itâs a tuesday night, which means youâre knee-deep in flashcards. your third cup of coffee had gone cold hours ago, and your brain feels like itâs actively trying to escape this hell through your ears. finals are a bitch, and youâve got three of them in the next forty-eight hours, which is why your bedroom looks like a research paper threw up all over it: highlighters scattered, sticky notes clinging to every available surface, and your laptop balanced precariously on a mountain of textbooks that youâre pretty sure are just a makeshift stand at this point. youâve been stressingâand studyingâall month now, and yet it somehow still feels like itâs not enough.
youâre wearing his hoodie. the one that smells like him, the cologne you bought him and maybe just a little bit of his natural musk (sweat). itâs big on you, drowning your frame in blue fabric that swallows your hands when you reach for another notecard. you donât even realize youâre doing it, pulling the collar up to your nose and inhaling like heâs right there, like heâs not out there swinging through the city, being a damn hero while youâre here stressing over midterms like any other normal person. you donât know how he does it.
how he balances his normal life with his spiderman life. how heâs still a teenagerâjust like youâjust like every other student in your school, going through the motions of senior year and all. you donât know how he can lead a double life so messy and yet so neat all at once. the kind where heâs in your room, applying to colleges with you with all the hopes and dreams of getting into MIT, but then minutes later heâs getting an alert that a bankâs being robbed and heâs jumping into his suit, ready to be the hero and not the boy with his whole future ahead of him. and yet he somehow manages to ace his tests while simultaneously swinging around the city, beating up villains or whatever.
itâs fine. itâs totally fine. youâre fine. youâve got this. youâre a functional adult who can totally balance a relationship with new yorkâs favorite spider and a course load thatâs actively trying to murder you.
so when you hear the familiar thwip of webs hitting glass, you donât even look up.
âsatoru, if youâre here to distract me, i swear to god i will shove my foot so far up your ass youâll be tasting my toenails for a week.â
which is weird, because normally heâd have a quip ready, something stupid and charming that makes you want to strangle him and kiss him at the same time. you glance up, ready to give him your best death glare, and then your heart stops.
heâs on your fire escape, mask off, blood smeared across his face like war paint, one hand pressed tight against his side, fingers slick and red. his hairâs a mess, white strands plastered to his forehead, damp with sweat with sweat, and his eyes are looking at you with something thatâs trying to be casual but lands somewhere closer to please donât freak out.
âhey, baby,â he says, voice rough, and god, heâs trying to smile. heâs actually trying to smile. âmiss me?â
âsatoru.â your voice comes out strangled, caught somewhere between a gasp and a scream. youâre on your feet before you can think, dropping your flashcards like theyâre on fire, crossing the room in three frantic steps. âwhat the fuckâwhat happenedâare youâoh my god, youâre bleeding everywhereââ
he waves a hand, a gesture thatâs supposed to be dismissive but makes him wince hard enough that his teeth clench. âitâs fine. itâs just a scratch. came to see my favorite girl, thought you might need a break from all thatâall that studyingââ he gestures vaguely at the disaster zone that is your bed, ââand i figured youâd want to see my pretty faceââ
âsatoruâyou⊠youâre not fine,â you hiss, grabbing his arm and yanking him through the window, careful of his wounds. he stumbles, letting out a sharp hiss of breath, and you see the way his hand presses harder against his side, see the blood seeping between his fingers, dark and wet and too much. âoh my god, oh my god, okayâokay, get on the bed, donât move, donâtâshit.â
youâre spiraling, you can feel it, your heart hammering so loud itâs drowning out every rational thought in your head. itâs hard to breathe and youâre trying your best for his sake. heâs bleeding. heâs hurt. heâs hurt and you donât know what to do, youâre just a student, youâre not some miracle worker doctor, you canâtâ
âhey.â his hand catches your wrist, grip warm and bloody and so steady it makes you stop breathing. for a second, your mind calms. only for a second. âhey, look at me. calm down, okay? losing your shit wonât help.â
you do. his eyes are so blue they almost hurt, and even through the pain, even through the blood and the sweat and the obvious effort itâs taking him to stay upright, heâs looking at you like youâre the only thing in the world that matters. and to him, itâs true. to him, you are.
âiâm fine,â he says, and thereâs that smile again, crooked and stupid and so him it makes your chest ache. âjust a little roughed up. you should see the other guy.â
âiâm going to kill you,â you say, and it comes out wet, and you realize youâre crying, which is the last thing you need right now. âyouâre going to bleed out on my bed and iâm going to have to explain to aunt may why her nephew is dead in my apartment and iâm going to fail my finals because iâll be too busy sobbingââ
âokay, first of all, iâm not gonna bleed out,â he interrupts, and even now, even like this, heâs got that smug edge to his voice. âthatâs dramatic. second of all, youâre not gonna fail your finals. youâre like, really smart. itâs annoying, actually. and thirdââ
âshut up,â you snap, but youâre already moving, grabbing the first aid kit from under your sink (youâd bought it after the first time he showed up with a busted rib, because apparently being spider-man means you accumulate a truly concerning number of injuries), and a bowl of warm water. âjustâjust shut up and let me work.â
âyes, maâam.â he settles back against your headboard, letting out a soft groan as he does, and you try not to think about how good he looks even like this. itâs a guilty thought, but itâs true nonetheless. heâs all rumpled and bloody and broken, like some tragic hero from a movie youâd probably cry over. his suitâs torn at the side, a jagged rip thatâs soaked through with blood, and you can see the wound underneath, a deep gash thatâs still sluggishly bleeding, and fuck, okay, you can do this. you can do this. youâre a functional adult.
