Drumheller
The one thing I’m starting to miss a lot is on site sketching. Here’s a look at a trip I did in 2008 to Alberta.
(the names are a few famous paleo artists I was hastily writing down during a conversation)
The first exhibit to greet you at the Royal Tyrell is a group of Albertosaurus immersed in a forest setting. Different ages displayed with attitude.
The classic velociraptor, not much bigger than the average dog.
Dunkleosteus - Unfortunately the sea life section was under construction, but this guy was a real pleasure.
An ancient rhino.
The sea reptiles exhibit is one of my favourites, but it’s really hard getting enough light for both drawing and clear photography.
I got about this far on the pachy exhibit outside before it started raining- it was a very wet week for June, but the museum was still really hot inside making drawing for two days straight like some sort of sauna bootcamp. I can’t imagine what peak summer crowds would feel like.
A better look at the hadrosaur.
