Among all the fan art submitted to the Detective Conan Illustration Contest in the past few years, this one here is my absolute favorite. It was hand-picked by Aoyama-sensei and won the Grand Prize award in 2023.
"Fall in Love" by Ayaka Sato
Aoyama-sensei's comments on the work:
"Wow, this is just amazing, both the composition and the picture. It's so incredible, I'm amazed. If it's sold as a product, I'd like to buy it (laughs). Yes, it's amazing. It's the best. The picture of Shinichi falling and the way Ran is drawn are both so cool. It's not easy to come up with something like this."
I, too, was amazed by the concept and composition of the art when I first saw it. The idea and overall design are both very unique and creative, and I thought this is exactly ShinRan's love story!
Shinichi fell for Ran at age 4, so he's the first one to "fall". Look at his face, he's definitely enjoyed this love journey! And he's falling on his back, not caring what's behind him at all because all he cares about is Ran, catching her at the right moment.
Ran, on the other hand, was 12 years late to the journey. She's face-down, and her body is in a much more vertical position compared to Shinichi. She looks totally unprepared, and it's like she's on a roller coaster ride or something.
I can totally imagine a sequel to this art that shows Shinichi catching Ran and finally having her in his arms. Too bad it's not sold as a product, otherwise I'd love to buy one as well. lol

♡ ft. love and deepspace men x reader
♡ a/n: had a convo w/ my sister on what role they would have if they were in a historical manhwa bc we’re avid readers of it and this is what we agreed on :3
comments and reblogs are greatly appreciated! (ꈍᴗꈍ)♡
xavier
♡ crown prince — let’s all be honest, we all saw this coming. cause he literally is! he definitely is suited for the throne, yet he always runs away from his responsibilities just to take a nap somewhere in the palace. which most of the time is inside the greenhouse or the garden. don’t get him wrong, he knows how to do the tasks he’s given, exceptionally even. his tutors all agree on that, but they just wished he could at least attend his classes. even if it’s just once a week..
you are often are sent out to go fetch him. he only responds to your calls when he’s hiding up a tree (most likely sleeping on a branch). if you are insistent in making him go attend to his duties he’ll make you his pillow. either your lap, or dragging you down to lay on the grass; if you try to move, he’ll wrap his arm around your waist, leg on top of yours, head on your chest.
zayne
♡ cold duke of the north — basically got this from his standard myth! he rarely attends banquets and he doesn’t even bother trying to host one either. his castle is an area where it’s prone to have snow storms. the king can’t even disagree, zayne has helped during battles and war, not just through fighting but assisting in helping injured knights. when he was on the field, the percent of death lessened, and most often than not, the soldiers made full recovery. the least the king do was grant zayne his wishes.
you can be running away from your family, at this point you would be anywhere but in that suffocating ‘home’. and what better place is there to go to but the place no one would dare to go unless they had a death wish. the duke’s castle. the only way to make it in and out safely is to know where you’re going. and when you reach his home, the first thing you do is strike a deal with him.
rafayel
♡ marquis and ??? — one of the more out going nobles out there, although as a marquis, he’s definitely richer than he should be. not only just a noble, but a famous painter known all across the kingdom. during banquets, if not chatting with guests you can see him in the corner painting the whole scene. as he paints nothing escapes his sight. probably as the head of the mercenary guild identity is kept hidden. information, people, connections, he knows it.
most likely met you injured while on the job. he slides down the wall of the princess’ palace, clutching his arm, cursing under his breath. when you find him, you’re frantic, trying to patch him up; but he immediately grabs your wrist as you’re about to reach for his mask. he can’t have the sheltered princess figuring out his identity can he?
sylus
♡ the ‘tyrant’ emperor — can you blame me? ;-( he’s every (horrible) nobles worst fear. dragons blood runs through his veins. traitors don’t escape him. if his two right hand men find out someone was planning an act of treason? the next day they’ll find themselves in the palace’s dungeon begging to be killed. corrupt nobles try to bring him down trying find dirt to use against him like killing the previous emperor, but their attempts are futile. call him a ‘tyrant’ but his decisions were always right and had reason. even the older citizens who were there for the previous emperor’s reign agree that sylus was better than he could ever be.
