In 2016 an exciting mission was ended. The Rosetta spacecraft made its final manouver. A controlled hard-landing on the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67p). Before that Rosetta accompanied the Comet for more then 2 years. It researched valuable scientific data, brought a lander on to the comets surface and took a vast number of pictures. 2017 Esa released over 400000 images from Rosettas comet mission. Based on these material Motion Designer Christian Stangl and Composer Wolfgang Stangl worked together to create this shortfilm. The sequences are digitally enhanced real-footage from the probe.

The video tells my personal story across the Atlantic ocean in January 2013. The experience became the beginning of my interest for video making, and since then I started working on the sailing project: telling stories about the seas and the people who cross them. Hey, just in time for the winter Olympics! I made ice lady using Houdini and Modo. For this side project, I learned a couple more really great techniques from Manuel Merkle and Moritz Schwind at entagma.com while adding a little bit of my own flair to things. The simulation involves a custom solver that allows points to grow from a single seed. Shading the ice also involved quite a bit of volume-based booleans & shatters to replicate the crystalline structures normally found in ice.
