Chapter four: Welcome home Sean
“So… Seonghyeon” Martin blew out a breath
“Yeah?”
“Do you speak Korean, or are you one of those Korean kids who want to be white?” Martin cocked an eyebrow
He felt his entire body go rigid, a small voice in his head persisted Sean, Sean, Sean. Now, he knew more than ever-now was his time to put that voice to rest.
“Korean is my first language, and no-I don’t want to be white”
Martin whistled, switching the conversation to Korean.
“First language huh? Were you born there orrrrr?”
“I was born in Daejeon and lived there until I was five, then I moved to Buffalo with my mom and brother”
Martin clicked his tongue in amusement “No shot, Turtle here was born and raised in Seoul”
“Turtle?”
Keonho chimed in “That’s what we call Juhoon, I mean look at the dude- he is a turtle. Plus he’s got two at home”
Now that Keonho mentioned it, Seonghyeon had never seen anyone look so much like an animal until now. “Oh, what're the turtle's names?”
“Hm?” Juhoon glanced up from the sandwich he was eating “Oh” he raised his head, wiping crumbs from the corner of his mouth “Choco and the other one doesn’t have a name”
“Isn’t that so cool?? Like not naming your turtle is just so…punk.” Martin patted Juhoon on the back, getting a cold glare in return “Keep breaking those social norms Juhoonie”
“I just never bothered naming it” Juhoon muttered back
While the three of them were nattering, Keonho was constantly being approached by people their age. Guys would ask about sports season, girls would ask about homework-even though it was the first day and Keonho definitely wasn’t the guy to ask about school work.
When the rush hour of people crawling for Kenoho's attention was over, he turned around and sighed.
“I remember when it was like that for me during the grade 9-11 popularity period of “Let’s all go talk to Martin right now, at the same time " sucks balls dude”. Martin's words may have been comforting but his toothy grin said either wise.
“I find that hard to believe,” Seonghyeon scoffed at the two words “popularity” and “Martin” being used in the same sentence. So far, that guy seemed like a total geek.
“Nah, Tin’s like the most popular guy in our grade” the words came out of Juhoon between sips from his water bottle
“Seriuosly?” Seonghyeon was shocked, Martin? Popular? Well sure he had the looks and style for it but he just seemed like such a doofus.
“Yes sir ski, grade 12s are just a lot more chill you know” Martin gave a wink as the bell rang, ending lunch.
English class was easy enough, it was the one class he had without Keonho so there was some quiet. The teacher was nice-though he didn’t remember her name he knew he’d learn it eventually.
The period flew by and before he knew it, third period had ended which meant the class he was looking forward to most was next: gym.
The school's gymnasium was huge, easily twice the size as Seonghyeon's old school. Keonho waved him over to a group of guys he was standing with in the corner.
There were five others-one of them being Martin, each boy excluding the former introduced themselves as Woojin, Nathen, Andy, and Jongseob-but everyone just calls him “Seob”
“My name’s Seonghyeon, nice to meet you” Seonghyeon smiled at the group, feeling a sense of belonging.
Nathen spoke up first “You chill if I call you Sean?”
The front door clicked shut softly behind him, shoes came off before the trek to that room was made. His bag hit the floor with a loud thud, first the tie came off, then the blazer, then the shirt, then the pants.
“Welcome home Sean”.
He looked around the room, at a stranger's clothes in a closet that didn’t belong to him. The bed wasn’t his, the desk wasn’t either-someone lived here for a very clearly short period of time.
No trace stayed of whoever was here before, the place was not his and yet-something said

Chapter 1 𑣲 Chapter 2 𑣲 Chapter 3
Chapter three: Just like me
Very quickly did Eom Seongyeon learn that Ahn Keonho was perfect, in fact he learnt he was a charm in the first 5 minutes of shaking his hand.
The previously cold girl beside Seonghyeon seemed to spark back to life from whatever freezer she had been stuck in. Her voice was high and shrill
“Oh hi Keonho, I didn’t know we had this class together. Isn’t it just a perfect day out?”
“Yes Sierah, it’s very nice”
He definitely wasn’t interested in this exchange, still she went on.
“Right? Anyways, are you trying out for any sport teams this year?”
