There was no such thing as failure.
The request that had been given to Arick was a simple one. Documents were to be forged, then placed in the proper registries.
The Bladerunner lord had implied a questioning on his ability to lead. Arick had grown used to the implications of his age. After all, how could someone who was barely an adult possibly have any idea on how the world works? The young lord moved the smooth cloth over his blades, clearing them of the remnants from a job well done. They truly had no clue as to the lengths he had already gone to. Noble lines had a legacy to uphold. Some were trained soldiers, or skilled mages. They would not send their children into battle unequipped. Other lines held a grip on the economy, watching their trades and training their artisans. They would not send their sons out to broker trade deals without proper training. The Vanduril line was known as some of the most powerful assassins Quelâthalas had to offer. He would not be standing before a council as the voice of Covenant if they did not believe he was fit.
A small knock came on the door to his rooms. Arick set one of the daggers aside, tucking the other into its sheath as he opened the door.
âLady Kirana is here to see you, my lord.â
Arick gave a nod, motioning for the servant girl to lead the way. Settled in the comfort of his family parlor was a lithe young woman around his age, with platinum blonde locks braided far down her back. Kirana gave the ethereal lord a wide grin, he robes rustling around her as she stood.
âGood evening, Lord Vanduril.â The pair exchanged a polite embrace, Arick taking her hand and placing a kiss upon the back. âSo sorry to keep you waiting.â Kirana muttered.
âAnd a good evening to you, my lady. Itâs no trouble at all.â A single pale brow rose in inquiry. âWhat name are you going by lately?â
âDorâavel,â she answered simply, sliding an open envelope into Arickâs hands.
âThese are your own work?â Sliding the papers out, Arick scanned the documents with extreme scrutiny.
âThat they are. I hope they are to your liking.â A mocking depiction of shock popped onto Kiranaâs face as she spoke. âThe product of a tryst between Lady Flaresong and Emmory Sunrunner? How scandalous!â
Arick gave a vague smile, earning a giggle from the young woman. âExcellent work. Official seal and everything. Shall I assume the âoriginalâ copies of these are inthe registry?â
âJust as you requested, Lord Vanduril.â The grin she wore grew smug. âEverything seems in order then?â
âIndeed.â Arick tucked the papers away, flicking the envelope back into her hands. âI have one more task for you. Lord Bladerunner. Send him a note saying the copies he requested are in order. Make sure they are put in his hands alone.â
âAnything for a Ghost.â The envelope found a home within her satchel, and with a formal goodbye, she was off.
Arickâs task was over. Now the lord of Sunrunner had the tools he needed. There was no room for failure.

The documents didnât come quick enough for the Bladerunner Lord. Every day that passed without word from the Vandurilâs was agony in his chest. He constantly kept an eye on those who faced conscription, the names, and professions of those who were forced to the war front.
It was a knock on the door to the sunroom that he sat in that pulled him from his despairing as he stared out of the large glass windows and towards the sea that sparkled nearby as if no wrong was currently being committed in the world.
Arandael turned his gaze toward the entrance way where a servant stood with a tentative smile.
âMâlord. A lady from the magistry is here to speak with you.â
His jaw clenched for a moment before he plastered his well known polite smile onto his lips and rose to his feet. âSee her in.â
The young woman entered with documents in hand and a smile upon her own mouth.
Their conversation was brief and filled with little bit pleasantries. Altogether, her stay lasted no more than ten minutes and she was barely out the door before Arandael turned to open the envelope the documents were placed into. He read over them, his eyes narrowing faintly before he gave one quick nod.
Sliding the documents back into the safety of the envelope, he turned on his heel to head to his study. He had a letter to write.
Ampyria,
I have something for you that will be of immense interest. Please tell me when you can meet with me. It is extremely pertinent that we speak soon.
I send my best,
Arandael
