How do people go about choosing their med schools? Does this affect where they match for their internship/residency? (This is asking for writing advice fyi)

So, I just want to give the caveat that I applied for medical school around a decade ago. I know the process is a little different than it used to be, but I can at least speak to some general trends and overviews of the med school to residency pipeline.

Med school applications start in the fall, about one year before students intend to enroll. Med school admission is difficult in the US - there are far more applicants than spots. Factors that go into whether or not a college student/graduate (if you took time between undergrad and med school, which about 50% of students do) will get accepted include college grades, MCAT score (standardized test for med school admission), research and publications, volunteer work, extracurriculars, medical experience/shadowing, leadership experience, letters of rec, and probably some other small elements I'm forgetting.

Applicants will chose which med schools to apply to based on a variety of factors as well. In general, the stronger an applicant you are, the fewer schools you need to apply to and the more prestigious schools you can consider. You aren't probably going to get into Havard Medical School with a 3.4 GPA, no matter how strong your research and volunteer experience is, but you might be able to get into your state university's medical school. Some other factors might be geographic location, tuition cost, desired specialty strength at a given school, etc. Medical school admission is rolling, meaning procrastinators face more of an uphill battle and people can find out about acceptances anytime in the winter or spring. It is time consuming, with basically every school having it's own supplemental app. It is also expensive, with having to pay application fees to every school you apply to as well as having to travel to schools to interview if you pass the first round of rejections.

Your medical school can impact where you end up for residency. A more prestigious school will look more impressive on your residency application. Other factors include med school grades, though more and more schools are moving to pass/fail for the first two years, your letters of rec, perceived commitment to the specialty you are pursuing, research and extracurriculars. Previously, Step 1 scores (a standardized test that med students take after their preclinical courses before starting clinical rotations) were the number one biggest factor in residency acceptance. However, Step 1 recently moved to a pass/fail test, which will likely mean that the prestige factor of what medical school you attended impacts residency match more than it did previously.

I know this is probably still a confusing mess, but hopefully this provides some guidance. Good luck with your writing, anon!

The Oscars really just changed up the order of awards in anticipation of a posthumous Best Actor award for Chadwick Boseman only for it to go to Anthony Hopkins in an upset. A man who wasn't even there, so the Academy had to accept on his behalf.

So many amazing women represented here whose stories mean so much to me, and a couple I’m going to have to read up on!

If anyone isn’t familiar with Rosalind Franklin, I would encourage you to read up on her story. To this day, it makes me teary-eyed, thinking about all the ways that she was screwed over, all because she was a sort of blunt, not very social woman. Her biggest sin was that she just wanted to do her job (which she was highly competent at) and didn’t shy away from owning her skill level. Contrast that with James Watson, who was a notorious asshole in so many ways, but was welcomed by most with open arms because it’s enough for a man to be brilliant. Rosalind Franklin is proof that women have to be brilliant and likable.

She died because of her work. And the coworker who showed her work to Watson and Crick without her permission or knowledge shares the Nobel Prize with them.

I’m a little late, I hope you haven’t answered any of these: 1, 4, 5, 19 ❤️❤️

1) if you could hit any character without repercussions, who would it be?

In the Choices fandom, I said Clint Convington because I’m supposed to find him likeable and charming, but instead I was forced to watch as my MC was essentially dating a man I could not stand, hahaha! In general the designated villains of the story are so over the top, that I stop seeing them as human, so my desire to inflict pain is minimal. However, I will make an exception for the aunt in ROE. She tries to murder her niece and her niece’s fiance with no repercussions, and she and MC are on good terms by the end. Not on my watch!

4) are you likely to blush when a sex scene comes up or can you read/watch it with a straight face? 

I think I am able to keep a straight face pretty easily. I have good practice not showing a reaction to things because I have to stay neutral when teenagers confess to me things about their health (or when parents tell me crazy stories), so I have a pretty good ability to keep my expression steady. I’ve also played diamond scenes in the lounge on night shifts, and none of my friends were aware anything was up, as far as I know, hahaha!

5) what is your favorite overused trope? 

When two characters bicker like an old married couple before they are even dating, so you know those two will end up together. I’m also a total sucker for mutual pining.

19) if you could be a part of any story, which story would you want to tag along in? 

Hmmm, I think we’ll go with Red Carpet Diaries. This is a universe where a 20-something from the Midwest lands a massive prestige movie role within a month of moving out to Hollywood. I think I would be able to get hired as a video editor/director really quickly in this universe, and that’s been my very unrealistic dream job for a while. Plus, I would have a shot at Seth Levine, and since he’s the closest PB has come to writing my real life type... 😉

Oscars 2020 Quick Thoughts

So pleased that Parasite won Best Director and Best Picture. It’s a phenomenal film, easily my favorite of the past year. Otherwise most categories went as expected. J Lo was absolutely robbed by not even being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Hustlers, as I think her performance was more impressive than Laura Dern’s. Really liked all the live action shorts this year, so check them out if you get the chance.
