The Rape Culture in Brazil

Today I learned that a 17 year old girl was raped by 30 men in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. They filmed her exposed body, laughed at what they had just did to her, mocked and took selfies besides her while she was unconscious and spread the video.

I only heard this because all females in the country are sharing their fear, anger, frustration, sadness and disgust in their Facebook pages. The big media vehicles are hardly saying anything and the international press did not breathe a word about this. I saw some of the comments men left in some pages and I wanted to throw up, their comments were from “she was probably with inappropriate clothing” to “women’s don’t give themselves respect” to “if she was at home this would not have happened” to “girls nowadays sleep with 2-3 guys at the same time, this is nothing”.

30 men, 30 fucking men and not even ONE thought that was wrong. Not even ONE had a moment of clarity. Not even ONE to stop this cruel and barbaric crime.

We fear men. Not because all are rapist, but because in 30 men not even one saves.

This is why we need feminism, this is why we woman need to unite. Only a female can know what you feel, the sort of aggression you suffer daily from men on the street, in your house and work place. We need to protect each other, because like I just said no men will do it for us.