when the first time you two met he unsheathed his sword grazing your neck. so definitely not a good start. after your meeting you silently cursed him under your breath when he sent you away. you were unaware of why he acted like such a brute, just like how you were unaware that your parents are one of the corrupt nobles. but after he finds out you’re more than innocent to your parents schemes, he lets out a chuckle.
caleb
♡ knight — grrr!!! your sworn knight since the very beginning of time. his father was your father’s closest knight when he was younger, close friends if you will. his father, old yet still as strong as he once was, retired, to live as is with his beloved wife and now son, caleb.
he first saw you when you were in your cradle giggling up at him, he was young, not much older than 3 years old but he swore he would protect you with his life, just like his father did for yours. when you finally came of age to pick your knight, your eyes only found his. choosing him without hesitation. although the proper ceremony was already upheld in front of a crowd, you re-did it on the balcony of your room with a better sword, the one you’d gift him soon after.
honourable mention..!
6th love interest
♡ head mage of the magic tower — never seen by the public, even rarely from the mages who work in the tower. nobody knows what he looks like, how he acts, there’s rumours flying he uses dark forbidden magic due to the fact the holy temple and the magic tower are always at each other’s throats.
some whispers say they’re in search for someone who can benefit him. why? what for? and most importantly, who?
I just love the sequence here. Ran getting irritated with her dad who's basically refusing to take a job because he's gambling, and then Conan sensing her irritation turning off the TV lol
In a word where the Kuruta massacre never happened, Kurapika would have ventures out to the outside world. He would still be searching for a Doctor for Pairo and that's how he met Leorio. Leorio would heal Pairo, and the three of them would go help others and met the other casts.
PROOF THAT SHINRAN IS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN ROMANCES OF ALL TIME - PART 4
symbolism
disclaimer: gosho's imagery is subtle and therefore often overlooked, so in order to highlight it, i'll be referencing the work of suzanne collins, an author who tends to spell out her metaphors more
sharks
chapter 882-884
how the case begins:
how it progresses:
this isn't gosho's first time exploring the theme of sharks in the manga:
chapter 311
both shinichi and haibara relate to sharks, they're self-admittedly drawn to blood and darkness. but why?
haibara was born into it, she didn't have a choice... and even though she's no longer a part of the black organization, she still carries the past with her.
shinichi on the other hand? he seeks it out. he directly confronts it, because he wants to defeat it. his unfaltering idealism is what pushes him to be a shark.
ran is very idealistic too, which i talk about here. so why doesn't she act like a shark?
"Finnick knows then what Haymitch and I know. About Peeta. Being truly, deep-down better than the rest of us." - Suzanne Collins, Catching Fire Chapter 19
the closest that gosho comes to spelling it out like this, is haibara's line about ran "i'm up against dolphin, one of the most loveable creatures in the ocean"
ran's defined by more than her virtuous nature, she's also unbelievably compassionate and sensitive. that's what makes her a dolphin.
her unmatched kindness is constantly displayed throughout the whole manga.
sometimes it irks shinichi:
chapter 787
sometimes it hurts him:
but most of the time it baffles and touches him:
chapter 258
now i'm going to say something that might be controversial: from what i've gathered, shinichi doesn't just appreciate ran's tender heart... he depends on it.
and i'm not saying that lightly, i'm aware that ran's caring nature affects a lot of dcmk characters - it's the reason why vermouth calls her an angel, why haibara refers to her as a dolphin and sees her as a sister figure, hell, it's the reason why kogoro's able to function most of the time.
but i'd still argue that nobody relies on it the way shinichi does, which brings me to the next symbol i want to analyze:
cherry blossom
flowers can represent a variety of concepts, depending on your source and in what context you use them for your writing. the same rule applies to cherry blossoms.
gosho's used it as symbol for justice in the past:
chapter 687
it's interesting to look at it through that lense, but i don't think that's what the cherry blossom represents for shinichi.
