Bennu

The Bennu is an ancient Egyptian god associated with the sun, creation and rebirth. It is thought to be closely related to, or served as the inspiration for the ancient Greek Pheonix. Its name is linked to the word “weben” meaning to “rise in brilliance”.

The Bennu is the avian form of the creation deity Atum, “he who came into being by himself” out of the primeval water by way of Ra, the primary solar god. Revered at Heliopolis, “the city of the sun”, it is the living embodiment of just one portion of Ra’s soul.

Also serving as a symbol of expected rebirth, the Bennu is portrayed on the backs of heart-scarab amulets buried with corpses, assuring passage for the dead through the Hall of Two Truths.