“Same as the past two years-swimming”
“Oh my goodness! How could I forget, you’re only the best captain ever. I was thinking of trying out for the swim team, what do you think?”
“Well Sierah, I’m not too sure how much you’d like it since it’s pretty person specific. Take my boy Seonghyeon here as an example” Keonho’s hand gestured to Seonghyeon with an open palm.
“he’s the perfect example of a swimmer both mentally and physically. All quiet and focussed on himself ya know? And from the looks of it you two are pretty opposite considering that cold turn away you gave him earlier.”
The girl gaped as she tried to form words “It’s not-I didn’t-that’s not- I was just joking you know?”
She was laughing awkwardly now, trying to save the situation. “It was just a harmless prank, right Songhun?”
her hand was now on Seonghyeon's shoulder, her eyes burning holes in his face.
“My name’s Seonghyeon”
After math, Keonho asked to look at Seonghyeon's schedule, practically jumping for joy when he saw they had three classes together. Walking into history class, Ahn insisted they sit beside each other in all the classes they have together-Seonghyeon didn’t mind.
Keonho was barely taller than Seonghyeon-by an inch or two, his hair was darker than Seonghyeon's, and his chin was more pointed. To someone who didn’t pay attention to any of that, they looked like siblings-twins even, so much so that people kept coming up to Keonho asking about his “younger brother”.
Seonghyeon learnt very quickly that Keonho didn’t shut up, he just nattered. Usually, he would have snapped and told the other person to zip it, but he didn’t mind Keonho's incessant conversation making.
For the most part, he wasn’t listening-rather nodding along and going “hmmmm” every once and a while until a word jabbed him in the cheek.
“Sorry, what did you say, I got distracted for a second”
“I asked what kind of music you listen to, keep it simple and tell me your favorite artist”
Music was everything to Seonghyeon, how could he pick just one favorite? There were so many inspiring artists out there, but there was one who never failed to make the best music.
“Brent Faiyaz”
Keonho’s smile faltered for only a fraction of a second before quickly picking himself up
“Brent Faiyaz, never heard of him” the dark-haired boy paused.
“Honestly I’m not the person to talk to about music, I don’t know why I brought it up. Is music like, a big thing for you?”
“Music is everything, got me through the car ride here so I gotta love it” Seonghyeon smiled, a real smile for the first time in what felt like centuries.
When he said music was everything to him, he wasn’t lying. Seonghyeon loved writing lyrics and singing, he just wasn’t very good at composing. No one in Seonghyeon's life will ever know this though, not because it’s embarrassing or weird-but because it was his.
Every lyric he wrote and song he sang was his and just his, no one had to listen to it other than him, he could pour every single raw emotion into music.
“Well I got a friend-Martin, he’s really into music. Why don’t you come sit with us at lunch?” Keonho’s voice snapped Seonghyeon back to reality.
“Uh yeah, that sounds good-thanks”
“By the way, what did you mean by “It got me through the car ride here” like, car ride to school?”
Seonghyeon had figured Keonho was more about his looks than his brain, but by god could he not make an educated assumption.
“Oh-no, I moved here from Buffalo, it was a day-long car ride but we took loads of breaks.”
“Like Buffalo, New York?”
Seonghyeon suppressed a sigh and settled for an even worse option
“No shit sherlock, I don’t think there’s another city named after a giant cow with horns”
“Bison”
“What”
“There’s a town in South Dakota called Bison, which is also a giant cow with horns”
Seonghyeon didn’t know what to say for a moment, maybe Keonho was smarter then he led on. That feeling didn’t last long for Seonghyeon though.
“Did I say Bison”
“No”
“So unless you know of any other places named Buffalo, safe to say I meant New York”
“There’s a Buffalo an hour away from here”
“You’re joking right?”
“No”
Keonho knew he won and the smile sitting on his face said everything he didn’t have to “ Take that Eom Seoghyeon, I just beat you at your own loser game” he could practically see his mouth forming words on their own. Seonghyeon rubbed his temples sighing in resignation
“I mean Buffalo, New York”
“There’s a Buffalo in Minnesota too”
“Kiss my ass Keonho”
They laughed naturally, in unison.
The school's cafeteria was larger than he thought it would be, kids packed tables with lunch trays and lunchboxes packed with homemade food, Seonghyeon couldn’t afford either.
