Flip!
A rather disturbing scene, but visually stunning. Invertable crinoline, Crime and Punishment, that I constructed at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. Cloth roses made by the costuming department, prototype by Studio 703. Wondering if I could steal the skirt for the next burlesque party at Nalen.
As promised, a few workshop pictures from the making of the lamps and the ceiling done for the set of The Lower Depths at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. As you can see, I sculpted as close a copy as I was able to of the ceiling ornaments of the actual theatre, and this clay original was then replicated four times in the big ol’ vacuum press of the theatre. (Would that I could have a toy like that at home… although I’m pretty sure my housing association wouldn’t appreciate the electrical bill. Honestly, theatre workshops are some of my favourite places in the world.)
And of course there was the cutting, fitting, secure attaching, painting, patina, unplanned covid shutdowns mid-sculpting… you know, all the usual stuff. 2022, what’re you gonna do.
... Okay, this time let’s post it to the right blog!
I had the pleasure to join in the making of this amazing bit of set decor, for a production of Gorky’s The Lower Depths at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. There were many people involved in the design, construction, decoration and painting of this set, which replicates a decaying version of the interior of the theatre salon, and I always find it very cool to be able to join such a large production. My main contribution was to the ceiling dome and the large lamp ornaments on it, and also in pitching in with the decor painting. For those who enjoy seeing some in progress pictures (I always do!), I will add a few shortly in another post. I got to work with a vacuum press for the first time in quite a while -- fun times! Here’s an interesting article about the decor of the production. The article is in Swedish, but the pictures aren’t.
Some day we may have parties and grandiose events again. Here's a throwback to the pre-Plague times, when some of the best burlesque parties were being hosted here in Stockholm.
These photos of my partner and myself was taken in the official photo booth of the party by photographer Evy Wurm. The theme of the party was "Dark Valentine", so horns and goat skulls was the obvious choice of attire.
Skull headdress and my partner's horns were both made from papier maché, one of my favourite underappreciated materials. Sturdy, lightweight, inexpensive, non-toxic -- what's not to like about it?
Just a little sneak peek at something that, at this point in time, is put on hold because of illness. I hope that I will eventually be able to show the actual thing -- I thought it was a pretty darn cool idea, and a lot of work went into it. I'd call it the curse of 2021, but I'd rather not give 2022 any ideas when it's just getting started.
Once upon a time, before I knew what went on behind the scenes of theatres and studios, I seriously entertained the idea of becoming a librarian. Working around books, my younger self thought, must be among the best ways a person can earn their living.
Well, as Mira Grant wrote in Chimera:
“We walk on the graves of our unborn selves. The futures we never got to live. And some of those people wouldn't get along very well with the ones we actually decided to be.“
If you, like perhaps a past version of myself, believe that all books, no matter how worn, outdated or unwanted, nevertheless is an object to be venerated and will still be valued and loved if it just ends up in the right hands, well... Let’s pretend the way to make a portable theatre library is to make hundreds or thousands of really detailed, lightweight prop books, and that the wholesale slaughter of actual condemned books doesn’t enter into the equation. You’ll be happier that way.
Some decor work for Röde Orm at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm.
Another set of pictures from another production from the Marionette Theatre, in collaboration with Claire Parsons Co. The play is called Gräs, and I don’t think I have to translate this title for you foreigners.
Puppets and huge disembodied feet were created by a pair of skillful puppeteers, while the workshop ensemble at the City Theatre (that was, at the time, me and my colleagues) got to work on making numerous other props, scenography elements and curious devices. Later on, I was also called upon to help re-create a few of the stage elements so that they would be portable enough to go on tour, as the show was being played far and wide in Europe. Well deserved, if you ask me.
Oh, hi there. Long time, no see.
Free piece of advice? If you ever found yourself thinking about going into theatre props production during a world-wide pandemic? Try something a bit less painful. Like being a test subject for dangerous and highly experimental medical procedures.
Well, I’m still here, strange year/s that it has been. I haven’t been all the way out of work either, although between cancellations, crew member illnesses and plays that went up for like a week and then had to be shut down due to restrictions, I’d be lying through my teeth if I didn’t admit it has been far tougher than I’d like to discuss.
So let’s look to the past for some brightness and whimsy, shall we. This production, called Da-da-da and starring the extremely talented people from the Marionette Theatre at the Stockholm City Theatre, went up a few years ago to much acclaim. It was a production with a very young audience in mind (think toddlers), and the visual and lighting design was a feast for their little eyes. My contribution to these scenes is the oversized toy train, which is built around a much smaller model train with more realistic proportions. That way, it could still go around the rails like a regular model train would. The challenges with this build was making it in such lightweight materials that it could still keep its balance in the curves, and creating compartments in which to hide some very light-weight props, as well as a soap bubble machine.
It’s closing in on eight years since Madame Decima was getting ready to leave the sketchbook and enter the world. In June, eight years since she had her first public outing at Skellefteå Museum. I never posted much of her online, for daft reasons like not being satisfied with my pictures or videos of her, but... I was also very proud of her, once. Sorry I had to leave you behind, love.
I still miss her sometimes. I wish you could have seen her move.
Sensitive schmensitive
When you notice that Tumblr has seen fit to protect users from sensitive content such as, er, theatrical turtle costumes, hand-made books and jewelry, or painted styrofoam letters from a children’s TV show. Look, I can understand marking, say, the fake half-skinned marten -- it was pretty realistic (if I may say so myself) -- or the gag boobs, cartoonish as they are and prudish as it may be. But this algorithm is clearly out of control if it is seeing cunts in random swirls of wood.

Ahem. I am very glad that this has been shared and enjoyed by so many. I am not quite as glad that whoever first posted it thought it was a great idea to remove all credit and links to sources. So here! Now with a link to my pages with write-up and info about the thing! If only those people reblogging with comments like “I want this!” had access to that -- but we wouldn’t want to help our readers or the creators of our original content out, would we.
Hope y'all had a good Halloween. #armadilloartifacts