after doing some research, i came to the realization that cherry blossoms are widely believed to symbolize hope and the beginning of spring.
i think that interpretation makes a lot more sense for shinran. especially if we examine their first interaction:
chapter 924
shinichi shows ran his deduction skills to impress her... ironically he ends up impressing everyone but her. shinichi's condescension leads to a full-blown argument:
but then something completely unexpected happens... despite the fact that they don't know each other, despite the fact that shinichi insults ran, despite the fact that ran's completely put off by his arrogance, despite all of that... she offers him a cherry blossom and along with it the kindest smile he's ever seen:
and i just can't help feeling like ran's cherry blossom is symbolically very similar to suzanne's dandelion:
"I found him staring at me from across the school yard. Our eyes met for only a second, then he turned his head away. I dropped my gaze, embarrassed, and that’s when I saw it. The first dandelion of the year. A bell went off in my head. I thought of the hours spent in the woods with my father and I knew how we were going to survive. To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed. And more than once, I have turned in the school hallway and caught his eyes trained on me, only to quickly flit away." - Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games Chapter 3
"What I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that." Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay Chapter 27
and clearly, only ran can give that to shinichi...
let me further elaborate by revisiting the shark analogy:
the most beautiful dolphin in the sea sees a shark like him, calls him out on his bluff and instead of avoiding him, she actually welcomes him. ran shows him genuine affection, despite having so many reasons not to. how could he not fall for her?
for someone like shinichi, a cool shark who's able to recognize other predators in the sea from such a young age, seeing the innocence and warmth of a dolphin is pivotal for him, because it reminds him that there's so much more to life than constantly familiarizing himself with other sharks (in his childhood by reading and later by investigating them)... there's good too.
to summarize... shinichi sees a delicate cherry blossom, a gentle dolphin and holds on to her for dear life. he desperately clings to the promise of hope and spring, he depends on her affection and warmth. he needs ran, because without her winter would never end, he'd never escape to coldness of the sea, he'd freeze.
which explains why
a) he's so protective of her
b) ran's smile serves as a compass for shinichi throughout the whole story - while his mind is busy chasing sharks, shinichi's soul is persistently searching for the same smile that strummed his heartstrings all these years ago. which is why he immediately notices when ran's not okay (even though she's very skilled at concealing her pain) and why he always tries to make her feel better
and that's ultimately why
a) shinichi's keeping his identity a secret
b) he's so focused on getting his old body back
without ran, shinichi wouldn't have a constant inner conflict as conan, without her, he'd lack purpose and as a result, detective conan would be empty and lifeless.
when i first read this chapter, i thought that shinichi was sweet talking ran to avoid her wrath, but rereading the manga made me realize how misguided i was
"it hurts me when you cry" is shinichi admitting something deeply personal, it's him explaining why ran's tears always get a reaction out of him, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the body he's in
chapter 9
ran: is struggling with shinichi's absence
shinichi: starts calling her on the phone as himself
chapter 48
ran: is emotionally overwhelmed after the karaoke bar case, thinking that shinichi is back and avoiding her, waits for him in the cold for three hours
shinichi: comes up with the idea of talking to her as himself by turning off the lights
i love this moment so much, cause he's using both ran's love language (physical touch) and his own (words of affirmation) to ground and reassure her and it works
chapter 95
shinichi: tells ran to stop crying and ignores heiji in the middle of a case to ask her to wait for him
chapter 143
shinichi: checks on ran after using her for his deduction, drops honorifics when he realizes what he's done and defeatedly endures her tears
also shinichi: never involves her in a case to this extent ever again, even 1000 chapters later
chapter 260
shinichi: involuntary flakes on ran during their date and has to face her as conan
also shinichi: forgets he's conan for a sec as he drops the most epic lines in the manga
chapter 334
ran: is heartbroken cause it's valentine's day and shinichi's still gone
shinichi:
puts the jacket on her when she falls alseep,
reaches out to her as himself
and eats her chocolate
just to get her to smile again.
