Under the Sea (flashback)

Jefferson  shook off the last of the dream, he could only vaguely remember.  Opening his eyes, he found … her.  Green eyes, red hair … and a … fin?  Jefferson struggled to move himself where he needed to be, even as he watched  the young woman.

“Thank you."  he whispered softly, even as he tried to fight the fog taking over his mind.  He fought it off even as he confesses, softly.  "I’m still drowning.  There’s nothing you can do about that.”

Even though he wasn’t coughing anymore Ariel was still concerned about him. He looked unshaved with tired spots under his eyes.

She’d only really ever met one human and that was Eric, who was a prince, so she didn’t really have much to compare this man to, but he made her a bit uneasy. Especially when he said he was still drowning. “What do you mean? Are you hurt? I can go get someone to help if-if you need it.” She said.

Jefferson laughed … and how could he not.  How could he explain, both his own story as well as the hat’s own plans?  He was drenched to the core on a beach with a mermaid, who according to everything he knew about them, seemed to suggest this was, on the whole, a bad idea.

“I needed a vacation."  Jefferson couldn’t resist the laugh.  He’d lost his wife and a vacation was his best offer.  "I lost someone … special to me.  A-And … here I am?”

Ariel noticed that this man really liked avoiding questions. ‘Maybe he’s a criminal and running’ she thought. It made sense. A sort of loopy look in his eyes, the scruff. But she dismissed any thought. She always tried to see the best in people. No matter how eerie they were. And he didn’t seem like a bad guy, just someone who had been through a lot. “I’m sorry you lost someone… I understand. But…do you know where this is? Do you know where you are right now?” She asked. Not that this wasn’t a good place but where he had landed in the ocean was only a few miles from mermaid territory, and landing there could have been horribly bad for him.

Jefferson couldn’t resist the almost hysterical laugh that erupted at the question.  He ran his fingers through his wet hair, even as he looked around the world trying to take stock of it.  It was then he laughed, because how could he not, when he was fairly certain his last words before spinning his hat happened to be the phrase “Surprise me."  This most definitely was a case of him eating his words … or almost drowning in them.

"I wish I could.  This is … as much a surprise to you as it was me …” Jefferson muttered, even as it occurred to him.  If he didn’t know how he landed in this world … how was he to get back?

Ariel jumped back at the hysterical laugh that erupted from the man. Is this what all humans were like? Random outbursts of laughing, and avoiding questions?

"Well... You're at the edge of the Enchanted Forest, Prince Eric's domain..." She said, stealing a glance over at the castle quickly. "Where are you... From?" She asked carefully, hoping to draw an answer out of him. She'd never had this much trouble talking to anyone. Then again, she was a princess so people always felt obligated to talk to her. This man didn't know anything about her, and that made her smile inwardly.

When was the last time you traveled between worlds? What was it for?

I've been asked a couple times to travel between world since I've arrived, but haven't. I'm afraid if I leave I won't be able to come back. So the last time I traveled was to come here, looking for Eric.

"Did you have a favorite place in the ocean?"

My favourite place to go was always this ship wreck that I found when I was younger. The weird thing about it was that usually the ships were destroyed and water damaged, but the ship I found was perfectly fine. It was bigger than usual ships and stark white with a lot of rooms. I went there whenever I could sneak away and stayed there reading, until I heard my father calling for me.

Do you watch any television? What shows?

I've gotten mostly into cooking shows. Eric had them on all the time and I just got really into them. Mostly chef race, and food star network.