Keonho weaved through table after table after table until they neared the back corner, and suddenly Seonghyeon's world wasn’t as upside down as before. A familiar, comfortable language filled his brain like a mug being filled with warm coffee.
There were 2 boys already sitting at the table, laughing and talking with each other-in Korean. The two were elbow to elbow, practically on top of each other-it wouldn’t take a genius to see they were close friends. The way they spoke so effortlessly made the world around Seonghyeon stop.
In the two boys-he saw himself and James, he saw himself sitting beside his brother on the couch laughing at some stupid movie they decided to watch. He saw himself sitting in the small kitchen of James’ apartment, tongue sticking out while he tried to do his English homework-James right beside him helping. He saw the late night walks, the bike rides, the puzzles they used to do on weekends.
He pulled himself back to the current day so he wouldn’t start crying in the middle of the busy cafeteria-that would definitely suck.
The boy to the left was tall and lean with short, bleached hair, he was immaculately put together. He was adorned with rings and necklaces, one wired earbud in his ear, his uniform was styled to his liking, he was cool.
The boy to his right was slightly shorter-but still tall, his features contrasted the taller boys but were still striking. His hair was light brown, his facial features were soft-almost feminine. Instead of a blazer, he wore a purple zip up sweater, he wore far less jewelry then the blond-just a small silver chain around his neck and one or two rings.
“Hey” Keonho snapped his fingers in front of the boy faces “earth to knobheads”
The two boys looked up in unison as if they were connected by a string.
“Yo, wassup Keonho” the taller boy's grin widened, “He’s the sun, even brighter than Keonho” Seonghyeon thought.
The shorter boy just nodded at Keonho “So he’s either quiet, or doesn’t like Keonho” so far, he liked the smaller boy.
“Sooo, did you find a new addition to the cool kids club or is this one of your fanboys” the blond gestured to Seonghyeon with the same grin that hadn’t left his face or faltered once-just grown.
“This is Eom Seonghyeon, he’s my age. Just moved here from New York.”
“New York-shit man, that’s a pretty far hike from here” the smile was blinding at that point
“Says the dude from Canada” the comment from the purple sweater kid was barely audible but still sparked a reaction.
While the blond started yelling something about Ontario not being that far from the border and Ottawa being way cooler then this place anyways, Keonho and Seonghyeon slid onto the bench adjacent from the other two.
“Why don’t you two introduce yourselves instead of acting like total idiots” the two immediately snapped their heads towards Keonho
“He’s the only idiot here” despite the soft features on the boy to the right, he was incredibly intimidating. Seonghyeon assumed that was because of his quiet nature. A long sigh came from Keonho before pointing a finger at the boy to the right and looking at Seonghyeon.
“That’s Juhoon, he’s a year older than us. If you wanna play basketball with anyone, he’s the guy” Juhoon nodded at Seonghyeon, he nodded back
“Hey, I can play basketball too, you know!”
Keonho shifted his finger to the other boy
“And that is Martin, also a grade 12. He’s your music dude and trust me you don’t want to see him try and play basketball-it’s sad.
“Yep” Martin stretched his arms behind his head “they call me teenboi, you know”
“No one has ever called you that Martin”
“Shut up Keonho”
Seonghyeon thinks maybe, just maybe-he’ll like it here. Because he isn’t sitting alone, he’s sitting with three other boys exactly like him “Just like me” just like Eom Seonghyeon, he thought.
𝓘𝓷 𝔀𝓱𝓲𝓬𝓱 𑣲 Seonghyeon feels like he's lost himself in this new town. Everything is going to plan for him to have a horrible two years until a boy with a bright smile shakes his hand.

Chapter 2: Wrench in the plan
6:00AM, Seonhyeon's alarm blared-jolting him awake and out of bed. His whole body felt like jello and the memory of his tears hit him again, that’s right-today is supposed to be horrible, today will be horrible.
Walking to the washroom felt like walking in quick sand, Seonghyeon wasn’t sure if it was the lack of sleep from last night or the undesirable thoughts plaguing his mind-but when he looked in the mirror, he looked as miserable as someone who had just lost everything, which he had.
Forcing himself to rip his gaze away from the mirror, he went about his regular morning routine, that’s what his mom told him to do
“Act like it’s a normal day getting ready for school”.