chapter 479-483
ran: supsects conan's real identity again and feels like he's completely out of reach even though he's so close
also ran: stops suspecting him but still expresses feelings of emotional distance to shinichi
shinichi: gets a second phone just for ran
and carries it with him wherever he goes.
chapter 727 (white day)
ran: starts crying because she thinks shinichi didn't get her anything for white day
shinichi: goes out of his way to draw attention to his gift so she stops crying
(LMFAO, he's so extra)
chapter 743-752
ran: feels like her feelings for shinichi are one-sided, is absolutely devasted, runs off crying
shinichi: drops his current case, runs after her
and confesses his love for her, so she never doubts his feelings for her again.
chapter 884
ran: is frustrated by all the misfortune shinichi brings
shinichi:
in conclusion, shinichi only has two weaknesses: aptx 4869 and ran's tears. and the funniest part is that aptx didn't even kill him like it was supposed to. ran's tears on the other hand? i believe they possess great power. enough power to kill shinichi?

A Possible Future Based On Hisoka's Fortune - HxH Predictions
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 105 (Raw)
"A red-eyed customer will visit your store. Half of them is angel, and the other is the god of death. Presumably they are hoping that you will sell the moon's secrets to them. They ought to be especially pleased about that of the frost moon.
On a hot day, with the mediation of the said customer, the two of you, the man of a reversed cross and you, are probably to be left alone together. The false fourth moon will be torn away from the calendar. With this, those that remain will become 6."
I'm gonna put it here to remind us all of Hisoka's real fortune.
We all know how Shalnark ended up dead according to the fortune he received back in Yorknew arc. Now everyone is paying attention at Shizuku's fortune and making predictions. One of the most popular of these theories is how Shizuku will die around merchandise covered in black, which are brought by the Kakin mafia or one of the princes, if I remember correctly.
So now, I shall make my own predictions on what will happen in the future HxH chapters. But this time it will be based on Hisoka's real fortune.
WARNING: IF YOU HAVEN'T READ HUNTER x HUNTER CHAPTERS 349 TO 400, ESPECIALLY 391 TO 400, DO NOT INTERACT OR READ FURTHER.
Keep in mind that this is unedited, and you are bound to read some cringey parts at some point.
First Stanza:
"A red-eyed customer will visit your store. Half of them is angel, and the other is the god of death."
As Hisoka accepted Hinrigh's offer of going to VVIP room at tier 1, he's currently on his way there. The only one there who is described as a "red-eyed customer will visit your store. Half of them is angel, and the other is the god of death" is Kurapika, who is, at present, the bodyguard of 14th Prince Woble and Queen Oito.
At some point, they will meet again. They have to. There is no way that Hisoka will not go to the next banquet nor snoop around and find out what's up in the said tier. He will be there and his encounter with Kurapika for the first time since Yorknew arc is inevitable.
"Presumably they are hoping that you will sell the moon's secrets to them."
With Hisoka's presence in tier 1, Kurapika won't be able to help but wonder what happened to the Phantom Troupe, especially Chrollo, after Kurapika and the main gang left Chrollo, Hisoka and Pakunoda on top of the cliff/mountain (pls my brain isn't cooperating right now, somebody remind me), in the middle of nowhere.
Kurapika will definitely ask Hisoka about the Phantom Troupe. Presently, he wants to know about them and, obviously, he will get curious whether they are in the Black Whale or not. Remember, the Phantom Troupe is also his target, but obviously more secondary as 4th Prince Tserriednich is his first and foremost target as of this arc.
Kurapika will definitely find out that they are onboard the ship, and in all probability, Hisoka will let him know about it. After all, wouldn't Hisoka want to form an alliance again with Kurapika?
"They ought to be especially pleased about that of the frost moon."
I believe Hisoka will reveal something about the frost moon with Kurapika.
As you know, the frost moon refers to #11 of the Phantom Troupe. Back in Yorknew arc, they were referring to Uvogin. But he died. He even got a tombstone-less tomb and a requiem on the night of the underground auction. So, how is frost moon still relevant to this arc?