âokay,â you breathe, kneeling beside him, hands hovering over the wound. âokay. iâm gonnaâi need to clean this. itâs gonna hurt.â
âi can take it,â he says, and you can hear the smirk in his voice, that stupid, insufferable confidence that makes you want to smack him. âiâm your friendly neighborhood spider-man, remember? i can handle a little bit of pain.â
âyou handle pain by showing up at my window looking like a horror movie extra,â you mutter, grabbing a cloth and dabbing it in the water. âstop talking.â
âbut you love when i talk,â he pouts playfully, bottom lip bloody and jutting out.
âi love when you breathe.â you press the cloth to his wound, and he hisses, his whole body tensing, and you see the way his jaw clenches, muscles bulging under his skin. and itâs so unfair, because even like this, even with his face half-covered in blood and his hair sticking to his forehead and his body shaking with pain, heâs so ridiculously hot it makes your brain stutter. like, thatâs not fair. thatâs not allowed. you shouldnât be checking out your boyfriend when heâs actively bleeding out on your bed.
âyouâre staring,â he says, and thereâs a hint of amusement in his voice, a low chuckle that turns into a wince. âenjoying the view?â
âiâm making sure youâre still alive,â you shoot back, but your face is heating, and you know he can see it, knows heâs watching you with those sharp eyes, cataloging every tiny reaction like he always does. âyouâre an idiot.â
âyour idiot, pretty.â
you work in silence for a few minutes and he actually lets you, cleaning the wound with careful, steady hands, and youâre proud of yourself for not shaking, for focusing on the task at hand instead of spiraling into a panic. heâs watching you, you can feel his gaze on your face, and it takes everything in you not to look up, not to meet his eyes and lose your concentration.
âyouâre good at this,â he rasps, soft, almost reverent. âi mean, you could be a doctor or something. if the whole âgetting a degree in whatever it is youâre getting a degree inâ thing doesnât work out.â
âitâs political science,â you say, pressing a little harder than necessary just to hear him yelp. âand iâd rather not spend my life patching up a guy who thinks fighting aliens is a good use of his time.â
âthe avengers think so. and aliens are a threat to humanity.â
âthe avengers and humanity are a threat to my gpa.â
he laughs, and itâs a real laugh, warm and genuine, even as it makes him wince. âgod, i love you.â
you freeze for a second, face flushing slightly.
heâs said it before, plenty of times, casual and easy like itâs nothing, like it doesnât make your heart stop every single time. but something about the way he says it now, bloodied and bruised and looking at you with those pretty blue eyes, makes it feel different. heavier, maybe. like heâs reminding himself, reminding you, that even when everythingâs going to shit, even when heâs half-dead and bleeding out, youâre still what matters.
âyouâre ridiculous,â you manage, but your voice is thick, and you have to blink hard to keep the tears from spilling over. âyouâreâyouâre bleeding and youâre making jokes and i hate you so much.â
âi really, really do.â
you reach for the antiseptic, and he hisses when you apply it, his hand coming up to grip your shoulder, fingers digging in hard enough to bruise. you murmur an apology, working as quickly and gently as you can, and he lets out a shaky breath, his body relaxing slightly as the pain fades from the initial sharp sting.
âokay,â you say, grabbing a roll of bandages. âokay, iâm gonna wrap this. you need toâjust, hold still.â
âiâm always still for you, baby.â
âshut up and be serious for just two seconds, toru,â you whine, sighing and rolling your eyes.
âokay okay, sorry. iâll be a good boy, promise.â
you bite your lip to try and suppress another sigh as you glare up at him then work the bandage around his torso, careful and methodical, and youâre aware of how close you are, how your forehead almost brushes his chest, how his hand is still on your shoulder, thumb tracing small circles on your collarbone. itâs intimate, more intimate than it should be, and you try not to let it get to you, try to focus on the task instead of the way his skin feels under your fingersâso ridiculously soft and warm.
âyouâre blushing,â he says, and you can hear the smirk in his voice. âthatâs so cute.â
âiâm concentrating.â
âsure you are.â his hand moves, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear, and you shiver, your fingers slipping on the bandage. âyou know, for someone whoâs supposed to be patching me up, youâre looking pretty distracted by your patient.â
âsatoru, i swear to god, if you donât stop talkingââ
âyouâll what?â he tilts his head, and even though heâs pale and sweaty and clearly in pain, thereâs that spark in his eye, that infuriating, impossible spark that makes you want to kiss him until he shuts up. âleave me to bleed? abandon me in my time of need?â
âi will suffocate you with a pillow.â
you finish wrapping the bandage, tugging it tight, and he lets out a low groan thatâs definitely not entirely pain. you ignore it. you ignore the way your stomach flips, the way your pulse jumps, because youâre a functional adult with self-control and youâre not going to jump your boyfriend while heâs actively injured.
