Parlor, Butterscotch Root Beer

Parlor Beverages out of Wilkes-Barre, PA seems to specialize in the deep flavored postfixed "-beers" of the soda family, having a regular Root Beer, a true to the North East US Birch Beer, a seasonal Pumpkin Root Beer, and today's flavor Butterscotch Root Beer. The butterscotch flavor is deep and rich and plays interestingly with what I would guess is a more traditional wintergreen's bitterness. The drink has a simple sweet butteryness, and as such, I think it pairs very nicely with freshly popped popcorn. If you like sweeter Root Beers I would recommend this one to you, and I intend to try Parlor's regular Root Beer to see if it's more in the herbal tradition. Will report back on that when I can. Another interesting note is you will need a way to open the bottle cap, as it is a regular pop top, and not a screw top. Probably means the soda was bottled at a facility that processes beer, and it was perhaps cheaper, or impossible to have a screw top bottle. Today's topic is the lovely and smooth 1919 Root Beer from Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. It's a smooth drink, and while some Root Beer's stronger flavors might come to overwhelm the pallet 1919 has a sweet, & smooth body that pairs well with savory foods for all 16ozs. The real vanilla is a very nice touch, adding in a mellow additional flavor. If I had one complaint, they sell as a 12 pack, and a 12 pack of 16oz cans has proved unweildy. Sprecher is a great brand of soda produced in Wisconsin USA, using an adapted traditional German beer making method, where they fire brew the syrup for the soda. Sprecher's Root Beer is their flagship product, and despite starting of as a German style beer company, they now make 90% of their revenue from their root beer. Most of their sodas are actually sweetened with honey, and come in a nice robust 16oz (~0.5 liter) portion.

The soda pictured above is a special variety of their lovely Root Beer, having been made with a sweetener of Maple Syrup, and has a distinct flavor profile from their honey sweetened main stay. The Maple flavor is notable, and the flavor seems to softly stay on the tongue, let you enjoy it's taste of Autumnal joy.

I might recommend pairing this with a lighter flavored snack, like hard or soft pretzels, or a sliced up apple to enjoy the spiced maple flavor with the sweet fruit.

As a note, on the nature of this blog, I happen to enjoy soda a fair amount, and it's been my mainstay beverage to relax with since I never took up alcohol. I have been wanting to keep better notes on flavors I have tried, since I feel I have forgotten many good, and many bad, pop flavors, so this is to help me remember.
