04.14.17 // my lab bench, on a good day. here i’m doing a protein quantification assay using a commercialized Bradford assay. the link provides an in-depth description of how the assay works, but basically the presence of protein changes the bradford dye from red to blue (so more blue = more protein), and a spectrophotometer can read the absorbance and spit out a number. you can then take that number and match it to your standard curve, which is a bunch of serial dilutions of a known amount of protein (we use BSA), to find your protein concentration. now i can use this protein in a western blot (where i have to add the same concentration of protein per sample).