âokay,â you say, leaning back, wiping your bloodstained hands on your jeans which are definitely going to need one hell of deep clean after this. âthat should hold. for now. but if youâre not better by tomorrow, iâm calling aunt may. and the hospital will no longer be a negotiableâ
âyou wouldnât dare.â
he grins, that stupid, cocky grin that makes you want to scream, and then he reaches out, grabbing your wrist and pulling you toward him. you fall against his chest, careful to avoid his wound, and he wraps his arms around you, tucking your head under his chin.
âyouâre a lifesaver,â he murmurs, pressing a kiss to the top of your head. âliterally. iâd be dead if it wasnât for you.â
âyou wouldnât be dead if you didnât have a death wish,â you mumble into his chest. âseriously, satoru. what happened out there?â
heâs quiet for a moment, and you feel the tension in his body, the way his grip tightens. âsome new guy,â he says, and his voice is lighter than it should be, like heâs trying to brush it off. âthought he could take the spider. he was wrong. obviously.â
âhe had some kind of... i donât know. weird tech. caught me off guard. but i handled it.â
âyouâre literally bleeding all over.â
âi said handled it, not perfected it.â
you laugh, despite everything, and he hums in satisfaction, his hand coming up to stroke your hair. âsee? youâre smiling. thatâs the goal, pretty. keep you smiling.â
âyouâre actually insane.â
âiâm actually charming.â
âthat news guy doesnât call me spider-menace for nothing now, does he.â
you tilt your head up to look at him, and heâs already looking at you, those blue eyes soft and warm, and even with the blood and the bruises and the obvious exhaustion, heâs so beautiful it hurts. you reach up, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek, and he leans into your touch like a cat, his eyes fluttering closed.
âyou need to rest,â you say, and your voice is softer now, gentler. but itâs got convictionâhe can tell you mean it. âno more heroics tonight.â
âcanât promise that.â
âokay, okay.â he holds up his hands, a gesture of surrender. âiâll stay. for you. because you asked so nicely.â
âi did not ask nicely.â
âyou asked with your eyes. same thing.â
you roll your eyes, but you donât move, and he doesnât let go, and for a while, you just stay like that, tangled up in each other, your heart finally slowing to something resembling normal. you can feel his heartbeat under your ear, steady and strong, and you let out a breath you didnât know you were holding this whole time.
âyou know,â he says, and his voice is drowsy now, warm and heavy with exhaustion. âi think this is my favorite part.â
âthis.â he gestures vaguely with his free hand. âthe after. when itâs just us, and youâre taking care of me, and i donât have to be spider-man for a little while. i can just be... satoru. your boyfriend.â
your chest aches, sharp and sweet, and you press a kiss to his chest, right over his heart. âyouâre always mine. even when youâre being an idiot.â
âespecially when iâm being an idiot, i think.â
he laughs softly and you feel it reverberate through your body, a low vibration that settles deep in your bones. âi love you,â he says, and this time itâs not a joke, not a throwaway comment. itâs real and it makes your eyes sting all over again. âi know i say it a lot, but. i mean it. every time. youâre... youâre everything to me. even when iâm bleeding all over your bed and being a mess.â
âyou are a hot mess,â you correct, and he snorts.
âoh, so you do think iâm hot.â
âyou just did. you said hot mess. those were your exact words.â
âtoo late. iâm telling everyone. itâs gonna be all over the news.â
you laugh, and he smiles, and everything feels just okay, for a moment. youâre not thinking about finals, not thinking about how he almost died, not thinking about anything except the warmth of his body and the steady beat of his heart and the way he makes you feel like youâre the only person in the world.
âyou need to sleep,â you say, but you donât move. âreally. you need to rest.â
âmm.â heâs already half-asleep, his eyes heavy, his hand still tangled in your hair. âstay.â
âiâm not going anywhere, satoru. this is my house.â
you roll your eyes and sigh, the corner of your mouth twitching slightly as you fight back a reluctant smile. âpromise, you big baby.â
âyou know, i could get used to this.â
âgetting taken care of.â he presses a kiss to your temple. âby you.â
you smile, pressing closer. âdonât get used to it. iâm not your personal nurse.â
âyouâre my girlfriend. close enough.â
âiâm going to smother you.â
âyou already said that.â
âmm.â heâs asleep, or close to it, his breathing evening out, his grip on you loosening. you watch him for a moment, the rise and fall of his chest, the way his face relaxes in sleep, the blood still smeared across his cheek, and you feel a surge of something fierce and protective and so, so full of love it almost hurts. you donât know what youâd do without him. you couldnât be anyone without him.
you reach up, wiping the blood away with your thumb, and you press a kiss to his forehead.
âi love you too,â you whisper, soft, just for you.
