No mans sky is breathtaking, it really is, when I see a waypoint that's 18 days travelling away and its on the same planet as you it really puts the size of the game into perspective, however this isn't the first game to do procedurally generated maps (it is on this scale) but mine craft and many top down dungeon shooters did it years ago. The problem with NMS is the fact that apart from the sheer amazing size it is so painfully average at everything. It prides itself on being a 'space survival sim' but to call it that is an insult to the survival series in general. Let's take dayZ and minecraft as an example, dayZ is amazing at what it does as you scavenge and craft for supplies to survive and excel in a world full of zombies and opponents trying to kill you, you feel a though you have to get better to play the game. Minecraft is essentially the same but you scavenge so you can build and design huge cities and homesteads, NMS has none of this, you mine and sell to get money to buy better mining equipment and ships with better storage so you can mine and sell to get better mining equipment and....you get the picture, all you're doing is upgrading to get better at upgrading, there is no final goal, no real story, no PVP and no survival. The combat is awful and shoddy, the AI is reminiscent of alien colonial marines and the controls are heavy and clunky and the FOV is like looking through a kitchen roll tube. Space pirates are annoying as space combat is just painful, when you finally defeat said pirates all you get is a better standing with whatever aliens (lack of them) run the Galaxy, there is no bounty contracts, no rewards and no incentive, The same goes for being a pirate, you attack big containers for whatever booty may be in there (you can't find out until after you attack it) then you're met with endless waves of ships attacking you until you find a break in the patterns and escape, pointless, boring and painful. I love the size, I love the idea, I hate the execution. The game has no replayability, no story and no real reason to play other than to waste a bit of time, there's no PVP, no busy settlements or towns, you only ever see one alien at a time and everything looks the same. An indie game with a BIG price tag, wait until you see it in a bargain bin 4/10.
