When the five of you left Giselle’s to head to Sunghoon’s, you didn’t quite realise just how loud the party would be when you entered.

There was probably a student from every year in this house, maybe the entire year group for some. You were certain there were about 100 juniors in the same place at the same time. All except one.

You’d drunk a bit, not too much to pace yourself, but you hadn’t yet seen the man you had maybe came here especially for. You knew he didn’t go to these things usually, but there was always a first for everything right?

You saw the look in his eyes today when you told him you “reaaaally wanted to see him tonight” during your earlier session, he changed his response to a maybe rather than a concrete no. Was this guy just oblivious to your obvious advances? It seemed like it was working.

Your eyes had roamed the bustling living room in hopes of spotting him, but you’d seen his friends in a large group together— even Sunoo was bouncing between his group and your group— and yet, you still didn’t feel satisfied.

Ping!

The ring of your phone took you away from whatever daydream you were having, reminding you that your friends were also in your presence; seemingly having more fun than you.

When you glanced at your lock screen, you didn’t expect the message to be from him.

Hello, YN. Could you tell Sunghoon that I’m running a bit late? I know you guys don’t speak to each other, but he’ll understand what I mean. He isn’t replying to me, thank you.

Wow. So you’re playing messenger tonight, I guess.

You don’t really want to speak to Sunghoon, especially with the sight of all his friends around plus about 15 girls ready to pounce on him in the next minute.

But if it’s for Jay, you’ll do it.

“I’ll be two seconds.” You announce to your friends.

You walk around the living room to the left corner that connects the kitchen, approaching the mildly intimidating group of 5 guys. You don’t include Sunoo in the equation, for obvious reasons. But, he isn’t around now that you take a good look at the men in front of you, making this more nerve wracking than you’d like to admit.

“Sunghoon.” You tap the back of his shoulder.

The way he turns and smirks at your presence has you wanting to punch this guy in the face as soon as possible. You weren’t an idiot, you’d dressed quite nicely for the night— mini skirt with a crop top which showed off just enough skin that everyone would shamelessly take a look. It wasn’t that you liked the attention, you liked the confidence it gave you. But coming from Sunghoon, the registered Fuckboy™, you didn’t find any flattery in his glances, nor his friends who were making their stares blatantly clear.

“YN.” He replies, crossing his arms smugly. “What’s up?”

“Don’t look at me like that, for a start.” You announce, mildly irritated. “Second, Jay messaged me. Something about him being late and that I had to tell you.”

The way his face drops almost makes you laugh.

“Seriously?” He sighs. “I was hoping you came over for something far better than that, but thanks anyway.” Sunghoon looks at you slightly confused. “You two dating or something?”

The words knock your poker face. “What?”

He recognises it, and so do his friends— mutters and quiet laughs follow. “See, you wouldn’t react like that if it was nothing. I’m surprised, didn’t think Jay was capable of having a girlfriend, let alone pulling you.”

“We are NOT dating, and besides what is it to you?” You raise your voice an octave. “You don’t get to talk about me or him like that, so watch your mouth.” You wait a beat, and really look at his face; noting the drain of colour. He looks surprised, as if he didn’t take you for a girl who’d speak to him like that.

“Hey, don’t listen to a word from this guy. He’s just jealous he can’t find any love in all that pussy he’s drowning in.” Someone chips in, and you recognise him to be Heeseung. He pats Sunghoon’s shoulder and gives you a small smile.

You don’t wait for any more talking from them. You just nod, and smile back at Heeseung. Before turning your back to them and making your way back over to your friends.

That’s the first and last time you’ll be doing any favours for Jay, or well, when it comes to his friends.

But still, what did he mean Sunghoon would know what he means? Being late was normal, no?

Drunk tweeting was not something you usually did. But maaaaybe you were too tipsy to even be considered tipsy anymore. You were staring at Jay, staring for the past 10 minutes since you realised he was with his friends. Sober you wouldn’t have dared, and sober you wouldn’t have stood alone in a house without any friends near you either. But now he was coming toward you and you couldn’t bring yourself to take your gaze off him.

You take another swig of your cup, full of some weird concoction created by a random guy in the kitchen. Your survival instincts were probably a minus at this rate.

“YN, hello.” Jay finally speaks, now standing in front of you. “Listen, I’m sorry about what Sunghoon said. He’s just.. an asshole. I made sure he won’t ever do that again.”

You laugh softly. “I meaaan, who cares what he thinks.”

“What?”

“Likeeee, even if people think we’re dating… what’s wrong with that?” You slur, looking into his widened eyes.

“Uh, well. I just think it could be bothersome for you.” He replies, clocking your drunken state.

“Hm..” You pout. “Don’t you mean bothersome for you? It’s annoying.. you just don’t have any idea how I feel.”

“YN, what are you talking about? I think you’re a little too drunk.” He reaches forward to grab your cup.

You pull it far out of his reach. “Isn’t it obvious that I—” You feel something rising in your throat, oh no.

