Up Don’t Shoot’ or ‘I Can’t breathe’. Or do those lives not matter?

every time a Palestinian mother is dehumanised, made to give birth at a checkpoint, every time a Palestinian child is robbed of his father, every time Palestinians have to struggle day to day to survive in the Gaza: the worlds largest prison, there is no change of flag. Do you not value those lives? 

every time people in Yarmouk - once described by Ban Ki Moon - as the ‘deepest circle of hell’ - die of cold or starve to death, NOTHING HAPPENS. no one says anything. ever. People forget that place even exists. I don’t see tumblr @staff change their logo.  Why do you not value those lives?

every time the Rohingya people of burma are persecuted, chased from their homes and slaughtered, nothing happens. Why do their lives not matter?

I could go on forever. 

None of this is to say that the attacks that occurred in Paris were not atrocious, unjustifiable and full of hated. But Mexico also suffered yesterday, Japan suffered, Baghdad suffered, Beirut suffered, places all over the world suffer unfathomable things everyday. Yes, Paris suffered and no one can rightfully condone those acts of horror, but why has it become so commonplace that some lives are simply valued more than others? 

Why is it so commonplace that we mourn the death of some people so loudly, but we mourn others with a faint, indistinguishable whisper?

Why is the concept of innocent people dying more abhorrent when it happens to countries in the northern hemisphere, or the West?

What is the unit with which we measure the degree to which others should be afforded their humanity? How can this unit even exist?

I don’t see all the major cities of the world project flags of any of the other countries that were affected or afflicted yesterday. 

Please someone tell me, why does this keep happening? 

Why are we allowed to pretend that an act of terror perpetrated against the West is worse than the acts of terror that the West carry out in the rest of the world everyday?

I don’t want queer and trans folks serving openly in the military. I don’t want women subjected to the draft. I don’t want women receiving equally harsh prison sentences to men. These things may fit some minimal definition of “equality” but they’re not liberation and they’re not progress.

I want the dissolution of standing armies and an end to the economic hardships that force many to pursue military careers who wouldn’t if they had better options. I want an end to the nationalistic jingoism that promotes military ‘service’ as some high moral calling. I want an end to the aggressive imperialism that costs millions of innocent lives in the name of economic priorities. I want the abolition of the prison system and punitive legal systems.

I don’t want folks equally subjected to these harmful systems, I want the systems torn down so no one is subjected to them.

You know what’s a major pet peeve for me when it comes to arguments against raising the minimum wage? All the references to food service workers as “burger flippers”. Burger flippers are not a thing. You’re never going to see a restaurant post a sign that says “help wanted: hiring burger flippers.” “Burger flipper” is a term used pretty much exclusively to condescend to food service workers and downplay the real work and stress that goes into food service. It makes out like minimum wage workers are lazy people who are literally just standing at a grill, occasionally moving a spatula, all day, mindlessly, and that is their one and only responsibility, which anyone who has ever worked in food service can tell you is not what that job entails. It’s rhetoric used solely to designate them inferior. It doesn’t reflect the reality of minimum wage food service work. It’s annoying.

to put this in perspective, my job consists of:

prepping hundreds of pounds of vegetables alone per week, using knives, a heavy-duty meat slicer, and a vegetable chopper, any of which could easily take off a finger from a careless move

constantly refilling vegetables, cheeses, sauces, and non-perishables (cups, salad bowls, ecc)

cooking on a 200°-400° F grill for anywhere from 2-6 hours per day, often intentionally putting hot oil on it upon customer request

ensuring meat is not over or undercooked as to prevent food poisoning

quality control of every single topping on the line (freshness, consistency, overall taste and appearance), as well as making sure to regularly change gloves

being conscious and accommodating of any allergies or dietary restrictions

talking to a wide variety of customers each day, with a mandated Cheerful Smile, regardless of any events in my personal life or how they treat me

having to explain prices and menu options as well as toe the company line by upselling certain deals to every single person

and above all making sure all dishes and the entire rest of the store is clean and sanitary, as well as making it neat and orderly for customers.

every one of my coworkers does all of this every single day. every day my coworkers and i plunge our hands into scalding water to ensure dishes are properly sanitized, every day we take blades within an inch of our hands so that people have an enjoyable variety of food to eat. it is not uncommon to leave a shift at work with a second-degree burn at the very least.

what do i personally earn for this? $7.50 an hour, and that was after a 25 cent raise. this is an emotionally and physically taxing job. this job is non-stop customer service with concern for public health hanging over every move i make. what about this sounds easy? what about this sounds desirable for such a pittance? if i cared a little less about my job, hundreds of people could get sick in a single day if i served onions i dropped on the floor, or meat i undercooked, or if i sneezed and didnt take the time to wash my hands and change my gloves.

but sure. i guess i just flip burgers.