Well, sucks for you, but the one who replaced Uvogin is none other than this man:
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 377 (Official English Translation)
Illumi Zoldyck.
With the way he is acting at the moment and how he divulged his assassination deal with Hisoka is making him super suspicious. There has been so many theories about him being Hisoka and so on because of how sus he is at the moment.
Though the theory about him being Hisoka has been debunked as of the current available chapters, you cannot deny that this is not merely just a "kill me and my engagement ring to or prenup with you is that you get paid". There's something more going on here.
I predict that he and Hisoka are on cahoots with each other. Surely, Hisoka had a deal with him, but I think it's more of helping him destroy the Spiders from the inside and so Illumi can save Kalluto from Hisoka's murder plan.
If it is true that Hisoka and Illumi are working together because Hisoka asked him to just like in Yorknew and Illumi can save his younger sibling, then Kurapika will be pleased. Because that's less spiders he has to worry with, considering that he also has to get closer to Prince Tserriednich to take back the remaining scarlet eyes, while also helping Queen Oito and Prince Woble survive the succession war.
(At this point, you may take a break. Resume reading once you are ready.)
Second Stanza:
"On a hot day, with the mediation of the said customer, the two of you, the man of a reversed cross and you, are probably to be left alone together. "
I am mostly onboard with the prediction that Kurapika and Hisoka will come up with some sort of agreement regarding the Troupe. Kurapika already has too many things in his plate regarding the succession war with the remaining princes and how he will get close in contact with Prince Tserriednich. It won't come into surprise if Kurapika asks Hisoka for a helping hand or accept Hisoka's offer of his own kind of alliance, which I think he would do just like in Yorknew. But I think this time Hisoka will warn him not to remove Chrollo's nen. xD
Hisoka will perhaps help him take out some of the members. I feel that he will go for Shizuku and/or Bonolenov first. They are currently with Chrollo, so perhaps with Kurapika's help or someone's help, Chrollo can get separated from them, and then he can kill Shizuku and Bonolenov right then and there.
But we can also take into account that the closes Spiders to Hisoka right now are Nobunaga, Phinks, Feitan, and most likely Franklin and Machi. He can go for one of them first, as well. But I really feel like Shizuku and Bonolenov will die and I'll explain why in a short bit.
And of course, the one I'm most excited about is the showdown between Hisoka and Machi. I'm so ready to witness the best tragic romance of all times
Later on, Kurapika will maybe help him get another chance to be alone with Chrollo in return of him getting rid of some of the Troupe members. The ship is on the way to the false Dark Continent right now, so maybe he can set up a place there where Hisoka and Chrollo can face off. And it will be hot on that place on that day.
But it can also be that because of Kurapika, Hisoka and Chrollo will be alone together in the Black Whale ship, whether intentional or not. But how can it be a hot day in a ship, especially later when they can no longer go out of the premises due to the unpredictable travel conditions?
When the whole ship is in chaos and on fire. Now that will be wild, but not impossible.
"The false fourth moon will be torn away from the calendar."
In Yorknew arc, the false fourth moon was Hisoka, the former #4 of the Spiders. His allegiance to the spider was never true and he was willing for the existence of the Spider to perish.
But the one to replace him was Kalluto Zoldyck, the youngest member of the famous Zoldyck family.
As of now, it looks like he is getting along with them, and based on chapter 377 and 380, he has found some sort of comfort with them.
I mean look at Kalluto sitting near Machi, whom I previously analyzed based off of her speech language as someone considerate to kids.
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 377 (Official English Translation)
And how she is reacting when Illumi revealed to Mizai about everyone in the Phantom Troupe onboard the ship.
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 380 (Official English Translation)
Even so, how can Kalluto be a false fourth moon?
Because he is a Zoldyck.
At some point in the current arc, he will have to choose between the Zoldyck family and the Spiders, considering the fact that Illumi is most likely in cahoots with Hisoka, who is trying to kill the Spiders and have a rematch with Chrollo, perhaps.
