Mental compacity...Unknown

How is the measure of mental compacity calculated? Not by science, but by the universe? Does life hurl a million and one, obstacles at you once to see what's left?

For example, my Mother passed away last year while I was pregnant with my 2nd son. She knew I was pregnant and I wasn't going to tell her. She told me she was sick in April; by Mother's Day, she was in the hospital, then gone by the end of June. This made my first trip to Florida all the more dreadful than I would've thought because I was finally visiting my mother's house after many sessions via Facetime, all to come to an empty house, a void of what used to be a living space for my loving mother. I am coping but from time to time to be honest.

I want to kick the living S&*T out of myself, have an all-out brawl with my emotions, and highly question my mental.
