Appreciation post for how Thomas Harris wrote Clarice Starling character. Most male writers, even the best ones, couldn't create a realistic female character to save their lives. It's always a femme fatale, a submissive and shy girl, or a strong independent woman who acts like a robot, no human feelings at all. But Thomas Harris did such a good work with Clarice. She's strong, independent, smart, determined, and ambitious. She struggles hard to prove herself in a masculine, hostile field, but she is not less empathetic because of it. She experiences fear, shame and anger. She commits mistakes, she is not perfect. She is realistic because she is human, and that's the beauty in her character

not enough people give barney enough attention as a character. a black man in medicine who stayed alive in the presence of a serial killer only because he was civil while also being the person who sells memorabilia of that same serial killer to make money?? saves pigeons bodies so its partner doesnt get run over??? im fascinated he deserves so mucb more attwntion and analysis

i think the funniest part of reading the hannibal books and comparing them to the movies is the differences between clarice starling, like book clarice would gladly tell someone to kill themself but movie clarice would NEVER and i think that’s hilarious

No one talks about the Southern Woman's Representation in Silence of The Lambs.

Clarice is also great, but I'm talking about Cathrine Martin. I have never related to a character more. Some examples, but I'm probably missing some:

Good taste in music

Owns a cat

Nice to strangers

wants her mommy

Curses the fuck out of a man putting her through hell

Steals his dog

Cusses at cops- "DON'T YOU LEAVE ME HERE YOU FUCKIN' BITCH" - She gets shit for this line, but girl me too. you couldn't toss a ladder down? - Listen I understand Clarice too, but if I was in the hole relying on a 5'2 tiny brunette to take down the 6'1 dude on his own turf, in the dark, I'd be hollerin' too. BITCH YOU'RE GONNA DIE GET ME OUT OF HERE.