And he will definitely choose the family. Because before he is a Phantom Troupe member, he is a Zoldyck. Knowing the dynamics of the family and all of that, I think he will have no choice but to choose his own biological family over the one he found some comfort with. Thus, he has always been a false fourth moon, just like Hisoka.
"With this, those that remain will become 6."
Whether this happens before, during, or after the Hisoka and Chrollo being alone together on a hot day, it doesn't matter. I predict that there will be six members of the Phantom Troupe left, including Chrollo.
And you know what's funny, I think the ones who will have to die are Shizuku and Bonolenov, as I stated previously.
Because:
Hunter x Hunter Chapter 397 (Unofficial English Translations)
The ones who will be left will be the original Phantom Troupe members.
Originally, there are nine members. But three of them are already dead: Pakunoda, Uvogin and Shalnark.
When Shizuku and Bonolenov dies, the ones who will be left will be Nobunaga, Phinks, Feitan, Franklin, Machi, and Chrollo.
The original six.
I really think that if this will be the case, then we have a big potential or two when it comes to exploring the dynamics and relationships between the founding members. We have already witnessed the tension and conflict between the founding members when Chrollo was kidnapped by Kurapika back in Yorknew.
So this time it'll be interesting if we see it once again. And it'll be better if six of them are alive, but Chrollo is alone with Hisoka and they are far away from the other five. It'll be another dilemma for them once again. Do you save Chrollo or do you live on and keep the Spider alive?
And it'll be more interesting if the other people's predictions that the Hei-Ly family had something to do with Sarasa's death and the six founding members finds out about this and ends up being face to face with the benefactor.
These two events can tie into the Spiders' backstory a lot with the former possibly igniting or making them recollect the strong bonds that existed back on that day in the forest and the latter resolving the grudge and guilt they have been carrying since childhood.
Also, having the six founding members dying at the same time or together can be melancholic and sorrowful. A tragic and sad ending, but which provided them resolution and catharsis.
And that's about it. I hope you enjoyed reading my predictions. This post has been in my drafts since the day before my birthday last year and I just completed it in one sitting. Finally, I posted something decent after a long time.
Anyways, I'll go to sleep now. It's like 2 or 3 am here right now.
I love everything about this prediction, the moment I heard about Shalnark and Kortopi's death, I immediately thought about the fortunes and how it become true at the end. My theory is, the fortunes itself only delay the inevitable, not cancel the entire event, so it will come true at some point. OR it could also because of Chrollo's actions in breaking Lovely Ghostwriter's rules. Neon herself said that the fortunes is meant to help the fortune receiver, and that it will become accurate when the teller doesn't know the content. But Chrollo not only reads the fortunes content, but he actively discuss the it with the troupe. If the fortune goal is to help the receiver by giving them a chance to avoid their fates, maybe bcs Chrollo broke the rules, he didn't cancel it, just delaying the prediction.
My two cents about the theory:
I don't think Illumi and Hisoka are in cahoots to take down the Phantom Troupe. Illumi seems incapable of acting on a role, especially one as convoluted as double crossing someone. He's painfully awkward and weird, that's kinda his thing.
If the frost moon truly referring to Illumi (not just Uvogin), then maybe the reason Kurapika is pleased bcs it means he can manipulate the situation using Illumi? I mean, the Zoldycks are asassins, it's possible for Kurapika to hire Illumi/Kalluto for something. I don't know what their policy about taking on double jobs, but with the right circumstances, it could probably happened. Or maybe Kurapika will use his connection to Killua to make them do something. For example, he could offer to bring Kalluto to Killua in exchange for Kalluto and Illumi's help. It could be the perfect transition to the next arc too. Say Kurapika and the Zoldycks survived, then their agreement will bring Killua back to the plot to continue his storyline without Gon.
For Kurapika, Neon staying in YorkNew City would be the best way for him to achieve his goal in pursuing the phantom troupe because he needs Nostrade connections, but he disregard all of that because "Her safety comes first and foremost"
Even Neon's father is reluctant to prioritize her safety, but Kurapika does it without any thoughts
