Fic: The Change Curve Ch1 - Denial (Charity/Vanessa)
Summary: Kubler-Ross’ 5 Stages of Grief, but in a STORY!
Author’s Note: Nobody dies, but there may be some utterly gratuitous scenes of talking about feelings. Also flashbacks to The Early Days ™ because I heart a bit of nostalgia and, at my age, it’s pretty much all I’ve got. So. Enjoy!

Chapter 1: Denial
FEBRUARY 2020
Charity looks at herself in the bedroom mirror, fingertips pausing as they sweep beneath her eyes. They’ve both gone through the routine tonight, as usual. They passed one another on their way to and from the bathroom, twisting in a familiar dance where their bodies almost touch but don’t. Vanessa rubbed moisturiser up and down her arms in the assiduous, capable manner that dictates most of her movements, then slid under the duvet first, as usual.
And, as usual, Charity lingered by the mirror, checking her skin for blemishes that don’t exist and wrinkles that have been there for a while. Everything was the same as usual. Is the same, Charity reminds herself, because it isn’t happening. This isn’t happening.
She meets her own gaze in the mirror, blinking at the shadows in green. Wondering if they show on the rest of her face - if they have shown since Vanessa sat her down and said words Charity still can’t fully hear. It isn’t happening, she tells herself again, and adjusts her features so the shadows are chased away. Her smile is fake and the brightness in her eyes is manufactured but, for a second, Charity indulges herself in the idea of normalcy. She nods at herself with wry confidence, as usual, then turns and marches towards the bed.
Vanessa winces when Charity lifts the covers, and it’s hard not to notice how pale and drawn she is. Her hand flutters protectively over her belly; she even flinches as Charity bumps and hitches across the bed. This isn’t usual, Charity thinks grimly, and tries to ignore how Vanessa’s breath is shaky when she lets it out, how she ever-so-carefully curls into Charity’s body with a delicacy that never bothered them before.

You can’t say for certain that she’s not going to die. Because you don’t know. No one does.
