ImagineFx Christmas 2010, ’Storyboard Your Scenes Like A Pro’.
Your goal as a storyboard artist is to convey the emotional content and action of a story.
Practice a shorthand for drawing your characters.
Use perspective to create the illusion of depth.
Draw a perspective grid in every frame to establish camera height.
Orient the figures in space relative to each other to help the sense of depth.
The grid lines don’t need to be perfect, just create the sense that the lines converge at the same vanishing point.
‘Hang’ objects/characters of the same size on your horizon line to create depth (e.g. make the horizon line intersect at everyone’s eyes).
The horizon line determines the height of the camera and the height of the camera can subtly affect the audience’s relationship with the character.
Consistent screen direction can help the audience identify a character by their screen position.Stick to the 180 degree safe zone to help characters stay on the same position on screen relative to each other.
The same rule applies for three characters. Imagine lines connecting the characters and don’t let the camera pass any of these lines.
Use initial establishing shot to establish screen direction (what’s on screen right and what’s on screen left).
