Performed Gender in American Politics

Women in American politics are vetted through a means completely foreign to men: it's a question of femininity and masculinity, as well as a search for the perfect balance between the two within candidates. When women in politics are found to be "too masculine," they are demonized for speaking in ways they know to be effective for their male counterparts, or ridiculed for dressing in pantsuits -- a completely professional and appropriate attire for political candidates. When they are "too feminine," they are deemed unqualified for high positioned roles like presidency and generally treated disrespectfully, such as being spoken over and cut off in interviews.
