I literally can't stop thinking about how Pacat depicts the effects of trauma through subtext, limited pov, and unreliable narrators. Hell even the narrative structure itself. Nobody's doing it like them. So many characters have traumatic backstories, but we usually find out about it through exposition or vulnerable confessions. What's missing is the actual behaviours people develop as a response to trauma and how it skews their perspective of events in the plot. More often than not, people don't even recognize the trauma and instead internalize/externalize it.

Some might downright deny and suppress it, as we can infer from Will's loving defense for his mom, and lack of disclosure around events pertaining to his past or present feelings. Or Damen's struggle to see his brother as anything but loving despite logical evidence. Then there's Laurent, of course, who picked up so many defenses in order to survive his circumstances. His whole personality is trying to regain control, but at the core he also holds extreme shame and self-blame for his abuse. Their trauma isn't there as a interesting plot point, it shapes them and their actions entirely. AND the audience has to piece that together themselves. Like what the fuck

Ok, so I know we make a lot of jokes about how gay the Trojans are, but after reading tgr… that’s totally on purpose

There’s a reason that Rhemman respects Wymack so much, and it’s that they’re doing the same thing. Where Wymack has made a team that’s a haven for kids who need a second chance, Rhemman has made one that’s a safe space for queer athletes.

Rhemman’s quieter about it, in part because he can be, and in part for the safety of his kids, but it’s the same thing Wymack’s doing. And while he might not be as outspoken about it, he’s absolutely putting out the signals for those who might need to know. Just look at who his captains are. Jeremy, who’s had a lot of attention for being unsubtly gay. And Xavier, a trans man who has transitioned while vice-captain and isn’t trying to hide it.

And if his two captains weren’t a loud enough signal that his team was a safe space, you have the team’s reputation. They’re known for being nice to everyone. Anyone who joins this team knows what standards they’re going to be held to and can guess that bullying won’t be tolerated within the team. More than that, the team’s reputation doesn’t just mean safety at home, it also acts as a shield for its players. It’s well established that almost no one beefs with the Trojans and going after one of their players is a taboo. (Yes Jean is the exception here, but the more entrenched in the team he gets the more it’ll be true for him too).

Rhemman has gone out of his way to make a space as safe as possible for queer athletes. And for those who need it, he’ll show them it’s possible to live a happy fulfilled life by modeling it for them. Rhemman and Wymack are two sides of the same coin.

where do we think kevin is gonna fall on the spectrum of reliable narrators in aftg

because so far it looks something like this

one one end we have jean, who’s lawful good unreliable—he’s not actively trying to hide anything, he’s just so traumatized his frame of reference is skewed to shit and the only person he’s lying to is himself really

then in the middle we have chaotic neutral unreliable narrator neil josten. he’s also not actively deceiving us, he just has the worst priorities known to man—anything he doesn’t deem important (anything that’s not exy or andrew) he doesn’t bother telling us. like we still don’t know what his mother looked like but god forbid we go 2 chapters without mentioning the solid stable breadth of andrew’s shoulders

and lastly in the jail corner we have jeremy knox, big fat liar extraordinaire. every time he thinks something vaguely concerning he just points dramatically in the other direction and flees towards the closest excuse possible