Seonhyeon tried to, but it wasn’t a normal day at school because it wasn’t school, he wouldn’t walk in and see his friends, he wouldn’t laugh during class and go out for crappy food at lunch, he wouldn’t go to the basketball court after school with a smile plastered on his face like he usually would, and after that he wouldn’t wind up at James’ apartment just talking like he usually did on Wednesdays.
He shoved that thought down, if he didn’t-he’d start crying again, which he didn’t want. After brushing his teeth and finishing up his skincare he walked straight into the small kitchen lit by one sad, yellow light bulb that was threatening to go out at any second and got a bowl of cereal.
Standing at the counter alone in the dim space was both depressing and relieving, his mom probably left for her shift at the new hospital while he was just waking up-so no one was asking him how he felt. The truth is, Seonhyeon had no idea how he felt, it was a muddled mix of emotions that made his brain white static.
That white static persisted as he finished his cereal and washed his bowl and spoon like he always did so his mom wouldn’t have to do his dishes when she came home hurting and exhausted from her shift.
His room seemed to be kilometers away despite it only being a few feet, walking through that empty space he was meant to call “home” was like a knife in his stomach being twisted by some unseeable force.
He closed his door softly and sat on the edge of his bed with his head in his hands, the end of his palms rubbing small circles over his eyes in an attempt to wake up.
When he lifted his head all he saw was that uniform, that damn uniform and how it was staring right back at him through the translucent, shiny dry cleaning bag.
The clock read 6:52, he left for school at 7:30 so he could be there on time for 8:10. With this, Seongyheon crossed the room and picked up his uniform-gosh how he hated the fact it was his uniform.
He slowly unzipped the bag, removing each annoyingly prestigious piece and laying it on his bed, not his bed. With a sigh of resignation, he replaced his sleep shirt with the blinding white button down, his sleep shorts with the grossly perfectly tailored dress pants, pulled the uncomfortably heavy blazer over his shoulders, and did up the overly patriotic tie that tried to play itself down with more muted American colours.
Seonhyeon looked nothing like himself when he looked in the mirror no matter how much he styled his hair-his face was too tight, eyes too sunken, lips too pressed. He hated it, this was a shell of the boy in Buffalo, perhaps he left himself there for James-Seonhyeon thought.
“It’s a good experience”
he repeated his moms’ and James’ words to himself with a hollow voice that surprised him by its lack of emotion. Seonhyeon didn’t feel like himself, he didn’t look like himself, and now he didn’t even sound like himself-is it possible for a place to change someone within a week?
7:20, he had to put his shoes on and get out the door, lacing up his black air forces was the only thing that made him him, but even with the shoes-he was no longer Seonhyeon, he was Sean.
The name echoed in his head as he grabbed his backpack and locked the apartment door behind him, Sean, Sean, Sean, it was what his grandmother called him, the same woman who would deny her own grandson was Korean-as if it was something bad.
The entire walk to school was just how he thought it’d go-how he planned it to go, walking through the new city which since last night he had learnt is Casper-was strange in every way. Buffalo and Casper couldn’t be more opposing in Seonghyeon's opinion, but he was looking at the world through sunglasses at this point in time, so the truth couldn’t be more conflicting.
Seonghyeon thought the streets were bare, they just weren’t packed, Seonghyeon thought all the trees looked dead, it was early September, Seonhyeon thought everything looked unmaintained and dirty, he was walking through an alley. At every turn, Seonhyeon had a new negative thought about the city-each thought could be dismantled if he was paying attention-if he cared.
30 minutes to school from the apartment, these past 15 were Seonhyeon distracting himself from the very thing that bothered him the most, Sean. Since his realization this morning-the memories of his grandmother's condescending and judgemental voice saying the name over and over is all he’s heard.
His head played it over and over again like some cruel joke no one in the situation benefits from, or ever will benefit from.
Seonhyeon is very proud to be Korean even if it’s only half-because he is Korean, he was born in Korea, his first language is Korean, his father is Korean, Seonhyeon is Korean. However, that boy in the mirror wasn’t Seonhyeon, that boy wasn’t Korean-because he had no reason to be Korean. In Buffalo, Seonhyeon had loads of friends, but his closest friends were Korean-they spoke it with each other, lived experiences together, they embraced their culture together, and that meant more than the moon and the stars to Seonhyeon.
