After I got accepted into the Hermes program, I was in America more and more for training. The monkeys said “dad, we want a dog!” I said “no,” because they are young and I knew they would not help their mother care for the dog like they should. But then they said “oh, but you are gone all the time, we need a dog to protect the house. We need a dog because we miss you.” I am thinking, they are just saying this to get their way, but eventually they win. I think we will get a dog that is big, protective - A german shepherd, perhaps.
No. They pick a cocker spaniel. Small, very furry, sheds everywhere in the house, barks all night long. Named him Bud. I thought it is good that I am going to Mars, because Bud and I do not like each other at all.
But… Bud grew on me. He is very cute, when he wants you to play with him, and even though he is small he defends the monkeys very well. He always knows when you are upset, and comes to cheer you up. I have even missed him while we have been away. I’ll be happy to see him when we get home.

We would not have to colonize Mars if we could handle taking care of Earth
If we ever put a colony on Mars it’ll be made of asshole planet-killing oil felchers, and I’m gonna be fired for saying that.

Can we? Technically yes. Bowing the VAL was an extreme example, and we have what we need for (extremely controlled, tiny) explosions if need be for a certain few experiments. For example, some of the deeper geologic sampling on Mars was going to use techniques that are technically explosive.
Should we? Probably not. It’s extremely dangerous. We did drill extensively on safety and technique for the few times we expected to need to.

Clearly you missed the point of my last lesson. Life is a harsher teacher than me, so you should probably listen.
Are you religious? If so, where does religion come into what happened on your mission?
As a scientist, you’re always caught in the middle of this debate. When you can find a material explanation for anything, it’s quite easy to get jaded, and say ‘well, the material must be the only thing.’ But on the other hand, science is rife with discoveries that are just a little too improbable.
But religion is never really settled by arguments like that - people are religious from personal experiences. And after every impossible circumstance Mark and us have survived, it really makes me wonder. Although, you might also say that no God would have put us in these circumstances in the first place, so that argument cuts either way.
That’s the trouble with religion; if it were easy, we wouldn’t have been arguing about it for the better part of ten thousand years.