He realises it too, watching as you cover your mouth with your hand and run quickly to the nearest bathroom.

Jay runs after you, catching up to you as you drop to your knees in front of the toilet, spewing out a disgusting mixture of both food and drink consumed in the past hour or so.

You feel him, behind you, holding your hair back in a tight makeshift ponytail because he simply doesn’t know what else he can do.

Jay doesn’t think he’s ever been in such a predicament. Having a girl throwing up god knows what in front of him, in a bathroom, alone with her. And instead of feeling disgusted, he can’t help but feel bad for you? What is wrong with him?

Maybe it was these tutoring sessions getting the better of him. Talking with someone deeply for an hour a week was bound to make you feel caring towards them, right? You guys were friends, he thought, but it had only been two weeks since you guys properly started your sessions.. maybe he was moving too quickly.

You cough and splutter as you back away from the toilet, sitting against the cold tiled wall of the weirdly spacious bathroom as Jay lets go of your hair. He kneels down to your level and looks at you for a second.

“Are you alright?”

You nod, head dropping down a little while you try to keep up your lie. “I’m fiiineee.”

Jay reaches his hand up to brush some hair which fell over your eye behind your ear instead. You look up at him with glassy eyes, he really just doesn’t know how you feel about him.

“No you’re not, you need to go home. I’ll go find Sunoo, okay?”

It’s useless to fight him, he’s maybe one of the most stubborn people you’ve ever met. So, you watch as he slips out the door and slowly but surely, amidst the outside noise, you drift off into a well needed sleep.

Settling at a cozy corner table in the schools library, you place your caramel macchiato on the table as well as your books and slouch in the chair.

Did you arrive 15 minutes in advance? Maybe. Have you spent the past hour freaking out about seeing him in such an intimate setting? Yes.

You knew him to be a person who’s punctual with his arrival times, half expecting to already see him after you scanned your student ID at the entrance of the library. You type a short message, deciding it best to make your own arrival known.

hey. im sitting in one of the group study hubs. you know, the ones with the green and blue chairs!

SENT - 3:02 PM

You facepalm at the embarrassing nature of your wording, the green and blue chairs, you’re certain he would’ve understood exactly where you were sat regardless of that detail.

Minutes later, at sharply 3:10, you see him. Tall and sharply dressed: black button up with some bootcut jeans paired with his trademark black hair and round black glasses. A dark bag slung over his shoulder, where you’re certain the key to your heart can be found at the very depths.

This is not going to go well.

And you were somewhat correct, not on his part however, he was perfectly fine. It was you. The sheer presence of him shocked you to your core, the closeness of the two of you almost shoulder to shoulder felt so new and you felt the rhythm of your heart beating in every crevice of your body. You were certain you’d been blushing this whole time.

Jay paid no mind. And you were glad of that fact, knowing if you were called out then and there you might have to cancel all future sessions due to the strain it’d have on your heart.

It wasn’t until he turned his head to face you that you froze, half looking at him and half at the page.

“You understand this, right?” He plays with the pen in his hand, twisting and spinning it between his fingers without effort. His eyes meet yours, and he seems oblivious to the impact his existence has on you.

“Right, yeah um, you said about uh.. the ambiguity of Hamlet’s madness.. Like, um, for example, the way he acts toward Ophelia.. right?”

He pauses for a second and you notice the furrowing of his eyebrows. “You’re listening to me, aren’t you?” The tone of his voice is authoritative, as if he genuinely is your teacher.

“Of course! Sorry.. just, Shakespeare isn’t really my strong suit.” Totally not distracted by you.

Jay seems uncertain, but he takes a breath before speaking.

“Sorry. I just realised, you’re feeling awkward aren’t you?” Jay looks at you as if he’s finally put together a puzzle in his head.

You open your mouth in protest, but he cuts you off (unintentionally).

“What about a couple of ice breakers? We’ve been studying for the past half hour, we can spend the next while getting to know each other. How does that sound?”

Somehow, this is exactly what you wanted. You’ve spent the past 3 years getting to know him via Twitter posts (very rare) or word of mouth, it’d be nice to finally get a real bit of information from him.

“Okay. I’ll go first.” You manage. “Um, what are your hobbies?”

“Well. I tend to play guitar in my free time.” You note the way his eyes darken a shade. “But, that’s quite rare nowadays. I’m always studying.”

“Oh! Yeah, I remember seeing your guitar on twitt— Uh, I mean that’s like, so cool!”

He laughs softly. A real, genuine laugh.

“Yeah, it’s on my profile isn’t it? Well, do you play any instruments?”

His ability to ignore such an awkward comment from you and turn it into such a nice and calm conversation made your heart skip a beat.

This man was really something special.

The rest of your session consisted of idle chatter, a nice way of getting to know one another. You were surprised, the way he spoke in private was totally different from how he did around campus.

You’d be lying if you said you didn’t like it.