No matter how much Seonhyeon tried to remember those times-those people, the sudden appearance of the new school's green, packed courtyard ripped away any good memories of Eom Seonghyeon, replaced with: Sean Sean Sean.
Walking through the courtyard was somehow easy, he glided past groups of kids laughing and talking without a pain to the heart or stab to the gut. He had his music to partially thank, but for the most part-he didn’t see himself and his friends in any of them.
The entry hall was big, filled with even more kids his age, younger, and older. Seonhyeon approached a table in the center of the room and snagged a map of the school before finding a vacant wall and checking his phone for classroom numbers.
Exactly like he planned-they were all so far away from each other, he may as well run half a marathon just getting from class to class. Seonhyeon decided now would be a good time to start walking to his first math class-mathematics, another reason this school was horrible in every way.
Math at 8:20 in the morning, Seonghyeon was great at math but only when he had half of the day to wake up-first thing in the morning is like taking someone out of a steaming hot bath and throwing them into a bay during the middle of winter right after.
The halls were slightly less packed, but still full, and the grade 9s standing in the middle and slow walkers backlogging the hall made it obnoxious to get to his class. Warning bell, great now Sean-Seonghyeon had 5 minutes to get upstairs and down the hall to where the map said his class is.
More grade 9s and slow walkers made those precious 5 minutes fly, final bell rang and Seonghyeon still had to get down the hallway to math-god why did it have to be math.
Finally after 3 more excruciating minutes, Seonghyeon finally made it-30 sets of eyes landed on him at once along with one slightly more intimidating pair than the rest. Looking over at the tall lean woman in front of him she said something, Seonghyeon still had his earbuds in,
“Huh?”
his voice came out flat as he removed them, only to hate the action after hearing a few snickers. The tall woman sucked in a breath.
“I asked for your name.” Her stare could have turned Seonghyeon to stone on the spot.
“Oh uhm sorry, Eom Seonghyeon,” he tried his best at a sheepish smile.
Exactly to plan, he was late and embarrassed himself
“Take the seat in the corner”
He looked, it was next to a girl-great. Making his way over, he slumped in the empty seat next to her before looking out the window-a brick wall greeted him. Not only had he been late, embarrassed himself, been sat beside a girl, but now he doesn’t even get a good view from his window seat.
The tall woman at the front introduced herself as Ms. Mulberry, she talked about her kids, her hobbies, her blah blah blah blah. Seonghyeon tuned out when she started talking about enjoying travel and other boring stuff, it wasn’t until the room got loud with kids chatting did Seonghyeon realize he missed something.
Turning to the girl beside him he asked as politely as he could
“Excuse me, what’re we supposed to be doing right now”
All she offered was a sideways glance at him before returning her attention back to her friends. The worst of last night's thoughts crashed on Seonghyeon, he was ignored and probably already hated-but that didn’t matter when he was ignored.
He turned back in his seat, putting his other earbud in and sighing, to Seonghyeon-being ignored was the same as being kicked repeatedly in the stomach.
He had just decided to sulk for the rest of the period before two taps on his shoulder pulled him from the idea.
Seonghyeon turned around expecting someone mean-or someone lonely like him, that must be it, he’s a loser now.
In front of him stood a boy who he wouldn’t describe mean or lonely at all, he bore a toothy grin, his blazer had been replaced with a cream and navy sweater, his hair curled slightly at the end, glasses resting lazily on the center of his nose, he was disgustingly handsome.
Seonghyeon removed one of his earbuds as the boy extended a hand towards him
“Hi”
The boy's voice was cheery and an active contrast to Seonghyeon's bland “Hi..?”
“I’m Ahn Keonho”
“Eom Seonghyeon”
“Nice to meet you Seonghyeon”
Both boys retracted their hands, Keonho’s smile was devastatingly blinding it almost distracted Seonghyeon from one thing: Ahn.
Very quickly, Sean was replaced with a new name to bounce around Seonghyeon’s head-Ahn Ahn Ahn. Seonghyeon knew very well why it bounced around his mind like it did, he had a cousin named Ahn-it was Korean.
