Encino —- Los Angeles, California —March 11th, 1975
You sat at your desk staring a hole into the same worksheet your tutor had given you earlier that day. It was torture, you had been sentenced to staying in the house in order to complete all your work. Your dad had an upcoming work trip in Chicago, and he thought it’d be best if you relaxed during that duration.
You could feel how fried your brain had become compared to earlier in the week. So much that you thought your mind was playing tricks on you when you kept hearing the same thumping noise against your window.
You looked at the ticking clock on your wall before cutting your eyes back at the curtain covered window. You stood ground until you heard three thumps at once.
“What the….” You muttered.
Walking to the window you drew the curtains back. It was hard to see, especially since your silhouette was reflecting onto the window. You smacked your teeth and began to fully open the window. Sticking your head out the window, you finally see your boyfriend hopping up and down waving his hands in the air to get your attention.
You giggled to yourself, he’s so silly.
“Marlon!” You whisper shouted.
You softly shut the window before rushing out of your room. You immediately calmed yourself down, seeing the dark upstairs halls and remembering it was late. You took soft and slow steps as you navigated downstairs. Reaching your back patio door, you opened the glass door where Marlon had been waiting. You could barely contain your excitement; you slowly slid the door open, leaving a big enough space for you to slip through.
“Marlon!” you whispered shouted again as you slid the door back shut.
“Hey mama! What’s happening?” He said embracing you. His question coming off too casual like it wasn’t almost the middle of the night.
“I missed you!” You said pulling away and looking up at him.
“Im sorry baby, we’re back now, for a while too.” he said taking your hand, “Take a walk with me?” he jerked his head opposite direction of your house.
You reluctantly looked back at your house.
“My daddy would get so mad at me..” You said frowning
His hand slid down your arm, capturing your hand.
“Yeah, so would mine,” he began to lead you away from the house.
It didn’t matter whether or not your daddy would be mad at you, cause Marlon made you forget about every single concern. You ain’t never laughed this much in the middle of the night.
While you two were walking, you hugged one of his arms.
“I be missing you so much while you and your brothers are away.” You pulled away. “How long are you guys in town?”
“About a month or so, then we headed to the Philippines.”
“Don’t worry about it, you won't have to worry about it much longer.” His tone was somewhat ominous.
“Short trip?” You questioned.
“Mmm not quite.” He murmured, his eyes locking onto yours.

Eventually you two made your way to Hayvenhurst, sitting by the illuminated pool. The crickets were echoing in the quiet L.A air.
“Your daddy would kill us both dead if he caught us sitting here right now.” You started, “I wish he liked me.” You said looking down at the ground.
“He don’t like nothin’” Marlon replied immediately, kicking his feet in the water.
“I’m serious! He really doesn’t like me!” You plead your case, “Last time I went to one of your performances, I could tell he was not pleased to see me there.”
“Well good thing I don’t care what Joseph thinks.” He said turning his head towards you, “You’re my lady, not his.”
You scooted closer to him, resting your head on his shoulder.
“I love you.” You sighed, melting into his side.
“I love you too, baby,” He said wrapping one of his arms around you, his other hand stayed planted behind him, supporting you both.
A silence fell between you two, the only sounds being the soft splashes of water and the constant chirping from the crickets. Nothing has ever felt better than sitting here peacefully with the love of your life.
“I’m sure it’s already hit 12, and I know you guys don’t celebrate birthdays, but I hope you have an amazing day today.” You said breaking the silence.
He looked down at you with a soft smile.
“I will have a good day today, baby.”
He shifted causing you to sit up in response.
“I have something for you.” he reached down in his dress pants pockets. He pulled out a small velvet box.
You looked at the box, then him..then back at the box again. Your chest tightened, the thumping of your heartbeat beating your eardrums.
“Y/N, I think we should get married,” he looked at the box, running a finger over the velvet surface.
You brought both your hands up to your mouth, you could feel the tears burning your eyes.
“Marlon…” you muttered in disbelief.
He placed the box down taking your hands in his.
“I’m so in love with you baby, I need you in my life forever..and always. When I’m not working, you’re all I think about. The love of my life.”
Light from the pool illuminated onto both you, setting such a beautiful atmosphere. Tears began to run down your cheeks. You were at a loss for words. It felt sudden, but it felt right. Maybe it was time, your high school sweetheart.
You stared into his eyes for a while before pulling him into a kiss.
You opened your mouth in attempt to reply, but no words came out.
“I’ll wait for you to graduate…and then we can run away and elope, away from here, away from Joseph.” He picked up the box and opened it to reveal a beautiful engagement ring.
You slowly nodded your head before you sped up, a happy sob quietly escaping your lips.
“Yes, I’ll marry you…” Your voice broke.
He pulled you into a kiss wiping away the tears from your pretty face. It was slow and passionate, you both melted into the kiss, the only thing that mattered in this very moment were you two.
He pulled away taking your left hand, sliding the ring onto your ring finger. The metal was cool against your finger. The diamond sparkling in the ambient lighting.
“It’s beautiful Marlon.” You said holding up your hand.
“You’re beautiful.” He said with the most humongous smile.
Soon you and Marlon decided it was time to get you back home. Reality began to hit you when your house started coming into view. You had left here a couple hours ago dating, and now you’re returning engaged.
“Marlon you’re so silly, I can’t believe we’re doing this,” Your voice echoed through the silent neighborhood.
“Gotta be crazy for the cause, mama!” He reasoned.
You both broke out in laughter, your laughs traveling miles away.
“But seriously, I don’t want you to be discouraged by Joseph.” Marlon’s tone suddenly changed. “He’s not gonna like it, but he didn’t like it when Tito and 'Maine did it either; he’s just like that.”
You smiled at him and looked away,
“I know…” you replied, you sounded as if you were trying to reassure yourself rather than him.
“I mean it, I’m gonna marry my lady.”
He took your hand in his squeezing it lightly.
“You free tomorrow?” He asked.
You sighed, reality rushing back to your senses.
“No.” You sighed, “I have to finish my work because my dad is taking us on his work trip.” you whined.
“Chicago.” You said pouting.
“Oh…well then I want you to enjoy yourself, show off that pretty face.” Marlon turned his head to look at you.
“But I’ll miss you,” you said, forming a small frown.
“It’s alright, 'cause like I said, we won’t have to worry about this much longer.” He pulled you closer, wrapping his arm around your neck.
The two of you finished your walk; now you're back standing in front of your glass door. Marlon turns toward you before delivering his final goodbyes.
“I’ll come back to get you tomorrow night,” He whispered.
You smiled up at him, suddenly embracing him. He wrapped his arms around your waist, lightly squeezing you. You pulled your head away and kissed him one last time.
“I love you so much.” You whispered
You both pulled away and turned to slowly open the patio door.
You stepped inside quietly, giving Marlon one last look. You slowly closed it back, now a glass pane separating you both.
You waved goodbye as he turned away, disappearing into the night, making his way back to Hayvenhurst.
