Since I am in the business side of the architecture industry, why not write about it. This side has always been the unknown for new architects and architects-to-be. There have always been the design, production, construction, and project management scopes but what is new to many of us is the design management scope. This blogaseries will let you peek inside the design management world.

Top 5 things to do before you start the design of your thesis

5. Impact Assessment. View your thesis focus in the social fabric and structure of your host site and vicinity. Assess the immediate impact. Visualize your buildings. Analyze and list down the problems and the corresponding solutions.

4. Establish the process. Establish your design process and conceptualization method. Don't try to be too original or too copycat, inspire yourself and evolve what you have seen and absorbed.

3. Travel. If you can travel outside of the country, better. Don't worry if you can't, there is a lot of rising developments in the country. Immerse and experience architecture right before your eyes.

2. OJT. Take your On the Job Training right before the thesis semester. You will learn a lot from the views of the AEC industry.

1. Read. Read a lot of design magazines, blogs, and websites. Read books authored by world-renowned architects.

12 Tips on (re)writing your thesis

These tips are from my handy book - The Elements of Style the 4th edition (2000) by Strunk W., edited by White, E.

1. Place yourself in the background. Refer to yourself in third person.

2. Work from a suitable design. Be consistent with your sentence structure. Using different words that mean the same you were trying to explain will just confuse the reader.

3. Write with nouns and verbs. Adjectives are reserved for description.

4. Revise and Rewrite.

5. Do not overwrite or overstate.

6. Use orthodox spelling.

7. Avoid use of qualifiers. i.e.: rather, little, very, pretty

8. Do not construct awkward adverbs.

9. Make sure the reader knows who is speaking. Quote your sources.

10. Do not inject opinion. Make conclusions based from your propositions.

11. Do not take shortcuts at cost of clarity.

12. Avoid fancy words and be clear.