It wouldn’t take a genius to see that the boy was Asian, but he was Korean just like Seonghyeon. This wasn’t supposed to happen, Seonghyeon never added meeting someone like him to the plan-but here Ahn Keonho was staring straight at him.
Seonghyeon was supposed to be alone and miserable, so why was the boy's smile spreading to his own face like a disease? Why was he happy someone threw a wrench in his grand plan for his mom to let him move back to Buffalo?
𝒜𝓃 𑣲 Fun fact! Seonghyeon's math teacher is inspired by my grade 9 math teacher. She was very nice to me but omg did she run that class like a boot camp.

Chapter 1 𑣲 Chapter 2 𑣲 Chapter 3
Chapter one: It's all wrong
Moving across the country didn’t seem like it’d be easy, especially not to Seonhyeon, New York all the way to Wyoming. Since he was 5 he had lived in Buffalo, everything and everybody he knew from the states were there and strictly there. He had no family in other states, no friends, not even a favorite restaurant outside of New York.
Sitting in the small room of this new apartment his mom got for cheap, he felt moving back to Korea would be easier than this.
“Seonghyeon! Come out I have something for you,”
His mom’s voice drifted under his door, standing up-his dark hair fell into his eyes and his legs felt stiff from sitting on the floor for so long. Stepping out into the living room, he saw his mom standing with a clear dry cleaning bag in her hand
“I picked up your new uniform today, what do you think?” Her voice was light, keeping the soft smile on her face and crinkle around her eyes company.
The uniform was a white button down collar shirt with a dark blue blazer, matching dress pants, and a blue, red, and white slanted line design tie,
“It’s okay” Seonhyeon replied-voice and face neutral.
At his old school in Buffalo, there were no uniforms-another piece of Seonhyeon feels to be left in that city: his personal fashion sense.
His mum walked over, handing him the bag and placing a soft kiss on his forehead
“I think you’ll look very handsome in it.” Her smile grew a little more as she ruffled his hair “Make sure you have everything you need unpacked for tomorrow, okay?”
“Got it” Seonhyeon offered a small smile so as to not make his mum feel bad.
That night laying in his new bed felt like torture, the matress was too hard, but it was softer then his old bed, there was too much noise outside, but not as much noise as Buffalo, the room was too warm, but colder than his old room.
Everything about this new state, new city, new room, new bed was wrong-he already felt like he didn’t fit and he had barely even stepped foot outside.
Tomorrow, Seonhyeon would walk to school and when he got to the courtyard-kids would be walking with their friends buzzing about what they did over the summer, what classes they have together, how much they missed each other, everyone would already know what rooms their classes were in, who their teachers were. Seongyeon wouldn’t have anyone to walk with and natter about their summers, he’d have to walk around the school with a map and probably end up late to class, embarrassing himself, and when he finally walked into those classes-he wouldn’t know a single person and either sit alone, or beside someone awkwardly and embarrass himself even more by trying to make small talk.
Seongyeon has already made up his mind that this new school sucks, he’s already decided he doesn’t fit in, that his uniform will look horrible and everyone will hate him or worse, ignore him.
When his mom told him they were moving he begged to stay in Buffalo with his older brother James, he was practically crying on his knees pleading with her. In the end, they both said no, said that this is a good experience and that in two years when he’s finished high school-he can move back if he wanted to.
That’s Seongyeon’s plan, pass grade 11 and 12, graduate, move back to Buffalo and go to Buffalo State University for robotics.
Seonhyeon doesn’t remember Korea very much since he moved at such a young age, but in his mind-it seemed way better than whatever city in Wyoming he moved to, he doesn’t even remember the name.
In his mind, his dad and sister still live in the same house as him, his sister. That’s all he can really think about now, his little sister who was 2 when he, his mum, and James packed up and moved. She’s 13 now, when she was just a baby-she’d call him “여우” which means “fox” while pulling at his dark hair. Now she just calls him Eom, he misses the days when she was little and they felt like actual siblings rather than two completely different people who share DNA.
Before he even realized, small tears were falling on his pillow, streaking his face and quiet sobs coming from his mouth. Oh how he misses his family: James, his dad, his sister, his friends back in Buffalo, even the strangers he passed on the street. Now he’s stranded on a small island all alone in the vast sea, “It’s all wrong” he thought, it’s all wrong.
