5 Snacks You and Your Dog Can Share
While it's good not to feed your dog tons of "people food," you can share some healthy snacks with your dog. Believe it or not, but there are some foods that are healthy for both people and dogs!
This is a favorite snack in our house. The protein and natural sugars in peanut butter and the fiber and vitamins (both A and C) in apples are good for both of you. Don't let your dogs eat lots of apple cores, though, because the seeds contain small amounts of cyanide!
2. oatmeal
Just like in people, the soluble fiber in oatmeal can help dogs have regular bowel movements. Just remember to cook it and don't put any sugar or flavoring in your dog's oatmeal. You can add a little parsley to keep your dog's breath fresh too!
3. trail mix
Trail mix has some great things in it for people and dogs, but you do need to be careful about what's in your mix. Ingredients that are safe for dogs include: almonds, peanuts, most other nuts, yogurt chips, dried bananas, and dried apples. Avoid raisins, macadamia nuts, and obviously chocolate.
I don't know about you, but sometimes a hardboiled egg is the perfect easy breakfast. You can also feed plain cooked eggs to your dog so that they get the same benefits you do, like easily digestible protein.
Most of the ingredients in smoothies are great for dogs, so if you make your own at home, you can totally share it with your canine family! Here's our favorite dog-friendly smoothie recipe: yogurt, honey, bananas, strawberries.
The key to sharing food with your dog is to remember not to salt or flavor the food you give to them, as too much salt can be bad for them, and flavorings like onion and garlic powder can also be toxic. With this in mind, share your healthful snacks with your dogs with confidence!
