i was pretty disappointed by the first few chapters of itagaki's new manga taika no risei

i hope the "inner switch" thing gets deconstructed as a misconception by the characters, but for now it seems to be being played pretty straight.

i also didn't like the whole "wanting to mate" aspect of taika's affection for ao. it was such a disturbing panel but seems to get completely brushed off. if it was confronted as a horror thing, i'd be grossed out but still understand the purpose of it. i thought taika's lil speech of why he loves humanity in chapter 3 was a lot more interesting of a motivation than just. wanting to fuck ao. i understand sexuality plays an important part in itagaki's works, and i do like her writing style of diving deeper into things most writers would gloss over, but i'm just not enjoying it

i dunno if i'll keep reading. i did really like ao. her dad's speech was a little expositiony and forcing her character over our heads, definitely a death flag moment, but who knows, maybe that'll get deconstructed too.

Remembering Jack's suicide attempt

Trigger warning: suicide mention

It's been almost 3 years since beastars ended. But I can still only think of how the happiest and most optimistic character tried killing himself.

Like, his best friend, who was his best friend his whole life, suddenly starts to drift away, keep him in the dark, and get a secret life. Legoshi starts worrying jack more and more, until he quits school with no explanation. And the moment he leaves, Jack starts taking the hardest classes in the school and has no time to do anything else.

Losing his best friend, losing his peace, thinking he's drifting away from his other friends, and feeling numb. He thinks his only option is to die in front of the friend he loved the most but broke his heart.

I love them so much and it broke my heart too see that. I hated Legoshi so much for leaving jack with no explanation but I was so glad to see Legoshi saving him.

(I only read the manga in Portuguese so these are the only panels in English I have)
