Thank you for providing inspiring puppet building videos. Will there be more?
Eventually , I've been busy on several other projects
one of my recent projects with College humor,
Ever Wonder What it's Like to be Morgan Freeman?
How we imagine Morgan Freeman spends his lunch break on a movie set.
Hello! I just wanted to say, I love your puppets! I enjoy experimenting with puppet making at home, and I have two specific questions. the first question is, do you have a good glue you use for gluing foam? So far everything I've tried is either too stiff, melts the foam, or doesn't stick. The second question I have is also glue related. I made a rod puppet recently and for the life of me I can't get the hand (painted Sculpey) to stick to the rod (coat hanger). Do you have any suggestions?
hello Nerdchild,
glad you like my work, , the glue i use (as well as most puppet builders) for foam rubber is a contact cement called barge, its rather toxic and should only be used in a well ventilated situation,
as for sculpey , i think you need to bake the rod into the hand , i don't have much experience working with that material though.
This Weekend @puppetworks ! Punch & Judy introduce The 3 Wishes The Ugly Duckling The 3 Little Pigs all 3 plays at each showing adapted for Hand Puppets by Nicolas Coppola (suggested for ages 3 and up) *June 16-17, July 21-22, August 25-26, 2012
THE MAGIC FISH , Built for the Puppetworks Theatre Production of "THE THREE WISHES" this is a Hand puppet show, that will be performed through out the year , in addition to the regular Marrionette shows, The Three wishes opnes this comming weekend, (JUNE 16-18 2012) @ Puppetworks.org
Custom Built Portrait puppet .
Not every puppet i build is for a video, or Theatre project. My most recent client wanted something totally original , she had been inspired by a gift she saw at a recent birthday party for a friend and decided she wanted to do something simliar , after contacting a few other puppet builders, she an i came to a agreement and work began on this puppet. Caricaturesand portrait puppets are difficult, your walking a fine line, trying to strike the right balance between the real person, the caricatue, and the style , you dont want to insult the person, but you need to find enough visual cues so that everyone knows who the puppet is supposed to be, Happy to report that all involved were thrilled with the end result, Nothing better than a happy and satisfied client . especially when they take the time to sned you a note after the event!
"FANTASTIC !!! Your Miss Stacy Puppet was a HUGE SUCCESS !!!!
Everyone loved it !!! She is going to bring it into the office so it will get
a lot of traffic.
You did a superb job, James! You honored the commitment in
every way."
owl puppet
the final owl, Added Eye lids as per client request . this guy is for a show being produced by David Manley , http://upinarms.biz/Home.html
Here's the EL-P video for "Full Retarded" not really my cup of tea music wise , but I think I managed to get a lot out of the puppet.. Very happy with some of the "stunts". But sitting under the steering wheel in that convertible was rough
Rapper "EL-P" and the squirrel puppet I performed with , a still from the music video I worked on, click the link to read a blog post about the album release ..
Pretty much done, still need to attach the neck tube, and make arm rods.. But here's the Owl.
Puppet owl for a client .. The "feather" look here is achieved by the use of this high quality fur , and layering strips of fur cut with the feather shape on the body , very effective I think.
How do you get past the "first project hump"? I built a set of puppets for the first time (Avenue Q puppets), but I don't have enough experience to take on or find any other projects. How did you gain enough experience/knowledge to be hired by the big guys?
The only way to get experience is to do the work , whether you have a project or not , cartoonists and comic book illustrators draw and draw and draw, sculptors ,sculpt, if you want to build puppets you need to build , design your own puppets, and practice , there is no easy way , you have to work at it everyday .
Meet the Kazoos ,
Ministry of puppets is a fun Uk site, who makes puppet videos, ALex bought a couple of my First "A puppet a day puppets on Etsy, and he just made a new video,
These puppets were based on the "BLACK BEARDED PURPLE BLATCH" pattern created by the Jim Henson company back in the sixties for a magazine article, glad to see he is having fun with them while he waits for the other two he purchased (we have had a shipping snafu )

first of all Tumblr, you deleted my description to this post forcing me to re type my rambling nonsense.
secondly ,you all should give this guy some love!,
Charles got the idea to do "a puppet a week" well befoe i even thought about
"a puppet a day" , (honestly i was going to do one a week, Curse you Charles!!)
in his last post he commented that he wish he could be more like me, and while flattering, i think he should be more like him, be the best him he can be!!
we come from two different worlds, and this should be a fun project, hobby, and learning experience for him! he has a "REAL JOB" a family, and several great creative outlets, and no matter how he may stumble on the way to his goal, he shouldn't get down about it, i have wasted more time than i care to think about comparing my self to my more illustrious colleagues, and its pointless
i started my challenge out of boredom, lack of work, and projects with two much material and way to much free time, i have been having fun with it, but on more than a few occasions, the "REAL WORLD" has intruded, interrupting my work flow, and output, I've missed more than a few days , but i think my goal was a bit over reaching anyway, but ill still do as many puppets as i can regardless,
So Charles, don't let the real life stumbling blocks get you down, do your work,do the best work you can, than do better, I've seen you evolving as you go, keep on doing it. and have fun, in the end that's all that matters any way.
